Do you remember that kid from Lord of the Flies? Why do I even remember that kid, I’m too young for that. However, his name was Piggy, and I wanted to make a typeface that resembled him. So this is my tribute to Piggy who got killed by that falling plastic rock in the movie. May he live forever through this typeface, on birthday cards, or maybe some sweet candy packaging or why not through an graphic identity for a toy company?

Lewis F. Day, in his book Alphabets Old and New, offered this typeface as an example from sixteenth-century England of lettering incised in wood. The font is essentially monocase, but there several lowercase letters are alternate letterforms. Please note that, due to the ornate nature of the letterforms, this font does not contain math operators, fractions or superior numbers. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Momotarō is a Japanese legend about a boy who came to earth inside a giant peach. He was found by a childless woman and grew up to be a hero. I'm in a Japanese mood - mainly because lately I have been working with brushes and ink a lot. Momotaro font is a very detailed brush font. It doesn't come with a hero inside a giant peach, but it does give your design work that extra oomph, ahh and wow.

In a much needed break from complex scripts and polished packaging fonts, Koziupa and Paul decide to show their playful side. Chicle is bold, stretchable, kid-proof, pet-resistant letters. This font is made to take the abuse of software used to put together the elaborate, attention-scrambling artwork of candy, cereal, and toy packaging, or whatever boxed obscenity contains cat and dog treats. Chicle is Spanish for bubble gum. It's a definite sugar fix — no substitutes.

Fido Pro is the official font of dog owners everywhere. Woof! When the original Fido font was published in 2009, it became an instant hit with cartoon channels, comic book artists, toy makers, cereal packagers and game developers. Now, more than a decade later, we decided to pick it up and give it the Pro treatment. It doesn’t take long to see that Cheap Skit is a super legible, easy going font. It is intended to be used where text needs to be clear and legible, but have certain amount of handmade energy. I’d say that products that has something to do with children (toys, clothes, games, posters …) or something organic, recipes, bookcovers …

I was doing the laundry the other day and, as usual, I was going through the pockets of my jeans. After I had emptied my party pockets, I figured it was a great name for a new font! So, without further ado: here’s Party Pocket: a handwritten all caps font - great for product packaging, greeting cards and posters!

Father's Day, or June 17 of this year, is in the middle of Argentinian winter. And like people do on wintery Sunday mornings, I was bundled up in bed with too many covers, pillows and comforters. Feeling good and not thinking about anything in particular, Father's Day was nowhere in the vicinity of my mind. My eleven year old son, Matías, came into the room with a handmade present for me. Up to this point, my Father's Day gift history was nothing unusual. Books, socks, hand-painted wooden spoons, the kind of thing any father would expect from his pre-teen son. So you can understand when I say I was bracing myself to fake excitement at my son's present. But this Father's Day was special. I didn't have to fake excitement. I was in fact excited beyond my own belief. Matí's handmade present was a complete alphabet drawn on an A4 paper. Grungy, childish, and sweeter than a ton of honey. He'd spent days making it, three-dimensioning the letters, wiggle-shadowing them. Incredible. A common annoyance for graphic designers is explaining to people, even those close to them, what they do for a living. You have to somehow make it understandable that you are a visual communicator, not an artist. Part of the problem is the fact that "graphic designer" and "visual communicator" are just not in the dictionary of standard professions out there. If you're a plumber, you can wrap all the duties of your job with 3.5 words: I'm a plumber. If you're a graphic designer, no wrapper, 3.5 or 300 words, will ever cover it. I've spent many hours throughout the years explaining to my own family and friends what I do for a living, but most of them still come back and ask what it is exactly that I do for dough. When you're a type designer, that problem magnifies itself considerably. When someone asks you what you do for a living, you start looking for the nearest exit, but none of the ones you can find is any good. All the one-line descriptions are vague, and every single one of them queues a long, one-sided conversation that usually ends with someone getting too drunk listening, or too tired of talking. Now imagine being a type designer, with a curious eleven year old son. The kid is curious as to why daddy keeps writing huge letters on the computer screen. Let's go play some ball, dad. As soon as I finish working, son. He looks over my shoulder and sees a big twirly H on the screen. To him it looks like a game, like I'm not working. And I have to explain it to him again. This Father's Day, my son gave me the one present that tells me he finally understands what I do for a living. Perhaps he is even comfortable with it, or curious enough about that he wants to try it out himself. Either way, it was the happiest Father's Day I've ever had, and I'm prouder of my son than of everything else I've done in my life. This is Matí's font. I hope you find it useful.

Sharik Sans (named after the brave and smart dog-hero from my favorite TV series) has a warm and gentle personality. It does not shout; it does not stand out. Sharik serves his master in everyday work. Although it is a sans serif, you can feel a calligrapher’s touch in its subtle details and endings. They shine out, especially at display sizes. The family consists of nine weights plus matching italics. It meets most of the needs designers deal with on a daily basis, including web usage. It is stuffed up with various OpenType features such as small capitals, a wide set of numerals, fractions, ordinals, alternates, and, of course, ligatures. And it perfectly harmonises with my other serif-like typeface family Clavo. NB: This font is NOT style linked by weight!

You are looking at the friendliest, happiest and most faithful of puppies. It comes to greet you as soon as your eyes see it, radiates its joy, wags its tail, jumps in circles, and begs to be played with. Showboat is a very unique bragger of a font. Its bouncy metrics and whimsical shapes are a sure formula for attention. People will soak it in and feel happy while they do. How can anyone greet such happy letters with anything other than a smile? No matter how many fonts your design box has, you can be sure that none of them is this radiant, lively or cute. This happy camper comes in four fonts: two weights and a large number of corresponding ligatures and alternates. The inspiration source for MFC Phonograph Monogram is a vintage monogram specimen named “Kent” showing only a CBA sample. It was a style I could find no other reference for, but was desperate to recreate this record like styling of monogram. Finally, it all comes to life in MFC Phonograph Monogram. I even threw in a little dog and phonograph icons hidden in the font as decorative icons reminicent of old Victrola records. Phonograph Monogram supports two and three letter monograms, although the two letter style break from the circular record design and creates a zulu style shield design. MFC Phonograph Monogram uses the Ligatures feature, available in most OpenType savvy applications, such as Adobe Illustrator CS (see Fig. 1). The Ligatures feature is typically enabled automatically, but you may need to confirm this in your program if you are not certain. If any second lowercase letter typed does not automatically switch to form the right side of the rounded form, you do not have Ligatures enabled.

Life’s always more fun when you reverse the stress. The same goes for the new member of the Cabrito family. Cabrito itself is a recently developed slab serif made for the kid’s book The Clothes Letters Wear. Cabrito proved to be more popular than I thought, and I promised I would create an inverted style for this new addition to the font world--a variant that would pair well with the original or even stand well on its own. And so now, here it is. Cabrito Inverto, which features the reversed stress of the strokes from a font’s “normal” traits. Inverted stress fonts are most often associated with cowboys and the Old West. The inverted stress gives it a happy-go-lucky appearance, not to be taken too seriously. It’s a pleasantly rounded, not-so-strictly geometric typeface with handwriting-inspired forms. Whew, that’s a mouthful! Inverto’s bundle of alternates is accessible in any OpenType-enabled program. It contains a workforce of alternates, swashes, and alternate titling caps to embellish the font. Also bundled are swash alternates, aged design and style figures, and compact caps. Smack, from American designer Jill Bell, is oriented toward a young generation who does not want to mind the rules. The font invites unconventional and playful use. The figures seem to be almost coincidentally shaped. Letters alternate between thin and thick strokes alternate and are accompanied by fine dots which almost look like accidental drops of ink on the paper. Smack is an illustrative font with unmistakable handwriting character and is perfect for cartoons, comics and anything else which is not supposed to take life too seriously.

I’m not particularly fond of beans. I do eat them, but they’re not my idea of a delicacy… But this font has ‘fairy tale’ feeling to it, and I liked the name Beanstalker. Beanstalker is a hand made font (I used a fineliner to draw the glyphs). It is quite neat and organized, but does come with some rough edges and a bit of texture.

Boshi is inspired by classic video games, but it can do more than that. Saturday morning cartoons, comic books and other logos that need to express fun are other ways this font can be used. It also includes several Tiki-style interlocking ligatures. Vastly improved over the original free version, already featured in several high-profile mobile games and even a toy, Boshi evokes retro goodness.

Searching for the Exceptional Designing Tapir was driven by the search for a display typeface which is doing something different than the rounded and bouncy fun faces – the letterforms should stand out with a slight touch of weirdness, creating attention and recognizabilty. A big character set, optimized spacing & kerning and lots of features make Tapir a good choice for professional usage between games, toys and skateboards.

Minou is a French cat’s name. There are more: you could name your cat Léo, Fripouille, Orion, Orphée or Tigrou, but I kind of like Minou. Minou font is a very cute, handmade affair, that started from some doodles I had drawn. Use it for children’s book covers, pyjama party posters, toy packaging and inspirational quotes. I am sure it’ll do the job purrfectly!

Addressotype is based on lettering from a vintage ad for the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation, manufacturers of the Addressograph addressing machine. In days when the U.S. postal service delivered everything, mailing addresses were as important as email addresses are today. The Addressograph machines stamped out dog-tag-like plates that were used to print mailing labels at high volume. Embodying the company’s work ethic and durability, Addressotype recalls the gaspipe form of lettering popular in the 30s and 40s, updated to reflect the “streamlining” trend popular during the period.

My wife was watching a baking show in which a Scottish guy attempted to cook a clootie. A what?? A clootie??? Never heard of a clootie! Apparently it is a suet dumpling, containing dried fruits (like raisins) and boiled in a piece of cloth (clootie means ‘rag’ or ‘strip of cloth’ in Scottish). Clootie font is a handmade bundle of happiness. It is rounded, soft and legible and will look particularly good on book covers. And I promise you all: one day I will cook clooties to find out what they taste like!

Versatile egg-shaped Huevo, like all Burghal Design fonts, includes upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers, symbols, punctuation, and accented foreign characters. Huevo is the head of the household known as Los Huevos. Tequila-guzzling, cerveza-swilling Huevo Loco is the boldest of Los Huevos and includes cocktail glass, olive, and eight ball dingbats. Huevo Loco can drink any other font under the table. Like most red-blooded American fonts, the favorite pastimes of Huevo Gordo are eating and couch warming, and boy, does it show!

A rubber stamp printing set from the 1930s (or possibly earlier) was the model for Winery JNL. Containing a pleasant serif font, it also provided a few little touches unusual for such toy sets of the time. The horizontal crossbar of the H has a diamond embellishment, as does the horizontal stroke of the number 3. Additionally, the lower right tail of the G curves away from the letter and the Q has a spiral tail. Re-drawn from scans of the original stamp impressions, this typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions.

My friends didn't use capitals when sending me text messages, e-mails and using all their digital toys. At the beginning, I was feeling ignored. But after time I thought, that... I can do something for them. And so, I've made Redaktor. Redaktor is a cute monospaced family of four fonts, which has only lowercase characters and large x-height. If you want to write an uppercase character, you can't do it. (OK, to be fair, there will be small underline, just to show you, what you have done...) You may find Redaktor useful for posters, titling, info-graphics or websites.

Sometimes the simplest ideas yield more than one result. The basic “dot matrix” design of aligned circles that was the basis for Transactive JNL also yielded Zera JNL (connected rings) and Pillow Puff JNL (fluffy and cloud-like lettering). One more design was originally cast aside. A separate file is available for filling in the letters with a colored background, however minute adjustments may be needed due to the fact that each drawing or design software program has its own characteristics and quirks.
