SCR fonts are screen optimized (also called 'pixel fonts'). Unlike standard fonts (and like the few well-hinted fonts like Verdana or Arial), they give a crisp look on screen at very small sizes, thus increasing legibility. The perfect applications for those fonts are web pages and software user interfaces (computer, cellular phones, console games and any other system that uses a screen interface). Unlike most pixel fonts, SCR fonts contain kerning information. Kerning is the adjustment of space between certain pairs of characters (like 'AV') to make text look more fluid, thus increasing legibility and appeal. To benefit from this feature, auto-kerning must be activated in the application. In Photoshop, kerning must be set to 'Metrics'. Although SCR fonts are optimized for screen, they can be used for print (in Illustrator or Indesign for example) for a decorative 'computer text' effect. In this case, there is no constraint: they can be used as any other font. For screen use (in Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash... ), they have to keep aligned with the screen pixel grid not to look blurred or distorted. To achieve this, here are the guidelines to follow: RESOLUTION If the application permits it (Photoshop, Fireworks), document resolution must be set to 72 pixels per inch. SIZE The font size must be set to 10 (or multiples of 10) points. POSITIONING & ALIGNMENT The reference points of text fields and text blocks (upper left corner for left aligned text, upper right for right aligned text) must be positioned at integer values of pixels. The dearJoe series of fonts came to life around the year 1999, when I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt to convert my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own hand had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use in their own personal projects. Which they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on Vietnamese riksjas, Tasmanian gyms and chocolate stores on 5th Avenue for instance. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what's now the JOEBOB graphics foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting has evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in coming to a result that can almost pass for actual handwriting. The 2019 dearJoe 7 font is the latest addition to this font family. All characters were scanned from handwritten notes, cherrypicking the characters and letter-combinations I liked best. They were written with a Lamy M66 B pen and only minor adjustments were made to the original scans, leaving most little flaws and rough edges as they were for a convincing ball-point on paper result. The font comes with over 150 ligatures, making sure the font has a variated and credible overall look and feel.

Nagel is a contemporary uniwidth display sans serif for headlines and short texts. It’s a closed low-contrast typeface with an emphasis on stroke joints. The length of the line set in Nagel remains the same in all weights. Nagel has all the advantages of monospaced typeface graphics, but none of their functional disadvantages. Characters in Nagel are made monospace-like wide, as opposed to traditionally narrow characters of proportional fonts, and often have slab serifs. Letters of monospaced fonts that have to be narrowed down considerably, have the usual width here. The scope of Nagel is branding and identity of IT companies, infographics, scientific and technical documentation — any areas where a technical, modern typeface with distinctive graphics may be required. The typeface includes three upright styles — Regular, Medium, Bold; two sets of 11 and 18 slanting degrees and a variable version with two axes: Weight and Slant. The Catenary typeface was designed with the goal of creating an extremely-readable sans-serif font that could weather the future. My latest typeface is a formal, copperplate script named Glade. Beginning as a project for a client who wanted several widths of a formal script style, the project never saw fruition. However, it did get me excited about the idea of a width family of steel nib scripts, ranging from extra narrow to extra wide, and the result is the Glade family. To give Glade a minor modern makeover from the original intent, the lowercase has been scaled up, and the Capitals scaled down for a more friendly personality. The character set has been expanded, and OpenType support has been added for unlimited fractions, ordinals, superiors and inferiors. So if you have the need for a formal connecting script, but are short on space, try Glade Narrow or Glade Extra Narrow. If space is not an issue, then the Regular, Wide or the generously gracious Extra Wide should do nicely. And if you get the whole family, well then you are set for anything that comes your way.

“Fanfare is such a fun typeface,” says Toshi Omagari, who revived the design for The Wolpe Collection. “It was my happiest discovery when I was digging through the Monotype archive. I came across it and had to check the designer’s name.” No wonder: Fanfare is modern, light and playful – not what you’d expect from an 80-year old design. From the original, very heavy weight design, Omagari started by creating a black weight, followed by four lighter weights for Wolpe Fanfare, preserving the character of the letterforms all the way down to a thin version. “I wanted to do more than digitize the original weight,” he says. “It’s surprisingly modern, and its skeleton, its basic structure, is so beautiful.” The new design packs more into a small space than most typefaces. It’s a natural for publication and advertising design. With displays capable of revealing fine details such as Fanfare’s subtly slanted baseline, its lovely forms will easily translate to mobile devices. The Quarantinus font was created during the 2020 covid 19 lock-down. Tranquility being all around, the JOEBOB graphics studio almost felt like a monastery, and as a result my style of writing and my choice of pen had to fit. All this writing was turned into an authentic handwritten script font with over 150 ligatures, which make it look very credible and spontaneous. The font is especially suitable for personalized 'handwritten' notes, cards and messages. It can be used on T-shirts and on shop-windows. It has an 'instant logo' quality, it can be used for tattoo-designs and it screams home-made everything. And in case you are a writer you now have an option to print your work in a way that seems as if you wrote it yourself. Please note that even though the font comes with a complete set of Western characters, accents and special signs, the Cyrillic and Greek characters that are in the font do not make a complete set.
