Museum Fournier is inspired by a set of Rococo capitals designed by Pierre Simon Fournier le Jeune circa 1760. The matrices are part of a set imported to Sweden by J.P. Lindh in 1818 from Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig, Germany. They are now in the Nordiska Museum in Stockholm. Type designer Torbjörn Olsson has expanded the original 31 lead matrices in the collection to 55 characters. Machin is a French word meaning 'thing'. Apparently, it is also a species of macaque from the Philippines, but I named this font after the French word! Machin is based on a really old font I made back in the day. It was called Whynot and (because I didn't know a thing about making fonts at the time) I could not get it to work properly, so it had its 15 minutes of fame before it was pulled off of the internet. Machin was made using the recycled glyphs from Whynot and it does work. It comes with extensive language support (yes, Vietnamese and Sami too), some handy ligatures and a lot of scribbly panache.

Allez Hop is a very useful font: it comes with all accents, bells and whistles and has been created using scans of handwritten text. It has a certain 'quickness' to it, not unlike someone jotted down a couple of lines on a notepad.

Static looks almost like it was stamped on paper: the black color is not evenly distributed and the background comes through the letters and consciously irregular forms reinforce the effect. The characters do not all have the same height, nor do they stand straight and regularly on the base line. A one-time co-worker of mine sometimes used a fanciful inkpen-style script in display-lettering situations. I liked it a lot. "Phil," I says, "why not do the whole alphabet, maybe a few little dingbats, and I'll make a font." Well, one day he presented me with a stack of posterboard; he'd done some letters, all right -- hundreds of 'em. I managed to boil these down into a typeface called Treefrog, a name that seems to match its organic jumble, its tall x-height, its left- and right-leaning stems, its thick and thin strokes. Full release has many dingbats.

A neo-grotesk with a bit more bite, this is Schizotype Grotesk. It's not your usual grot; this is purely display typography. Notches cut deep into the letterforms and the thick/thin contrast isn't always where you might expect. It's intended to be a challenging typeface - not beautiful or particularly 'useful' in any conventional sense, but it is at the very least interesting. In a world where everyone and their dog has their own grotesk offering, perhaps being interesting and that little bit different is in itself enough to give the face its utility. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What really matters is what you think! Schizotype Grotesk isn't bogged down with a million and one OpenType features you'll never use, but it does include proportional and tabular lining figures; automatic fractions; numerators and denominators; superscript and subscript numerals; case sensitive forms; and five stylistic sets that change [a], [g], [y], [IJ], and [@] respectively.

Never let it be said that a good pun and a good font name can't work well together. The vintage sheet music for a 1920s-era song called "King Tut" (not to be confused with the novelty tune by comedian Steve Martin) presented an oddly-interesting block font which is now available in digital form as Type Uncommon JNL. The pun derives from the font's name of "Type Uncommon", which is similar in sound to King Tut's full name (which is Tutankhaten).

Occasionally a type design is started - then set aside for whatever reason - before eventually being completed. More often than not, the original source material is forgotten, so proper attribution cannot be made. Such is the case for a hand lettered Art Nouveau alphabet likely found within the pages of an early Speedball lettering book from around the 1920s. This playful and casual design is now digitally reproduced as Nouveau Signage JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.
