A flower became crushed in the door frame of the studio (a fancy shed at the end of an overgrown garden)... pretty pale yellow stamens scattered on the floor... I sprinkled some on the scanner and arranged them into a light and airy font for springtime. There are two alphabets, both uppercase, but one with doubled uprights for variety, and to provide a hint of extra weight. I didn't want to distort the natural shapes, or make up any of my own, so some letterforms are pretty quirky, and some characters just weren't possible... but there's a hidden bunch of flowery and grassy ornaments.

Linotype Minos is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was designed by Swiss artist Christian Goetz, who named it after King Minos of Crete of the Bronze Age. Typical of scripts of this time were the ornamental borders around the characters, found on palaces of Knossos, Phaistos and Mallia. These borders surround every character of Linotype Minos, making it exclusively for headlines in larger point sizes. Single characters can also be used as initials mixed with other alphabets, especially with constructed sans serif and modern serif fonts.

Linotype Sinah is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by the German artist Peter Huschka, Linotype Sinah is a rounded, ornamental font with many strokes ending in teardrop forms. The letters of this wide-running font do not share a common base line. The capital S and the lower case l both drop under it although neither have descenders. Overall, Linotype Sinah has an almost Asian or Indian feel. The font must be used with generous line spacing and is intended exclusively for headlines or shorter texts in point sizes of 12 or larger.

Museum is the Wundes foundry's first font revival. These letter forms are scanned from the engravings of Freeman Delamotte who in 1879 published a spectacular set of ancient and mediaeval ornamental alphabets. The original forms for this font were created in 1490, a few years before Columbus discovered America. There was not much information on the origin of this font, save that it came from a British museum, hence the name. The original character set was missing the letters J,P,V and W so I've constructed these letters in the same style to complete the alphabet. Other than those 4 additions, the engravings are true to their original forms.

Mostaza is a new lettering font designed by Carine de Wandeleer. The Open Type features include 164 alternates, also in capital letters, and 100 ligatures. All this makes the text lively and bouncy, without the monotony of obviously repeated letterforms. In addition, we have included some ornaments designed to support the font, some were specially designed to be combined with the letters for a "more calligraphic" effect (access to them through the glyphs palette). Mostaza is doing very well to create titles, logos and posters for brand and packaging, invitations, greeting cards, magazines and book covers, children's material, fashion and wherever you want. Alejandro Paul’s Brownstone Slab is based on his own popular, award-winning, Brownstone Sans typeface.  Like the original Sans, Brownstone Slab is a 21st-century design, influenced by the Victorian decorative motifs of the ironwork and carved decorations of New York City row houses. Brownstone Slab’s sturdy serifs make it slightly more masculine and solid than its predecessor. As with Brownstone Sans, Brownstone Slab includes character sets for Latin-based languages, including Western and Eastern European, Baltic, Turkish, Maltese, Celtic and Welsh. It includes over 1500 glyphs, including small capitals, swash characters, alternates, and ligatures, in both Light and Thin weights. Ornamental frames are provided in all weights.

Modesto Open is now a Chromatic Font Family. The old font Modesto Open has been improved, renamed Modesto Open Primary and joined by four new fonts that ornament and augment the Primary font in many different ways. All Caps. Modesto is a loose-knit group of Font Families based on a signpainting lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. In 2014 seven new Italic fonts and two Chromatic families were added.

Chianti was designed at Bitstream by senior designer Dennis Pasternak in 1991 and initially released in 1995. The intent behind the design was to provide a humanist sanserif of high readability at a wide range of sizes and weights. Humanist sanserifs (others that fall into this category are Linotype’s Frutiger and Optima, and Monotype’s Gill Sans) are an attempt to improve the readability of sanserifs by applying classical roman structure to the letterforms. To enhance its versatility, Mr. Pasternak designed a wide variety of alternate characters, rare ligatures, ornaments and swashes. Chianti is a friendly sanserif useful for a broad range of typographic needs.

Franz Kafka’s manuscripts have always been a source of inspiration for designer Julia Sysmäläinen. At first she was just interested in literary aspects but later she noticed that content and visual form can not be separated in the work of this ingenious writer. Analyzing Kafka’s handwriting at the Berlin National Library, Julia was inspired to design the typeface FF Mister – by now a well known classic. Over the years, FF Mister K became a handsome typeface family and even produced offspring: the Josef K Patterns. Some of Kafka’s most expressive letterforms were the starting point for these decorative ornaments. How do the Patterns work? Outlines and fillings correspond to the uppercase and the lowercase letters on your keyboard. You can use them separately or layer them on top of each other. If you write a line of “pattern-text” in lowercase and repeat it underneath in uppercase you get a row of fillings followed by a row of outlines. Now you can color them and then set line space = 0 to get a single line of layered colored ornaments. Alternatively, activating OpenType / stylistic set / stylistic alternates will also unite the two lines to a single layered line. Ornaments family with four different sets plus a decorative capitals font from the rare, valuable and amazing Allerlei Zierat book from Schelter & Gieseck (1902). A research and free interpretation by Intellecta Design. This encyclopedic specimen book of the Leipzig, Germany type foundry and printing supply house J.G. Schelter & Giesecke features, as the title indicates, all kinds of decoration for supplying printing of every type. On the title page, the firm boasts winning grand prize in 1900 in Paris (presumably at the Exposition Universelle). It is hard to do justice in a short description to the variety of styles (traditional, Jugenstil, etc.) and categories (certificates, letterheads, borders, ornaments, exotic motifs, flowers, animals, silhouettes, menus, greeting cards, vignettes humorous and otherwise, images of bicyclists, occupational symbols, portraits, Classical figures, religious art, heraldry, ships, trains, athletes, etc., etc.) offered in this volume. Some of the examples are printed in color, most are in black-and-white. The Jugenstil cover of this copy shows minor wear and soiling. The plate of “Gust. Carlsson & Co., Stockholm” is attached to the front pastedown. A small fraction of pages show minor soiling, a pencil notation or a short closed tear. Two of the fold-outs at the back have a little more damage-one is missing a 1x2 inch piece along the margin, the other has a 3-inch closed tear and an edge which is crumpled. While in the same vein and spirit as Burgues and Compendium, Bellissima began from an entirely different thread from those fonts. It started with Alex Trochut generously showing me a gorgeous lettering book from his grandfather’s library: Bellezas de la Caligrafía, by Ramón Stirling, 1844. Stirling was one of the Latin calligraphy pioneers who introduced a refined version of English calligraphy in Spain and made it popular in the nineteenth century. Some scans from that book served as initial basis for the caps in my Poem Script. But it was always in the back of my mind that I should do a copperplate, and the Stirling model was the perfect source. My intention was to veer away from Stirling’s exuberant ornamentation, and work within simplified forms of his ideas. As it usually is with most of my projects, Bellissima became its own bird and shaped its own flying patterns. Suddenly there were many ligatures, multiple endings and swashed connections, hundreds of alternates for both uppercase and lowercase. Bellissima has an effusive energy that appeals much beyond its sourcing. It’s intended for these modern times of appreciation for old crafty things like stationery and letterpress, where its origins help it shine brightly. A truly faithful ally for every designer looking for fresh yet familiar and reliable font choice. Geller was created as a part of graduation project in Typowa Pracownia at Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It is a typeface family especially intended for newspapers, magazines, and advertising. Geller family comes in two optical sizes - headline and text, so it is a complete solution for editorial purposes. During the design process, the technical needs of certain typographic fractions were examined. The capital letters were specially and purposely designed: its modern proportions (derived from Didone fonts) with optimized inner lights as well as short ascenders and descenders work very well within titles and leads. In addition to a wide range of OpenType features, Geller contains bullets & dingbats providing many possibilities of entry points in editorial design. Compact diacritics, proportionally tall x-height, narrow letter construction, all these features allow easy typesetting of narrow text columns and spreads.

Also known as Schoolbook. 900+ glyphs. After Linn Boyd Benton's and Morris Fuller Benton's 1894 lower contrast version of Scotch Modern, Didone. The part of the large project on revival and further development (by drawing many additional glyphs) of the 20th century’s typewriters’ fonts. And especially the most famous, versatile and beautiful typewriter: IBM Selectric’s golfball fonts, lost for the civilization for many decades after ‘80s, not being created since then in digital vector form. This new sub-project started in July 2018 for the restoration of the most beautiful classical typefaces, used during the 20th century on the extremely rare now IBM Selectric Composer typewriters / desktop publishing systems. Together with Nick Hamze and the Right Reverend Theodore Munk, the collectors of old typewriters. IBM showed the perfect taste by developing these best historical book typefaces of the human civilization for typewriters. So people could type then using both the real book faces, and the famous classical ones.

Modern typefaces refer to designs that bear similarities to Bodoni and other Didone faces, which were first created during the late 1700s. Ed Benguiat developed ITC Modern No. 216 in 1982 for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). Showing a high degree of contrast between thick and thin strokes, as well as a large x-height, this revival is more suited to advertising display purposes than the setting of long running text, or books. Many traits in Benguiat's design are worth further notice. The thick stems of the roman weights have a very stately, solid presence. Their thin serifs have been finely grafted on, a masterful solution to the challenge of bracketing presented by Modernist designs. The italic weights have a very flowing, script-like feel to them, and the letters take the form of true italics, not obliques. The ITC Modern No. 216 family contains the following font styles: Light, Light Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Heavy, and Heavy Italic.

Schotis Text is a workhorse typeface designed for perfect reading on running texts. Its design is based in Scotch Roman 19th-century style but designed from scratch, with a more contemporary and not nostalgic look. It has seven weights plus matching italics, with 1100 glyphs per font, with a very extended character set for Latin based languages as well as Vietnamese, and shows all its potential with OpenType-savvy applications. Every font includes small caps, ligatures, old-style, lining, proportional and tabular figures, superscript, subscript, numerators, denominators, and fractions. The Scotch Romans were one of the most used letters during the 19th and early 20th century, but they don’t have their own place in the main typographical classifications. They appeared at the beginning of the 19th century with Pica No. 2 in the catalog of William Miller (1813) and assumed the British route towards high contrast and vertical axis modern Romans. In fact, they were called just Modern. In opposition to the continental route of Fournier, Didot, and Bodoni, the English way opted for a wider, more legible letter also resistant to bad printing conditions. The name Schotis comes from the misspelling of Scottish that gave the name to a popular dance in Madrid in the 19th-century. It first was called Schotis and today is knows as Chotis.

AW Conqueror Sans was born out of this desire to fuse geometric and humanistic sans. It remains a typeface fundamentally influenced by both Bauhaus spirit — with its simplified geometric forms — and Jan Tschichold’s attempts to link this modular spirit to Eric Gill’s humanist sans serif. AW Conqueror Sans is a claimed French synthesis of Germanic Modernism and English classical tradition.
