Who doesn’t like Spaghetti & Cheese? Well, my son doesn’t like it, because he hates cheese, but he seems to be one of the few. Spaghetti & Cheese is also a handmade font: slightly slanted, slightly eroded, yet very legible and clear. It was made with a Japanese ‘Shake & Write’ marker pen. One waxy black crayon was used up, entirely down to the tiniest nub, by the making of this font. It’s fun! The display font Docklan arose from experiments of candle-grease and black ink. Book covers, music festivals, wedding invitations or just an essay in school – Docklan will allow you to make a statement in any setting! Boris is my son: he was born on January 7th and he is as cute as can be. Boris Brush font is a very loud, very useful brush typeface, which I created using some fine-haired brushes and black paint. Midnight Chalker is, well, a chalk(ish) font and it was (fro the greater part) created around the midnight hour. That’s usually when I get my inspiration. Midnight Chalker is a tall, eroded font - all caps, but the upper and lower case differ and can be mixed. Of course it comes with more diacritics than you can throw a chalkboard at.

Kempoka is a Japanese word describing someone who practices Kempo. Kempo, or Chuan Fa in Chinese, is a martial art with roots in China and Japan. I thought of this brush font just before my weekly kempo-training and I figured the name suited the font style. Kempoka comes with alternates and ligatures, and has a black belt in diacritics!

Gerusa is a sans-serif technical typeface family by Loligovulgaris.com. It features a 970+ glyph set per cut, with monospaced uppercase and text-suitable lowercase characters, a very complete set of diacritics, math glyphs and a full range of OpenType features. This family is OCR and ISO inspired, with an engineering/architectural feel, robust and pragmatic, with the usual technical ugliness chopped away.

Rosy Lee is Cockney slang for a cup of tea - which I drank when it was time to come up with a name for my new font. Rosy Lee (the font) is a 3D typeface with a lot of character. I like the expression ‘being on tenterhooks’. Not that I’m on tenterhooks very often! Tenterhooks was made with a broken satay skewer (see poster 2 for the actual thing) and Chinese ink. It came out rather rough, but it does have a nice flow and a certain ‘wild elegance’. Comes with double letter ligatures and a whole bunch of diacritics.

I have always been fascinated by Grigory Rasputin, the rogue ‘monk’ who influenced the Russian Tsar Nicholas and - according to rumours - bedded the Tsarina. Grigory font was handmade with the use of a Chinese marker pen and rough paper. Grigory comes with all the trimmings; some alternate glyphs, a few double letter ligatures, a great amount of diacritics and basic Cyrillic as well.

A Konditorei is a German Confectionery Shop. A good Konditorei offers a wide variety of pastries and often also serves as a café. This handmade script font is like the wares in a confectionery shop: full of calories, but sweet and delicious. Use it for your food blogs, your magazines and product packaging. Moonlight Serenade is a 1939 song composed by Glenn Miller, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. Moonlight Serenade font is an all caps affair - very legible, very recognizable and very useful. African Jazz is an informal and vigorous font that moves to the rhythms of Africa. Its angular shapes are reminiscent of the syncopated jazz beat that grew out of the heart of Africa. Burobu, in case you’d like to know, means ‘blob’ in Japanese. I thought it was quite an appropriate name for this blob-like font! Habana Vieja is inspired by hand-painted signage in Havana’s old town. Letters are defined by their drop-shadow and worn outlines; suggestive of a sunny environment. Coquillage is French for seashell or shellfish. Since I’m going to France this year for a camping holiday with my family, I thought it was a good idea to give this charming connected script a ‘holiday name’! Coquillage was handmade with a Japanese pen. It is a lovely connected script and comes with double-letter ligatures and a full range of diacritics.

Eurotypo SII is a sibling of our Eurotypo Sans family and is composed of two Expanded weights and six Condensed styles. Each font of Eurotypo SII contain 359 glyphs and advanced typographical support with OpenType features such as ligatures, discretional ligatures and case-sensitive forms. It also contain diacritics for Central European languages. All aspect of readability and accurate kerning were carefully controlled.

Prince Frog started out as an attempt to 'pimp' Rabbit On The Moon font. It quickly evolved into an entirely different typeface with just a hint of 'Rabbit' in it. Raqmi Monoshape is a simplified version of the Raqmi font family with unified (non-varying) shapes. This font family supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It includes two weights: regular and light, each of which has normal and left-slanted Italic versions. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil style utilizing varying x-heights. The Mutamathil type style utilizes only one glyph per Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards. Raqmi Monoshape includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar high and low levels—top left corner—, to clearly distinguish them from the letters. Tatweel is a zero-width glyph.

Arsinoe is a condensed geometric typeface noted for their unorthodox long ascenders and low x-height. Family consists of five different weights plus two special versions accompanied by their italic version. The Arsinoe type family includes extended Latin characters, ligatures, lining figures, OSF (Old Style Figures), scientific inferiors and many OpenType features. From poster design to editorial layout, Arsinoe is intended for a wide range of uses but use in small sizes are not recommended. Important technical notice: Combining diacritical marks (U+0300, U+0301, U+0303, U+0309, U+0323) are only 'compatibility characters' for codepage 'MS Windows 1258 Vietnamese'. Combining diacritical marks (U+0312, U+0315, U+0326) are only 'compatibility characters' for Czech, Latvian, Romanian and Slovak language. OpenType features 'Mark to Base' and 'Mark to Mark' is not supported. Kerning is prepared as single ('flat') table for maximum possible compatibility with older software.

Milafleur presents the second member in the series of pictorial fonts with calligraphic miniatures by Lyudmila Mikhailova. The first font of the series, Milanette, was released one month earlier. Milafleur contains more than 60 pictures -- mostly flowers which define the origin of its name. In contrast to Milanette the pictures in Milafleur are less abstract and thus can be used as small illustrations in greeting texts, postcards, intimate notes, diaries and even in Christmas cards because some of the pictures show strobiles instead of flowers and coniferous branches instead of leaves. Released by ParaType in 2011.

Kodama are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. The term is also used for trees in which a kodama houses. Kodama Forest is a rough, spikey and inky font, in the style of the great Ralph Steadman. Kodama Forest comes with a bunch of alternates, some interesting ligatures and a lot of splatter. And, of course, all the diacritics you can throw a tree spirit at.

Tobu means 'to jump' in Japanese. I came across a haiku by Matsuo Bashô wich reads: The old pond… a frog jumps in… the sound of water (Furu ike ya… kawazu tobikomu… mizu no oto). The font is named Tobu because of its jumpy character: it doesn't have a real baseline, which makes it playful and fun to use. Tobu comes with a pond full of diacritics.

Finding my long-lost inkwell was a lucky moment for me and it resulted in a whole bunch of brushy/inky fonts. The latest font to leak out of this well is Knockdown. It is a bold and wild brushface, but very legible. Use if for your posters, book covers and T-shirts! Or, whatever else you like. Comes with a KO of diacritics.
