This sometimes-top-heavy, sometime-bottom-heavy, sometimes-centered typecase is based on an old Photolettering face designed by the irrepressible Dave West, originally called "Nickelodeon". That name was already taken, so I chose another with a nod to the 1953 film starring Leslie Caron. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.

Metropolis Bold was commissioned by Publish magazine for their 1990 redesign. Although other digital versions exist, I think this was the first one and is characterized by extremely pointy serifs. It is well to remember in laying out copy for Metropolis to allow plenty of white space in the layout. Metropolis is based on the 1932 Stempel cut as designed by W. Schwerdtner.

Grafical is a contemporary take on 19th-century sans serifs. In this family, the amount of geometry inherent within the letterforms has been amped up. Many shapes have received further streamlining, too. All the geometric forms you see have been optically corrected, ensuring their delivery of better legibility. Michael Hoffmann manufactures digital fonts for 30 years. At URW++ he contributed to the technological progress. Over the years, he also specialized in the ideal representation of fonts on screen and the complex assembly of international fonts with scripts of all countries. In his latest project he put the emphasis on developing a highly readable typeface. Less interested in the design as in the functionality of this typeface, he designed Arsapia which he has now installed as a system font on all his computers. Michael Hoffmann studied Japanology at the University of Hamburg and traveled in the early years of his professional activity frequently to Japan, there to train the IKARUS font production tools to Japanese customers. In his spare time he plays guitar or golf depending on the weather. The typeface Arsapia has been designed in such a way that all three font styles Light, Regular and Bold have the same width. When a user therefore opts for the use of Arsapia Light, even though he has already written his text in Regular, nothing changes with respect to the letter tracking. When choosing the Bold for emphasis: Nothing changes except the blackness of the letters. A font change does not engender unwanted line and page breaks of itself. All letters can be clearly distinguished from each other. 1 l I O 0 are all different. For programmers and lovers of monospaced fonts Michael Hoffmann has developed a fourth typeface: Arsapia Mono. Gerard Unger’s new typeface Alverata is a twenty-first-century type-face inspired by the shapes of Romanesque capitals in inscriptions of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, without being a close imitation of them. It is additionally based on the early twentieth-century model, but tweaked so as to prevent blandness and monotony. Alverata performs beautifully in both screen and on paper, delivering excellent legibility. Its letters are open and friendly in small sizes and lively and attractive in large sizes. They are robust, and show refinement in their detail. Unger’s Alverata is an extensive type family, with versions for both formal and informal applications, and with Greek and Cyrillic relatives. Alverata consists of three different fonts: Alverata, Alverata Irregular and Alverata Informal, that vary in form and width, but maintain the same spirit. The Irregular version is particularly inspired by the Insular letterforms, the uncials, and their constantly changing positioning. Alverata strikes a balance among Europe’s diversity of languages, combining contemporary typographical practices with features of medieval letterforms, from the time when Europe came into being. Visually, some written languages, such as Czech and Maltese, differ quite strongly from languages like English and German, notably because of their many accented characters. While other typefaces will show this difference, Alverata removes it. As a result, Alverata enables harmonious convergence of languages.  For the development of the Greek letterforms, Unger collaborated with Gerry Leonidas (University of Reading) and Irene Vlachou (Athens), and with Tom Grace on the Cyrillic letterforms.

Bradley Texting: a clear, friendly and easily legible calligraphy font, also suited to electronic devices With Bradley Texting, Richard Bradley has published another calligraphic typeface that recalls the style of Bradley Hand and Bradley Type. In this case, however, Bradley has advanced the style with clearer forms for display on electronic instruments and on other formats. Two other font families paved the way to the newly introduced Bradley Texting. In the mid-1990s, Bradley published Bradley Hand, with its rough contours. Since these coarse forms do not cut a good figure in the larger font sizes, Bradley Type followed, with smooth letters. During the development of Bradley Type, the idea for a further font came about ? one in the style of the two other calligraphic typefaces, but with simpler, easily legible forms and suited to electronic devices like mobile phones or tablets. The first plain weight of Cutoff was designed in 2005 to be used in Miele, an independent Italian free magazine. The need was for an elegant, unusual and legible semi-serif with contemporary flavour. I was fascinated by the deconstructivist work of Jeff Keedy (Hard Times Thick), Phil Baines (Can You, You Can) and Otl Aicher (Rotis), so my aim was to get the feeling of a cut transitional typeface; at the same time felt the exigence to work on the whole shape of the glyphs, in order to soften the “90s deconstructivist” effect and obtain a more balanced and readable design. In the last years I further worked on the typeface adding the other styles, extending the character set and refining the letterforms. Finally the precious collaboration with URW++ brought in 2010 to a complete OpenType Pro font family, with multilingual and advanced typographic features. Fulvio Bisca, July 2010

Having spent all of my teenage years in the 90s, it's no surprise that this very particular decade resonates so deeply in me. As a graphic designer, I still think the strongest visual languages of the last 50 years or so come from that time. Bold aggressive attitude is what most people remember from those designs. What they seem to forget—or, rather, to have completely ignored—is that some incredibly elegant and subtle styles emerged from those years. It still amazes me how they reflected so well the period in which they were conceived, taking style construction to the next level. Riff is a natural development of some of my thoughts about the 90s. Mixed with a very contemporary feel, it embodies several idiosyncrasies I absorbed over years of exposure to favorite design pieces, fonts, music, films and other cultural products that share the same spirit.
