Handwriting of a strong Carelian personality revived: It’s autumn time once again, harvesting season, mushroom & berry time – the favourite season of my Karelian aunt Katri. A postcard she sent me more than twenty years ago had inspired me to SyysScript, “Script of Autumn” in Finnish. Katri had a very kind but also energetic personality, and I always thought her handwriting was a mirror of it. By making SyysScript I felt I could revive some of her unforgettable character. My Finnish autumn font has by now become a favourite for many and is branding fine food in both the Eastern and the Western hemisphere – even far beyond the arctic circle. “SyysScript“ is actually a growing family. For enhanced functionality in small sizes I added “SyysScript Eco” a year ago, a style with shortened extensions and simplified letterforms especially suited for packaging. And this autumn, a special one for Finland which is celebrating its 99th birthday, SyysScript grew again: Two long awaited newcomers, “SyysScript FeltTip” and “SyysScript FeltTip Eco” joined the family. They are bolder and softer than the previous styles but keep their positive, lighthearted feel. ITC Leawood was begun by designer Les Usherwood and finished by his talented staff at Typsettra in Toronto, Canada, after his untimely death. A similar calligraphic series to ITC Usherwood, following alternative options, the typeface features small, well-defined serifs which aid legibility and allow for close spacing.

It was our initial intention to develop a suitable lowercase for Les Usherwood's Elston typeface, based on a few characters from an old German typeface called Hermes Grotesque (Woellmer, Berlin). However, the new design quickly took on a life of its own, and we decided to call it ‘Creighton’.

Casagrande Collection has been designed in 2020 by the Italiantype Team (Manuel Alvaro, Valentino Coppi and Mario De Libero), working in close collaboration with Italian lettering artist, illustrator and calligrapher Alberto Casagrande, with help from the Zetafonts Team (Francesco Canovaro, Andrea Tartarelli and Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini). The goal of the project was to use as inspiration Alberto's colorful, vintage themed digital illustration style to develop a suite of closely related typefaces that, used together, would allow designers to replicate the nostalgic charme of Italian poster and product design from the thirties and the forties. Two color overprints, coarse dithering, handmade calligraphy, reminiscences of art deco, hints of modernism and pop culture references: all this and more mixed in a exuberant and playful collection, created with illustrators, poster artists and book cover designers in mind. The final product is 24-font package with six display families with styles varying from the thirties-inspired Antifascista (3 weights + 3 dithering weights) and Deco (3 weights + 3 inline weights), to the modernist Casabau (5 weights), to the geometric Grind (4 widths), to the vintage elegance of the two script families, Reclame and Casatiello. The collection is complemented by a two-color icon set font, Casagrande Ornaments, allowing any designer to easily explore the creative possibilities of this incredibly powerful creative collection. Please Note: Casagrande Antifascista Ombra simulates fine dithering and may be processor intensive for some older computers. Use Casagrande Antifascista if it slows down your system.

Grotesques can answer a really wide variety of design problems and go from small sizes to large without missing a beat. Vinila is Flora de Carvalho's take on the genre. The family’s multi-purpose intention comes from having 4 widths - from compressed to extended, each with 6 weights and obliques. Rhythm and music played an important part in the design of this font, which started off as the lettering for a Brazilian Music album. Its distinctiveness comes from having powerful ink traps that go from elegant and supple in the lighter styles to commanding and impactful in the heavier styles. An exquisite Didot font in 18 series Ambroise is a contemporary interpretation of various typefaces belonging to Didot’s late style, conceived circa 1830, including the original forms of g, y, &; and to a lesser extent, k. These unique glyphs are found in Gras Vibert, cut by Michel Vibert. Vibert was the appointed punchcutter of the Didot family during this period. It is the Heavy, whom sources were surest that Jean François Porchez has been used as the basis for the design of the typeface family. In the second half of the 19th century, it was usual to find fat Didots in several widths in the catalogs of French type foundries. These same typefaces continued to be offered until the demise of the big French foundries in the 1960s. Ambroise attempts to reproduce more of what we see printed on paper in the 19th century; a more accurate representation of Didot punches. So, the unbracketed serifs are not truly square straight-line forms but use tiny transitional curves instead. The result on the page appears softer and less straight, particularly in larger sizes. Workhorse is a Sign Painter’s Gothic developed by Master Sign Painter Greg Reid. Workhorse captures the true essence of hand lettering. From the tapered waists to the elegant snaps of the brush; these elements present a warmth unseen in today’s mechanically stiff Gothics. Greg Reid and Charles Borges de Oliveira collaborated to bring this truly one of a kind typeface to fruition. With the power of Open type, Workhorse utilizes Contextual Alternates to create random variations of the capitals and lowercase letters. This allows your text to have subtle differences in the letters without losing form which helps to create an honest hand lettered look. This feature can be turned on or off to suit your individual style. You also have the ability to manually choose the glyph variations from the glyph pallet to help you create one of kind designs. While in the same vein and spirit as Burgues and Compendium, Bellissima began from an entirely different thread from those fonts. It started with Alex Trochut generously showing me a gorgeous lettering book from his grandfather’s library: Bellezas de la Caligrafía, by Ramón Stirling, 1844. Stirling was one of the Latin calligraphy pioneers who introduced a refined version of English calligraphy in Spain and made it popular in the nineteenth century. Some scans from that book served as initial basis for the caps in my Poem Script. But it was always in the back of my mind that I should do a copperplate, and the Stirling model was the perfect source. My intention was to veer away from Stirling’s exuberant ornamentation, and work within simplified forms of his ideas. As it usually is with most of my projects, Bellissima became its own bird and shaped its own flying patterns. Suddenly there were many ligatures, multiple endings and swashed connections, hundreds of alternates for both uppercase and lowercase. Bellissima has an effusive energy that appeals much beyond its sourcing. It’s intended for these modern times of appreciation for old crafty things like stationery and letterpress, where its origins help it shine brightly. Bellissima Script Pro is a complete font with almost 2000 characters full of alternates, swashes, ligatures & ornaments covering a wide palette of latin languages and Bellissima Script Redux is a random sample of glyphs totally usable with a reduced price.

The original Frutiger typeface was designed in the early 1970s by Adrian Frutiger and his studio for the way finding system of the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. Soon after the airport was opened, a huge demand for the typeface arose from companies wanting to employ it in other signage systems, as well as in printed matter. The Frutiger typeface came out as part of the Linotype library in 1977. Epitomizing functionality and clarity both in signage and as a bread-and-butter typeface in print, Frutiger became a modern classic. Neue Frutiger® is the 2009 version of the Frutiger typeface family. It was revised and improved by Akira Kobayashi in close collaboration with Adrian Frutiger. While Frutiger Next, the 1999 revision, introduced a new concept (including a larger x-height, a more pronounced ascender height, narrower letter-spacing and, most notably, an italic with calligraphic traits), Neue Frutiger returns to the original 1977 design. The result is a well-balanced range of 10 finely-graded weights. Despite the various changes, the ‘New Frutiger’ still fits perfectly with Frutiger and serves to harmoniously enhance the styles already in existence. Neue Frutiger Variable are font files which are featuring two axis and have a preset instance from UltraLight to ExtraBlack and Condensed to Extended. The lifetime of Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492) coincides with the rise of metal type as it displaced broad pen calligraphy for the production of books. This revolution marked the end of formal Western calligraphy, as the industry employed metalworkers who designed type according to geometric measurement while calligraphers were forced to become secretaries who practiced handwriting systems. Renaissance Florence should have witnessed the marriage of calligraphy and typography, just as all the other arts and sciences flourished as classical learning was applied to technical advances; but the metalworkers and geometricians measured, dissected and recast the calligraphic letters by crude indirect methods, and in the end took all the life out of them. Here they languished until digital type has made it possible to render the precise motion of the broad pen stroke into type. Lorenzo is a confluence of many strains from the Middle Ages, brought together within the classical harmony of the capitals. It attempts to bypass metal type, using calligraphic means to achieve the precision of type while retaining the life of the stroke: a classical font that would be familiar to Lorenzo himself as well as to the modern eye. The Lorenzo family comes in four weights, ranging from light to bold. Two sets of italics, one with swashed caps and ascenders, complement each weight. The family boasts extensive language support and an offering of over fifty calligraphic ornaments/flourishes included within the character set.

The main inspiration is from Art Nouveau which flourished in Europe at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This design included furniture (Majorelle, Lalique) and architecture (Victor Horta, Henry Van de Velde, Gaudi, Alfons Mucha). But Hector Guimard remains the favorite for all aspects of its art and, of course, its typefaces used on the Parisian Metropolitan posters. In particular, the various kerning of the various letters he used to make the poster a whole design from singular designs, leading to numerous variations. As a designer, I first worked with the individual glyphs Hector Guimard designed and I discovered that they vary constantly from a poster to another, depending on the overall result he was looking for. Another difficulty in transferring his design to printing is that there was no lower case. I was excited to create the whole font from the original designs of Hector Guimard, incorporating its variations and "crazy kerning". After several attempts, it appeared to be impossible to include all variations and I slightly moved to my own new design as a complete font, upper and lower case, with kerning. I voluntarily limited the ascenders and descenders to the usual typography so that it can be used from 10 / 12 points. This version can be used to edit letters and books in the context of Art, specially Art Nouveau and Art Deco of course, posters of any kind.

The Jantze font is a project undertaken by Dan Bailey of Fontosaurus and Michael Jantze, creator of the nationally-syndicated comic strip, The Norm. All their royalties from the font will go to The Lance Armstrong Foundation. For those that have been living under a rock for the last five years, Lance is a professional bike racer that overcame advanced testicular cancer to not only come back to his sport, but to dominate its premiere event, the Tour de France. In climbing to the top of his sport, he has become a legend among cyclists and a beacon of hope for those battling cancer and their families. His foundation provides financial grants to researchers working to improve our odds against the disease, individuals stricken with cancer, and survivors of the disease that are advocates for survivorship issues in their communities. Michael Jantze and Dan Bailey would like you to consider the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that brought us to this project: "The purpose of life is not to be happy. Mi negra is a funny and hilarious typography designed especially for children, thought and created by Isabel de Gregorio. It could be described as an original combination between a semi-handwright and semi sans-serif font. Thanks to its structure and nice endings "Mi Negra" is recommended for composing short texts (logotypes, packing, posters, etc.). It may similarly be used for illustrations and comics, as well as in printing press works for children from 6 to 13 years old for instance. Mi Negra has been conceived to be a useful support in all kinds of illustrations works (please note that Isabel, the type designer, considers herself primarily an illustrator). The font designer of Mi Negra tells that every time she needed to provide some text data (i.e. in children infographies) and needed to make them more understandable and suitable for children, she used this typography. The former idea was than to create a font who could be a second option to comic sans, but as the project started to reveal its forms, it was clear that it was revealing another connotation and its own character. In this way, Mi Negra went on modifying its forms and the more it developed, the more it was showing its new characteristics and concepts. The family is composed of three weighs: Light, regular and black. It provides also interesting functional ligatures. It also includes a dingbat with nice doggies. It has 434 characters and can work with 208 languages.

The name Dash Wisher is a wordplay. The letters of the font are also quite playful - you never know what comes next, when typing. There is no exact x-heigh, the baseline is jumpy, the descender and ascender are messed up...there are no real rules for Dash Wisher! But with all that in mind, it comes out surprisingly legible, which means it does have a wide range of use. Let your fantasy and imagination break the boundaries and Dash Wisher do the rest - or maybe the other way around! :) I've added both ligatures to substitute double letters and a set of alternate letters as well.

Barbieri is a casual sans type family, based on a German lettering style from the 1960s. The original hand-drawn alphabet was used in a rather peculiar edition of Der Barbier von Bagdad, an opera composed by Peter Cornelius. Our efforts to identify the cover designer have been, so far, unsuccessful. As fans of informal typography and popular lettering styles, we thought these few thin letters deserved a re-incarnation as a complete type family. Andrés Torresi and Marta Sánchez Marco were in charge of the production work. Now Barbieri has 6 weights suitable for packaging, posters, and music covers. It resembles a certain 'Americana' spirit, though with a Germanic twist.
