A sugarloaf was a conical lump in which refined sugar was sold until the late 19th century. In Fryslân you can buy sûkerbôle - a yeasty white bread containing large chunks of sugar. I must have been dreaming about the latter when I named this font! Sugarloaf is a versatile, happy, handmade display font. It comes in an inline and a black style.

Modesto Initials had existed as a single font for several years. I recently added a fill font to put color in the Inlines. The Inline font still works by itself. The Fill font works alone too, as an ultra Modesto on steroids. They work best together. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. In 2014 seven new Italic fonts and two Chromatic families were added. There is a downloadable MODESTO USER MANUAL PDF in the Gallery section for this family.

Brazilian designer Eduardo Omine designed his Beret family of typefaces in an attempt to create a warm counterpart to the clean, minimalist sans serif of the 20th Century. The most individual characteristics of Beret are the terminals at the ends of its vertical strokes. They are slightly bent", simulating a subtle flare. Like many classic sans-serif typefaces (e.g., the original Syntax and Univers), this family does not include true (calligraphic) italics. Instead, a masterful set of obliques has been created. As Stanley Morison articulated in the early 1920s and 30s, these slanted versions of the regular "roman" faces may even work better when one wishes to emphasize certain words or passages within a text. The Scriptuale family, which contains eight styles, is a contemporary upright calligraphic face. Designed by German designer Renate Weise in 2003, this family of typefaces speaks to the present, while at the same time reflecting on a lyrical past. The letterforms of the Scriptuale family are romanticized, they reference German calligraphic styles from the 19th and early 20th Centuries. For instance the design of Scriptuale's uppercase strays from the canon of classical proportion into romantic idealism. While the C and O are drawn according to the ancient quadratic proportions - almost twice as wide, optically, as the E or the L - the letter A is wider than would be expected, and the D narrower. These subtle differences introduce a different rhythm into text set in Scriptuale than Italic styles of calligraphy may offer. Scriptuale's Gs merit special notice: both the upper and lower case G lunge slightly forward, further enhancing the dynamic quality of the text. Also unique in Scriptuale's design is the lowercase width: the letterforms appear slightly condensed; they have large x-heights to compensate for this. In a delightful twist, the number 2's beak has been closed by drawing it full-circle, back into the stem: this references a style of letter design that was practiced, among other places, by artists from the old Klingspor foundry in Offenbach Germany. Typefaces constructed there easily captured the zeitgeist of the romantic period, but are less calligraphic than Scriptuale (e.g., Rudolf Koch's Koch Antiqua). A semi-serif face (like Prof. Hermann Zapf's Optima or Otl Aicher's Rotis Semi), some of Scriptuale's letters have serifs (D), and some do not (A). And although both the B and the E normally have the same "structure" on their left side, Weise has drawn them differently in Scriptuale. These strengthen the calligraphic-like quality of the family. Harri –“stone” in Basque language– is a display font based on the peculiar letter forms used in signs and fascias all over the Basque Country. This idiosyncratic lettering style, very often used as an identity signifier, evolved from ancient inscriptions carved on gravestones which can still be found in the French part of the Basque Country (Behe Nafarroa, Lapurdi and Zuberoa).Harri takes some of its more significant features from those engraved letter forms, but also from the current overemphasized shapes derived from them, while keeping in sight their antecessors: the Romanesque inscriptions and ultimately the Roman Capitals. Gerard Unger once said “the black version of a font is a caricature of the regular”. This may explain how the odd heavy shapes in use in the Basque Country today might have evolved from their engraved roots, which are already an interpretation of Romanesque and Roman letter forms. This evolution is echoed in Harri through its weights, from the clean formal Roman-inspired light to the extreme expressive Basque-style extra bold.

Geometrical drawing of Fenomen Sans typeface goes back to the roots of the Bauhaus aesthetics and the entire architectural and design avant-garde of the 20th century. Since the beginning, “Histories” has been inspired by the shape of the letters displayed on the cover of fairy tale books or animated film covers. Likewise with the naming of the font "Histories" so that the message of the letters is conveyed. And this stylistic combination should also be reflected in the lowercase set which also allows to open up a spectrum of possible uses. Basic calligraphy represents a solid basis for the development of lowercase glyphs, ensuring proper interaction with uppercase letters. “Histories” features multiple ligatures that combine the playerful structure with a more attractive feel. Here is an extremely efficient and uncluttered typeface that you can use in a variety of situations. Memorandum’s orderly and methodical nature makes it a natural for long blocks of text, for captions, or for corporate slogans. Even the original founder, Barnhart Bros. & Spindler, thought this was a freaky font, and indeed they called it "Freak" when they introduced it in 1889. It was reintroduced in 1925 under the somewhat more elegant name of "Bamboo," and is one of the prizes that the collectors of antique metal types seek.

Embossanova was initially sketched to be a monospaced typeface but quickly took on a life of its own. It developed serifs and numerous arcs and stroke weights. I wanted it to retain a pre computer/unmathematical feel so there is a slight variation on curved characters and their relationship to the X height.

Boller is based on handwriting found on the blueprints for the Jayhawk Theater in Kansas. Thomas Williams & Boller Bros. Architects are the only names found on the blueprints. The famous French poet and novelist Victor Hugo (1802-1885) used several handwriting styles, sometimes almost illegible. His manuscripts designated to be published was written using a script style, to be legible clearly. We have used script style manuscripts from the final part of his life (from 1859 to 1881) to reconstruct this present font, as one exemple of the Victor Hugo's hands. It is a "Pro" font containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. The numerous alternates and ligatures allow the font to look as close as possible to a real hand. Book Jacket is arguably the most famous of all typefaces done in the Typositor era. Designed by Ursula Suess over an entire year, and published in 1972, Book Jacket became an instant success story that lasted well into the 1980s (even though it was copied by Phil Martin who published it under the name Bagatelle shortly after its release). Almost 40 years later, Ursula Suess and Canada Type consolidate their talents to bring you a revised, improved and expanded digital version of this film type classic, including small caps, additional swashes and new alternative forms. A friend once jokingly told me that what I really do is mine extinct arts for parts to use in modern things, like going to the scrapyard to pick up bumpers, quarter-panels and dashboards off of Datsuns and Ponies to build a shiny new Ferrari. I still kind of grin at that, but I certainly do spend a lot of time looking at old things and imagining ways they would work today. This shiny new Ferrari here is called Bibliophile, and it contains scrap heap parts from various pages by Louis Prang, the Prussian-American printer and publisher who inspired my Prangs fonts. This is my second engagement with the late 19th century man, and it’s quite a bit more intricate than just an italic Didone with a connected lowercase. Bibliophile marries Round Hand calligraphy with Italian capitals, two styles not often relayed in the same alphabet, but work together beautifully when combined well. When you combine them well with a few long-practised tricks of the trade, then mix in a few trusted features from my previous work over the years, you get my usual crazy exuberance, like 17 different shapes for the d, 21 different forms for the y, endings, beginnings, swashes, ornaments, and so on.
