ITC Astro is the typeface that proves you can get your work done while watching cartoons. “It all started as a series of doodles while I was watching The Jetsons,” recalls Sasa Petricic. “The show's impossibly simplistic vision of the twenty-first century cried out for a font that fit into that world -- a world where everyday objects can carry far more fun and personality than they should.” ITC Astro is the first commercial typeface design from Petricic, whose “day job” is working as a reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Petricic has filed stories from across Canada and around the world for CBC's flagship evening newscast, The National. His reports have also appeared on CNN and BBC Television. Petricic's work as a correspondent and video journalist have taken him to six continents, covering everything from famine and genocide in Africa to the war in Iraq. With such serious matters filling the hours of Petricic's day as a journalist, it's not hard to see why he conceived Astro as a welcome blast of whimsy. “As I began to draw the design,” he says, “I decided that every part of Astro should be a cartoon character unto itself.” Each character has its own baseline shadow (or coaster, or circular antigravity generator, depending on how you look at things). The angular caps dance jauntily, rocking from left to right, while a suite of companion small caps provide backup. Bookseller Bk is a typeface designed for books and legible text at a small sizes, with an old book feeling. This typeface is the reinterpretation of a sample found in a French book, published between 1882 and 1893 and its author —Ernest Michel— lived between 1837 and 1896. This sample has influence from Didot, Scotch Roman and Clarendon (typefaces which were in use at that time). This reinterpretation expands the basic set for the contemporary era. Bookseller Bk includes small caps, old style figures, lining figures, fractions and basic Cyrillic alphabet. Everything in 3 different optical widths. You can save some lines with Reduced weight or fill some lines with Ample weight. All of them with italics, bold and bold italics. Corsica is an all-purpose geometric sans-serif typeface of visually uniform stroke thickness. The design seeks to be reminiscent of classic 20th Century grotesques with a crisp modern appearance and opentype features that are now expected. Coverage includes most Roman languages, Greek and basic Cyrillic. Each font contains a standard set of features including fractions, small capitals etc. The family contains six weights, two widths and three lowercase size options, together with an italic variant for each. The are three standard 4-font families for each size variant and a further three corresponding families for Condensed versions. The versatility provided by this extensive family has many useful applications. In particular, the choice of small, medium and large lowercase letter sizes (SX, MX, LX) allows designers to select an appropriate style for suitable impact and legibility in different situations such as headlines, captions, signage, web menus etc. Although each of the three size options will work equally well in most situations, the middle size (Corsica MX) would generally be the preferred choice for lengthy texts.

The thing is that many sans-serif typefaces are usually intended for universal usage. But sometimes faces that work fine in body text look not so good in large point sizes for display purposes when all the contrast in non-contrast sans-serif, or ink traps, become visible to the naked eye. Every designer solves this problem in his own way. We offer a drastic solution in our Stem: a sans-serif with optical sizing. The first part of the type family, Stem Display, is for use in largest point sizes, from 36 pt indefinitely. Stem Display consists of 12 faces of widths from Hairline to Bold, and it has true italics. The development of Stem type family will include Stem Text for body text and “traditional”, universal use, and Stem Caption for small point sizes. Stem is a geometric sans-serif with semi-closed aperture, large x-height and modern proportions of uppercase letters, like in famous Avenir and Gotham. Its important feature is a professionally designed and carefully tested Cyrillic glyph set.

Of all student work produced in Joost Schmidt?s Bauhaus classes, Reinhold Rossig?s (1903?1979) alphabet designs are perhaps closest to his master?s teachings: monolinear, geometric lettering, constructed on grids using compass and ruler. Drafts by Rossig, dated 1929, also demonstrate explorations of letterform width and x-height. Almost ninety years later, Elia Preuss carefully preserves Rossig?s letters and considerations in a proper typeface, by overcoming most of the optical mistakes captured in true geometric letterforms.
