Satampra evokes the spirit of Arabic calligraphy with a hint of something strange and magical. It is an unusual calligraphic font based on an obscure hand lettered style with unique overlapping character strokes. Cowhand is a display typeface designed by Toshi Omagari to keep words at one specific width. Words of one letter will have one very wide character, words of two letters will have characters of half that width and so forth. At the maximum of 20-letter words, characters become very tightly compressed. The design of the Cowhand typeface is inspired by western style block printing with reverse stress that is characterised by chunky slab serifs. This Lite version of the typeface was designed as part of a font marathon over the course of 3.5 days in Monotype’s NY office. When Aldo Novarese designed his “tipo inglese” Juliet typeface, he had a simple objective in mind: Reduce the inclination angle of the traditional 18th and 19th centuries English script in order to make the punchcutter’s job easier and the resulting metal type more durable. But when Juliet was released by Nebiolo in 1955, it was a big surprise to both typesetters and calligraphers all over Europe. Novarese’s idea of working the standard copperplate script within the limited technology of the time proved to be a marvel in optical metal sizing (Juliet was available in sizes ranging from 12 to 60 pt), but also opened the door to new calligraphic possibilities. Easier readability and a very friendly color were obvious side effects of the reduced angle. So soon after its release, calligraphers worldwide began emulating the angle reduction and experimenting with the application of the same concept to other calligraphic genres. Today, more than 50 years later, many professional calligraphers point to Novarese’s Juliet as an opening to fresh ideas and new directions in 20th century elegant calligraphy. Ambassador Script, this digital version of Aldo Novarese’s surprising masterpiece, is the result of more than a thousand hours of work. Going above and beyond its duty as a revival, it was expanded by a great number of alternates, swashes, beginning and ending forms, as well as accompanying flourishes and snap-on strokes for even more ending forms. Fulgora is a sort of ‘calligraphic typography’ or ‘typographic calligraphy’, depending on the point of view. Inspired by late-medieval Bâtarde and Civilité blackletter styles, the Kannada and Sinhala writing systems from Southern India, Celtic uncials, and diverse vernacular Mexican scripts, Fulgora was created straight from pen on paper as a personal calligraphic style where fantasy in the chief ingredient. The idea to take it to the digital realm came later, as an extension of the creative process. To this end, originals for each character were made, directly traced with the nib with no retouching, then vectorized to be digitally assembled. Work has been done on spacing and kerning with the aim to digitally reproduce an utterly calligraphic outcome keeping the natural, imperfect, manual finish of all signs. Fulgora has two variants: Blanca (white) and Negra (black), executed with different nib widths but the same style and proportions.

ITC Tiepolo font is from the design team at AlphaOmega Typography and named after Italian artist Dominic Tiepolo. The designers describe it as a sans serif with serifs" and it has also been referred to as a calligraphic design. Similar to Asian calligraphy, ITC Tiepolo font has personality yet does not detract from the text."

Matchmaker, a modern calligraphy typeface, was inspired by the various works of modern day calligraphers. Its tall, quirky, and juxtaposed letterforms provide a deviation from traditional calligraphy-inspired typefaces. Matchmaker features smart contextual alternates and swashes that add to the front and beginnings of letters (using lowercase letters, enter === before the word then +++ after the word to see the feature in action). Karolina is a calligraphic serif font. It is inspired by Edward Johnstons (1872–1944) calligraphy and the foundational hand (which was based on the carolingian letters and therefore the name Karolina). The Uppercase letters are based on the perfect proportioned roman capitals. Karolina is a classic and clean typeface with smooth shapes that will give an elegant touch to your projects. It is suitable for formal use and works well both for headlines and as body text in smaller sizes.

Fado is a calligraphic typeface based on the broad nib calligraphy. It has a lot of alternates, ligatures, initial and final forms. The font has 3 sets of length and complexity of ascenders and descenders. It allows the user to chose the style: simple, with more complicated forms, with a lot of flourishes, and even mix all 3 styles.

Carinthia is derived from the style of Roman calligraphy known as Rustica, but with some features of Roman uncial added to form a complete upper and lower case character set, including variant upper case characters with decorative spurs. The result is a rather vertical, but quite stylish font which has an antique calligraphic look and good readability.

Ayrton Pight is a calligraphic font that comes with beautiful characters, a type of modern hand-rubbed calligraphy script, designed with high detail to bring stylish elegance. Fairground was created by calligrapher Rachel Yallop using a vintage nib and ink. This gives it a light flourishing feel, combining the formal penmanship of calligraphy with something a little more informal at the same time. It’s a delicate font with a full range of upper and lowercase alternate characters. Oh, and it has ligatures too!

Dorset marks Léon Hugues first script typeface and first release with the Positype Flourish label. Built crosscurrent to a strict revival or calligraphic digitization, Dorset’s aim was to understand how a font could interact with various calligraphic influences in a single execution and how that interpretation by Léon would lead to new, exclusive design choices. The design purposely chose to connect various gestures from Spencerian handwriting and copperplate calligraphy and meld that with his initial experiments with fine, flat nibs. The result is wholly unique and useful when clear, open, and legible script typography is desired. OpenType features included in this typeface allow the user to seamlessly move from an italic to connected script, while the various stylistic sets can lead you to variations of texture and rhythm, allowing for a more personal and exact expression.

A personal calligraphic series commissioned by Bitstream from Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. Although Carmina BT is a neutral design, optimized for use in digital publishing, Zapf von Hesse’s unique calligraphic spirit is still quite visible in the family’s letterforms. This is not surprising, as all of Zapf von Hesse’s typefaces are calligraphic in nature. Yet Carmina BT is suitable for almost any conceivable digital text application, from book design up through signage use.

There are a few professions in which being left-handed confers an advantage-think of the great southpaw pitchers in major league baseball, like Sandy Koufax. Now, think of all the great left-handed calligraphers. Not so easy, right? Here's a hint: Luis Siquot. Far from being an advantage, Siquot's lefty orientation proved a hurdle to overcome. When I was young, I had serious problems writing," he recalls. "If there was a lot of text, I almost always soiled the paper with wet ink as my hand followed the pen." Then, a friend told Siquot about a special store in London that catered to left-handed people. It was there that he found an Osmiroid pen specially designed for left-handed calligraphers. ITC Cali is based on Siquot's use of this pen. "Electronic scans of my calligraphy were the foundation of the design," he says. "I was careful to leave in some imperfections to avoid an excessively mechanical look, and added the little notches in the strokes to imitate the texture of writing on a rough cotton paper." ITC Cali works equally well in text and display sizes, but it is a calligraphic script, Siquot warns, "and shouldn't be set in all capitals." That said, ITC Cali is a remarkably versatile design, well-suited to a variety of communication projects."

The Scriptorium got its start in the early days of personal computers with a few font designs for the Commodore 64, and the very first font which we did back then in the early 1980s was a gothic calligraphy font. That style of fonts - the medieval, gothic and black letter genre - has always been the backbone of our collection, but with recent releases we've stayed away from them to introduce a bit more variety. Well, with our new Zauberer font the antique, medieval and gothic look is back with a vengeance. Zauberer isn't a true medieval calligraphy style. It's based on early printed type from Germany which combines calligraphic elements with decorative embellishments from the woodcut printing era. The result is decorative and antique looking and rather appealing. The name comes from the German word for a magician or illusionist.
