Some unusual hand lettering was found on the cover of the 1924 edition of a Spanish language novel by Joaquin Belda entitled “La Hora del Abandono” ("The Time of Abandonment"). The title was created as all lower case characters in a semi-serif style reflecting the dawn of the Art Deco movement. Glitzy is a caps-only font with extreme contrast. It was inspired by Art Deco typefaces, especially Broadway by Morris Fuller Benton, but Glitzy is not an attempt to reproduce that typeface. Designed over three years after the second World War, and published in 1949 by the Nebiolo foundry, Normandia was Alessandro Butti’s take on the fat face. As it usually was with Butti’s designs, this face effectively injected a catchy yet expertly calculated calligraphic spin into its source of inspiration — which was the essentially geometric/deco, thicker model of Bodoni’s very popular aesthetic. The metal Normandia saw some widespread use for a handful of years after its publication, not least because of the multitude of sizes in which it was available. It stepped out of the limelight by the mid-1950s, due to a combination of the popularity of cold type and Nebiolo’s refusal to retool its faces for new technologies. It was copied by a few small film typesetting outfits on both sides of the Atlantic, but never really found its way back to the mainstream. By the time computer type became the norm, Normandia was pretty much relegated to a type historian’s collection of anecdotes. This digital update of the classic series revives and refines the three original metal designs (Tonda/Regular, Corsiva/Italic, and Contornata/Outline) and expands the character set to more than 600 glyphs per font, including small caps, six types of figures, fractions and nut fractions, a full set of f-ligatures, some stylistic alternates, and other fine typography niceties.

HWT Konop is a monospaced (fixed-width) typeface that is also square! Designed by Mark Simonson (Proxima Nova) as square characters that can be arranged vertically or horizontally and in any orientation. To a traditional letterpress job printer, a font like this wouldn’t make much sense. But to a modern letterpress printer it is an unusual and creative design toolkit. The bold gothic style is reminiscent of gothic wood types but more geometric. Since the characters are meant to be used in any orientation, the usual optical adjustments, such as making verticals thicker than horizontals and making tops smaller than bottoms are set aside. This results in a quirky but charming design. To provide more design options, Simonson came up with a modular system consisting of three sizes: 12-line, 8-line, and 6-line. These three sizes can be used together like Lego® bricks, with endless arrangements possible. And the sidebearing match so that characters always align when different sizes are used together. Where most typefaces are designed by just one individual, quite a few people have been involved in perfecting Cheltenham over the times. In 1896, the architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue created the initial design for Ingalls Kimball at the Cheltenham Press. Just a few years later, Morris Fuller Benton devised a full family of Cheltenhams for ATF. This is the basis of the design we have today. In 1975, Tony Stan revived this classic typeface and did what was customary at the time: increase the x-height and make the Cheltenham family more regular. SoftMaker updated the design yet again in 2012. The result is Cheltenham Pro, a typeface that is exceptionally readable and holds up even in adverse printing conditions.
