Umkhonto is the Zulu word for SPEAR, the traditional weapon of war that the Zulus used. The sharp points of the letters face upwards and represent the sharp points of the dangerous spears. The font includes a full 256 character set: all upper and lower case letters, as well as all numerals and punctuation. It also includes the most commonly used characters used in non-English European languages such as Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. The numerals are mono-spaced so that they will line up correctly in columns of figures. The letters of the alphabet are spaced according to their width and are carefully kerned.

It's however a slanted mono-spaced looking typewriter font. Alpineo is a display type family, optical mono linear and a bit squarish in nature. It has a distinct stroke-joint style, which is a prominent feature of its design. It has been designed to be a little eye-catching yet legible. It has clear and distinguishable letterforms, which helps to elaborate and emphasis the message. It is graphically strong and command viewer’s attention. The overall appearance of type is suitable in setting it as logotype, punchline, title, headline, etc. The type family consists of six weights viz. Thin, ExLight, Light, Regular, Medium and Bold. Bill Rigney, an old job printer in my home town, established his shop in 1896, closed it in 1900 to take a steady job, stored the equipment in a large shed, and reopened for business upon his retirement in 1950. What a find! A bonanza of old type! We became good friends and upon his death I bought the type. Bless you Bill.

Sheet music for a selection from the 1928 musical “New Moon” had the show’s title hand lettered in a bold sans serif that reflected the upcoming Art Deco movement, along with a contoured outline around the letters. This served as the model for Poster Contoured JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Irish monk Columbanus founded early monasteries across Western Europe starting in the Sixth Century, bringing literacy in his wake. As the Patron Saint of Motorcyclists, the adventurous Columbanus is both gallant and respected. The font is Classical Roman with a Celtic accent, great for a range of applications from the sacred to the profane.

ITC Beesknees font is the work of David Farey. He credits a number of sources as inspirations for his work, including Pushpin Studio, Peter Max, Bob Zoell and the Marx Brothers, whose typographic titles he admired as much as their cinematic humor. He was going to name the font 'Horse Feathers' or 'Monkey Business' after Marx Brothers films, then the name got shortened to 'Business', which then got transformed to 'Beesknees'. ITC Beesknees font contains a capital and small caps alphabet.

The highest and windiest mountain of Provençe is the Mont Ventoux. That is where I saw a pretty windy signpost in a very windy typeface that inspired me to design Ventoux. Lunisolar, according to the dictionary, means “of or caused by both the sun and the moon”. I liked the name, therefore I used it! Lunisolar is quite an interesting font: it is fat(tish) and rough, very neat and legible. It could be used for product packaging, book covers and starships. Comes with an abundance of diacritics.

ITC Serengeti is a font of narrow, high reaching capital letters designed by Bob Alonso in 1996. In the form of small caps, the letters combine to make words. This font is at the same time modern and nostalgic, with letters like N and M being reminiscent of those on posters in the 1920s. One can also interpret this small caps alphabet as one influenced by the Jugendstil. ITC Serengeti should be used only for headlines and display in point sizes of 18 or larger.

Magazin ST is powerful but delicate. What fascinated me seeing, a couple of letters, in Bob Roy Kelly's book (American Wood Type:1828-1900) were the little squares in the corners that represent a glow from lighting coming from below and from the right. Such ambiguity excited me and I thought that today with digital resources it wouldn't take long to do it. Seeing it working is excellent. Look In the posters what it is for and the effects it produces, including the sensation of relief.- L.S.
