Introducing Maas, a new font collection designed by the passionate designer Mike Zuidgeest in Rotterdam. Each letter of the font was created in Illustrator and handcrafted to perfection. Composed, clean and slightly angular, as its name says. It's organic, warm and round in the right places too. A sanserif typeface family Vinkel is a handsome androgyne with an excellent balance of Neo-grotesque and Humanist DNA. A hand-rendered advertisement for a leather tanner, appearing in a French book from the ’40s, served as inspiration for MVB Bovine. Using its comic sway and slightly exaggerated forms, the typeface delivers bold headlines with a wink and a smile. MVB Bovine is all-caps with a set of discretionary ligatures. Letters that occur more often for example vowels have two or more different versions stored in the font. (➶ Figure 4) These alternative forms are exchanged automatically by the font as you type, and create a vivid look that comes close to actual handwriting. The font avoids that two identical letters are placed next to each other like, for example the two “o” in the word “look”. ➸ What Historic Sources is the Font based on? Two historic documents were used to base the font on. The notes Luther took before giving his speech in Worms in 1521 and a 6 page letter he wrote immediately after to Emperor Charles V., summarising his speech (➶ Figure 2). Both documents have been added to the UNESCO “Memory of the World” and can be seen at the Google Arts and Culture website. ➸ The Creation of a Handwriting Font The creation of a handwriting font is very different from the creation of a regular font. Harald Geisler has specialised in recreating handwriting in preceding projects with Albert Einstein’s, Sigmund Freud’s and his own handwriting. His experience working with Archives and Museums has gone into this project. First Geisler analyses the movement in the writing to understand how each letter is drawn. This involves partially learning how to write like a person. In this process not the outlines of the sample are reproduced but the original movement path of the handwriting (➶ Figure 3). In a second step width and contrast is added to reproduce Martin Luther’s characteristic impetus and the writing tools used at the time. Some Glyphs can not be found in 500 year old manuscripts, for example the @-sign. Towards the end of the creation one collects a profund amount of details about how a writer moves on paper and addresses certain tasks moving the pen. Keeping this knowledge in mind an improvisation can be based on similar letter forms. Fragment Pro Inline is a part of a larger OpenType font family (see also Fragment Pro). It is an elegant, soft and decorative typeface built on classical proportions. Its outlines have been carefuly crafted with a high attention to detail, so it could be used even at very large sizes. Fragment is a layered typeface – you can either use the standalone version of Fragment Inline or combine its two layers (Lit and Shadow) to achieve various color effects. It is not recommended to use “inline” layers separately. Instead, choose the separately sold Fragment Pro, which has been significantly optimized for standalone use. I recently walked part of the South West Coast Path in the UK. A couple of days in the hike, I came across a small cafe and I decided to have an oat latte (I am lactose intolerant). Since it was early in the morning, the breakfast menu was out and one of the items I noticed was ‘Overnight Oats’. I normally cook my oats with some lactose free milk and water, but apparently you can soak them overnight, add fruit and nuts and eat it like that. I tried it, it’s ok, but I think I prefer the cooked version. Overnight Oats is a bit of an odd font: it is very higgledy piggledy, yet legible and unique. If you want something out of the ordinary, then this may be your font!

The first thought that crosses a type designer’s mind upon seeing a slab serif is: I wonder what it would look if it was serifless. And so, after building Henderson Slab , I followed my instincts and gave it a sans serif companion. Henderson Sans comes in seven weights plus italics, each of which casting an eye on the crafty lettering origins of what is now the ubiquitous mode of corporate communication. This sans serif is a glyph-for-glyph match for Henderson Slab , inheriting pretty much all of its features and quirks, like the wealth of alternates and swashed variants — simple, endearing or otherwise. Henderson Sans is a family of seven weights plus italics, all full of open features and extended Latin language support. (Basic version do not include alternates, swashes, etc).

Yes, finally. This one took the most time and the most restarting. Years went into imagining what Lust Text should look like and how it should structurally behave in order to truly improve upon a setting that includes any of the Lust typefaces. I approached it as much from the side of the type designer, as I did a potential user. The flow, the warmth, the personality needed to be there, but all of the excess had to be removed responsibly. In the process, and in need of inspiration, I looked backward to historical artifacts and precedent. In each early Lust Text approach, the solution was lackluster and/or vanilla and not actually a ‘Lust’ typeface. The exercise was not in vain though. By exploring past examples, I found my footing drawing for media now and how it might be used later—all the while, producing seamless, elegant curves and restrained indulgence (that sounds almost silly to say, but I like it). The Lust Collection is the culmination of 5 years of exploration and development, and I am very excited to share it with everyone. When the original Lust was first conceived in 2010 and released a year and half later, I had planned for a Script and a Sans to accompany it. The Script was released about a year later, but I paused the Sans. The primary reason was the amount of feedback and requests I was receiving for alternate versions, expansions, and ‘hey, have you considered making?’ and so on. I listen to my customers and what they are needing… and besides, I was stalling with the Sans. Like Optima and other earlier high-contrast sans, they are difficult to deliver responsibly without suffering from ill-conceived excess or timidity. The new Lust Collection aggregates all of that past customer feedback and distills it into 6 separate families, each adhering to the original Lust precept of exercises in indulgence and each based in large part on the original 2010 exemplars produced for Lust. I just hate that it took so long to deliver, but better right, than rushed, I imagine.

English description Karela is a humanist slab serif family. Karela is also the Basque word for gunwale, this is, the widened edge at the top of the side of a boat, where the edge is reinforced with wood or other material and to which the thwarts are attached. Gunwales resemble the way slab serifs reinforce vertical stems giving a more robust appearance to the letters. The sturdy, solid and often mechanical structure that is customary in slab serif or mechanistic typefaces is softened in Karela applying subtle tweaks as: humanist proportions, slightly curved endings in ascenders, and curved edges in serifs. The influence of calligraphy is noticeable all over the character set, especially in counters and letters with instrokes like “m”, “n” and “r”, and it becomes explicit in the italics. On the other hand, its low contrast, generous x-height and the constant width of characters across weights makes it very convenient for editorial uses when low resolution is a concern. Karela pursues to give a human touch to a strong and highly functional structure. It seeks for the ideal combination of strength, precision and warmth of the wooden parts painstackingly handcrafted by ancient boat builders. Besides its 12 standard styles, Karela offers also four additional fonts called "grades". Grades are subtle changes in stroke weight in order to compensate for differences in printing media or display conditions of text layouts. To minimize these subtle changes without a reflow of the text they have to be designed with the same character width of the base style. Karela offers 4 grades for its Regular weight: Grade Minus 5, Grade Minus 5 Italic, Grade Plus 5 and Grade Plus 5 Italic. This makes possible to counteract the effect of changes in paper, temperature, paper, background color… In addition, Karela takes this no‑reflowing idea from grades and extends it to the whole range of styles, allowing to play with any of its weights without undesirable text reflows.
