Unique and decorative signage for many drive-ins, motels, food stores and other businesses of the 1940s had what was referred to as “privilege signs” provided by one of the major cola brands. Consisting of the brand’s emblem on a decorative panel, the remainder of the sign would carry the desired message of the storekeeper (such as “Drive-In”) in prismatic, embossed metal letters. Inspired by the Art Deco sans serif style of those vintage signs, Privilege Sign Two JNL recreates the type design in both regular and oblique versions. The typefaces are solid black, but adding a selected color and a prismatic effect from your favorite graphics program can reproduce the look and feel of those old businesses. The script version of the typeface Viabella introduces us to the calligraphic side of the Berlin type designer and typographer Karl-Heinz Lange. The sketches for this script typeface, which resulted from the close cooperation with Veronika Elsner and Günther Flake, found their roots in sketch drawings which Karl-Heinz Lange had already drawn in the 1980’s. For the Viabella design, Karl-Heinz Lange drew the basic letterforms of the Black and Regular cuts with a brush. He then re-worked the drawings and transferred them on to tracing paper. The design studio Elsner+Flake in Hamburg cut these typeface extensions and later digitized them manually with the help of the IKARUS Sustem. With the Regular cut as a basis, Elsner+Flake extended the family with the Light version and interpolated and re-worked the Medium weight. The completion of the family was taken over by the type designer Björn Gogalla who had done the same kind of work on Rotola, a design which Karl-Heinz Lange had also created for Elsner+Flake. While Viabella was originally conceived as a headline typeface, its lighter weights can certainly be used for shorter text applications. The Black version creates powerful headlines with highly effective accents. With the help of swashes, which are available for all weights, the user can lighten up longer texts and add special character to titles. In contrast to pure headline fonts, Viabella has been enriched by an extensive complement of special characters. Burlesk Queen JNL was inspired by the hand lettered title “Gypsy” on the sheet music for "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from the movie musical based on the autobiography of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. With just four basic letters to work with [G,Y,P and S], a full character set was drawn from scratch. The design features bold spur serif characters on individual ‘marquees’ bordered with lights. Burlesk Queen One JNL is the original version with white characters on black panels, while Burlesk Queen Two JNL has those panels stripped away to provide black letters on a white background.

Aladdin Black is the 3rd member of our Aladdin Bold Font Family. This new style is extra bold and slightly rounded on the outsides of the glyphs. It is fat, fancy, fearless, forward, devilish, heavy, and stylized. Aladdin Bold was my first font introduced in 2012. I've always felt there were possibilities of adding styles to this family and something triggered the decision, so...here it is. In the basic version of the typeface, all glyphs have simple chopped shapes, created according to the usual geometric principles. In the alternative version of TT Tunnels, which becomes available when you turn on OpenType feature stylistic alternates or stylistic set 1, the typeface comes to life and turns into a stylized ductal gothic grotesque, in which the design of glyph forms is created based on the pen movements. Despite the fact that TT Tunnels was created as a display typeface for use in short inscriptions and titles, it works very interestingly in the body text, adding a small touch of archaics. This is especially evident in the Bold and Black faces, when the rhythm and thickness of the strokes create a dense set, covering the paper with a solid, dense pattern. The density and style of such a set conceptually refers us to the old Gothic texture and the Old Slavonic script. Capraia is a book typeface, with a heavily quirky look when shown at big sizes, and with an irregular but attractive rhythm at text sizes. Capraia Book and Regular are designed specifically for continuous texts: Book meets a current preference of Italian publishers for lighter faces, while the slightly heavier Regular is intended for the wider international market. True to its vocation for publishing, Capraia has a big x-height, medium contrast and wide bracketed serifs.
