Spirited, unaffected and buoyant, the ITC Oldrichium type family pays homage to the calligraphy and typeface designs of Czech designer Oldrich Menhart. “I came upon one of Menhart's typefaces over a decade ago,” says George Thompson, designer of ITC Oldrichium. “I've been collecting examples of his work ever since.” Thompson was born in Chicago and grew up in north-west Indiana. “While I've been an educator and general graphic designer for over 30 years, lettering and type design have always been an important part of my work,” he says. When type historians look back on Jim Rimmer, they will consider him the last type designer who just couldn't let go of metal type, even though he was just as proficient in digital type. Lancelot is one definite case in point: A face designed and produced in digital as late in the game as 1999, only to spring onto the new millenium a couple of years later as a metal type cast in three sizes. That was Jim, a time traveler constantly reminding the craft of its origins. This particular time machine was originally designed as a simple set of attractive caps that emphasize the beauty of the variable conventional dialogue between the drawing tool and the intended final form, and the one exchanged within the totality of the forms themselves. Jim designed two weights, with contrast and counterspace being the main difference between them. In 2013, the Lancelot family was remastered and greatly expanded. Lancelot Pro is now a wonder of over 840 glyphs per font, including smaller versions of the caps in the minuscule slots, and alternates and ligatures that can transform the historic spirit of the original design into anything from half-uncial to outright gothic. Aristotelica Pro is the 2020 redesign of the rounded geometric sans designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli developing the original philosophy of one of the classic and best-selling Zetafonts typefaces, Arista by Francesco Canovaro. Originally conceived as an exercise in restraint and simplicity, Aristotelica is typographic eulogy to the simple beauty of circular shapes, aptly named after the greek philosopher who pioneered formal logic. It shows its strengths mostly in display uses and logo design, with a palette of moods ranging from the stark elegance of the uppercase hairline weights to the playful softness of the lowercase bold weights. True to its universalist calling, it has however been developed in a variant text version that applies slight corrections to design and metrics to allow for better legibility in long body copy. In Aristotelica Pro both the display and the text subfamilies have been complemented with a condensed version, though especially for mobile screens and other situations where space-saving is a concern. Also the original language coverage (extended latin, greek and cyrillic) has been expanded with the inclusion of arabic language glyphs, bringing the typeface to a total of over 1100 glyphs and 200 languages covered. The family is further enriched by the inclusion of Aristotelica Icons, a set of matching variable-width monoline icons that can be used to faultlessly match the typeface line width. Tambau is a display typeface crafted by Matheus “Fio” Gonçalves, a Brazilian design student, still in college, inspired by Brazilian concert urban posters and wood type that I saw at the Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo. The font was first made for a magazine project in design school, making it beautiful on giant pages headlines, billboards, signs, etc. There’s no lowercase, the character set is dramatic and objective. The uppercase is actually expanded letterforms causing some eyes and breathing paths to the very condensed and very modular glyphs, which creates a quite interesting striped texture between form, counterform and spacing. The lots of ligatures come to give it more closure between the letters, when they try to form blank spaces. So do the diacritics, fitting in the space given to them by the dynamic letterforms, making dense rectangular blocks. You may use Tambau as big as you can or do a high tracking to it and still it will be pretty. The titles can be dynamic, just condensed or just large. It’s on your own. Don’t be afraid to play with Tambau, it’s an alive typography. Curiosity: For the magazine in design school, the pilot project of Tambau was cut in a MDF board, to print it with texture and paint. Later was added more characters, languages and special glyphs to it. Set: Tambau is a singular font typeface, with extended and condensed characters, numbers, ligatures, punctuation and symbols for Basic, Western, Central and South Eastern Latin languages.

Jim Rimmer’s first typeface was originally published in 1970 as a basic film type alphabet through a small, independent type house in central California. Its sources of influence (now calligraphic type standards by Dair, Goudy and Zapf) are ones that remained with Jim for the rest of his career. If you squint at Totemic in just the right way, you can see some recognizable themes Jim would later flesh out and make his own in later works throughout his career as a type designer and printer. Totemic is now available for the first time as a digital font, of the refined and expanded kind now expected from Canada Type. Our Bazaruto family was inspired by an old fashioned specimen from “Letters and Lettering” by Carlyle & Oring, but you'll find the inspiration has been greatly expounded upon. What began as an all Capitals specimen has been fleshed out to an extended full character set with many features and variants from the original design. Bazaruto has been an exercise in typographic evolution. The original Art Deco style spawned an Engraved version, then a Bodoni-esque text style, and then a monoline version of that text style (both of the latter complete with Obliques). But after that is when the real interpretations of form began with the development of the Iron fonts, playing off the original specimen having a visual flavor of wrought ironwork in them, and blending that into the Bodoni-esque typestyles.
