Lately I have been experimenting with different foods. At home, we eat a lot of Asian food, but I thought it would be nice to broaden my culinary horizon a bit. So far I have (successfully) added Georgian beef and walnut soup, Tacos (after a suggestion by my friend Stuart), Surinam Roti and various vegetarian dishes to our menu. When I created this font, I had to think of Gumbo - a dish I have never made. Gumbo is a handmade display font that comes in a rotund regular and an obese bold (with Italics). Use it for your book covers, product packaging and sticky notes. Gumbo comes with cute ‘end of word’ ligatures - just type the glyph + space and presto: you have a little swash. My pet peeve for many years has been with the 'rn' in small texts, especially with my smart phone. I felt that perhaps others may have the same peeve. I decided to try and fix that with Atlantica. As you can see in poster No. 4. "With the combination of 'rn' in small text it tends to appear as 'm'. Therefore it may be read as 's t e m' instead of 's t e r n'. Altalntica has an alternate 'rn'. By invoking the < Contextual-Alternate > feature. Atlantica will replace each 'rn' - or you may individually change them if you desire". Also note the deep cuts to help legibility for smaller texts. This combination apparently does not appear in many words, but when it does it can suggest a different word as in; eastern, stern, tarnish, Tornado, Turn and in some names as well.

At VetteLetters we like food but we also appreciate our drinks. Yes, of the non-alcoholic kind as well. Like milk. Contrary to what Arnold Schwartzenegger once said, Milk is not just for babies. It contains a whole lot of stuff that is genuinely good for you. Like proteins, carbohydrates, minerals (calcium a.o.) and many vitamins. One time visiting The Hague, Donald DBXL spotted a tile tableau on a brick wall, advertising a dairy factory called ‘De Sierkan’. Yellow sans serif letters on a bright blue background, dating back to the late 19th century, immediately grabbed DBXL’s attention. Especially because the tableau showed both regular and bold letters with some lovely peculiarities here and there. De Sierkan appeared to have been a milk factory solely operating in The Hague from 1879 until 1961. A number of these wall adverts are still to be seen in The Hague streets today. Photos were taken for later reference. Later is now, the lettering has been digitized, missing characters added, and VLNL Melk sees the light of day. VLNL Melk is an all-caps geometric display sans serif family of three weights, Regular, Bold and Black. The basic shape of the letters is a rectangle with rounded corners, leaving a sturdy no-nonsense look and feel. It has a distinct historic aura, but with both feet in this digital day and age. It can equally well be used for the logo of a hipster coffee place, as the cover of a historic novel. Actually, VLNL Melk kan be applied in a wide range of designs like logos, posters, flyers, book covers and magazine headlines.

French Typewriter is a slab serif typeface created in 2019 by Jean-Renaud Cuaz. It takes roots in the typewriting font styles with a French flair. In the history of this font style, early typewriters were initially thought to be replacements for printing and so featured proportional fonts, before being replaced by monospaced typefaces. French Typewriter was created with proportional design, departing from the constraint of identical width and space. Designed for vintage and modern use with a script influenced italic, French Typewriter provides a large range of weights from Extra Light to Black with matching italics offering a large palette of styles for both vintage and modern design. As an original design, Quanta draws on principles of letterform developed during my studies of lettercarving (in Wales with Ieuan Rees) and Roman proportion. My intention was to produce a highly legible and adaptable sans-serif, initially intended to be a TrueType GX font, then as a Multiple Master font, later as a five weight range from extremely thin to extra black. This font is inspired by the samples of the booklet "Caligrafía inglesa" published in Madrid in the late nineteenth century by the spanish calligrapher Vicente Fernández Valliciergo. Hundred of new glyphs have been added, taking advantage of Opentype features. Ligatures, decorative figures, initials and final forms, inspired in the samples of English Calligraphy as shown in "The universal penman" by George Bickham have been added to the font. Aramus is a new serif font in my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. In many ways, Aramus is a very different direction for me. It comes from a scan of an old display face that has been radically modified to a much smaller x-height than I have been using lately, plus taller ascenders. Many of the characters needed a lot of correction to bring them into my taste. In general, I have decided that many of my fonts create a type color that is too dense. Aramus is an attempt to get away from that look. Although Amitale has been a very successful book family and excellent to work with, I find I still need something more open with a lighter color. Aramus is the first look at the new direction. The original hand-cut serifs vary a lot, different for almost every character. This gives a little looseness and helps the lightness I am looking for. It will be interesting to see where this all goes. This is a normal serif for me in that it has caps, lowercase, small caps with the appropriate figures for each case. This font has all the OpenType features in the set for 2009. I didn't bother with the CE accents (though I can add them upon request. They will be in the final new book family). There are several ligatures for your fun and enjoyment: bb gg ff fi fl ffi ffl ffy fj ft tt ty Wh Th and more. Like all of my fonts, there are: caps, lowercase, small caps, proportional lining figures, proportional oldstyle figures, & small cap figures, plus numerators, denominators, superiors, inferiors, and a complete set of ordinals 1st through infinity.
