The name of this font brings back memories of an old fried chicken restaurant in Willow Springs Illinois circa 1960’s and 1970’s, my family would all get in the car and take a long drive down to an old country road Illionis Rt 171 through a forest preserve where we’d come upon the old Willowbrook motel with a bar and restaurant next door. The restaurant was called Kegal’s, when you entered the building you had to walk through the smoky bar first to get to the restaurant, I can still see the hard wood floors with all the finish worn off from decades of foot traffic. Up until the mid 1960’s Kegal’s used to raise their own chickens behind the restaurant, back then fried chicken in the Midwest was either coated in flour or bread crumbs, Kegal’s was covered in a beautiful layer of golden bread crumbs. Before your meal arrived they’d bring a basket of dinner rolls along with crackers, bread sticks and country butter, on the side they’d serve coleslaw with a vinegar sauce, which is very common in the Midwest, the first time you try it your face puckers up like you just sucked on a lemon but you get used it over time. After waiting for what seemed like forever to a child the waitress comes out of the kitchen with a huge tray of that golden deliciousness and your mouth begins to water, in her other hand was another tray filled to overflowing with crinkle cut french fries all made by hand, I’d eat a hole handful of those french fries first then take a bite of that tender juicy farm raised chicken. Today a fine Italian restaurant occupies the old Kegal’s building and the motel is long gone, only my fond memories remain. Fast forward to 2020 and FontMesa has just made some Fried Chicken as an eight weight type font family with alternates. Haettenschweiler™ is a very condensed, very bold alphabet. Haettenschweiler was derived from a more condensed typeface, called Schmalfette Grotesk, first shown in the early 1960s in a splendid book called Lettera by Walter Haettenschweiler and Armin Haab. Haettenschweiler became popularized by the Paris Match magazine. Use this distinguished face in large sizes for headlines. Laureen zaza is an Arabic typeface that has a very particular appearance. It combines the characteristics of different genres; most notably the contrast of serif faces. While its design is influenced by Kufic and the Naskh style. Laureen zaza consists of two typefaces, text and display, and 4-weights. It’s a perfect choice for bold headlines, oversize typography, fashion logos, branding, identity, website design, album art, covers, posters, advertising, etc.

Library Book Initials JNL was modeled from examples of Sidney Gaunt's Publicity Initials; originally sold in metal type by Barnhart Brothers and Spindler as a companion to the Publicity Gothic typeface. The smoothed-down lines of the original characters allow for these initials to balace better when set against complementary type faces. A regular version is on the upper case keys, with an oblique version on the lower case keys.

From the pages of a small book entitled “A Portfolio of Alphabet Designs for Artists, Architects, Designers & Craftsmen” [Irene K. Ames, 1938] comes a bold Art Deco sans poster display face. The digital version is called Throughway JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. [To note, throughway (or sometimes spelled thruway) is a popular term from the 1950s and 1960s for a major road or highway.]

Conference is a bold, playful sans serif, which was designed in 1978 by Martin Wait. Conference's letters are very curvaceous; many of them bulge lovingly outward from their centers. This typeface offers a different feeling than is available from most contemporary sans serif display faces; Conference is lively, without sacrificing readability. The type should be set in large, display sizes, where the eye can better appreciate its loving forms.

Brollo is a chunky display face full of the spirit of the 60s and 70s. Its bold character makes it ideal for poster work, and for anywhere that the point really needs to be driven home. The letter forms have been designed to work well either used conventionally or exclusively in capitals. We recommend use in combination with strong patterns, psychedelic colours and anything else outrageous you can think of.

Swanville developed as part of a train font that eventually became LetterTrain. The letters of Swanville are bold, have a funny “serif” on the top but not on the bottom, and when the letters have interiors, the interior has the shape of the letter. Lower-case letters are smaller versions of the upper-case letters. Because development of this face stopped long ago, it has a limited character set.

Visigoth font was created in 1988 by Arthur Baker for AlphaOmega Typography. He designed it specifically for setting the text of A Dante Bestiary published in 1989 for Ombondi Editions in New York. Highly expressive and unusual letter shapes make Visigoth unique among script faces: it has bold, pen written lines, a slight incline, and a distinct variation in stroke weights, making it ideal for advertising and other display work.

‘Landsdowne Commercial’ is a development of one of our designer’s earlier public domain releases, ‘Landsdowne’. All glyphs have been completely redrawn and refined. An extensive range of stylistic alternates and ligatures have been added, as well as a completely new bold face and several forms of numerals. Landsdowne commercial is ideal for period-inspired design work, such as posters and book covers as well for clear elegant communications.

Art Party is a hand-drawn font suitable for headlines of all kinds when you want a handmade look. Prissy Pots owner Erin Solomon drew the playful letters, which include regular and bold versions. Following the success of the Ashemore family, it became clear that a rounded version of Ashemore would be a great addition to the product line that would allow designers even more design choices. This is the elaborate digital version of Edel Grotesque Bold Condensed (also known as Lessing, Reichgrotesk, and Wotan Bold Condensed) a 1914 typeface by Johannes Wagner, which was later adopted by pretty much every European type foundry, exported into the Americas, and used on war propaganda posters on either side of the Atlantic. Bold, condensed, yet clear and legible, Wagner Grotesk is good for cramming information into tight spaces. Extended language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European character sets, as well as Greek, Cyrillic, Baltic, Esperanto, Maltese, Turkish, and Celtic/Welsh languages. Biform letters and small caps make Wagner Grotesk a most versatile and functional headline face.

This is not a brush font! This is an imitation of brushstrokes, done by pen. But I guess you've already noticed that - the brushstrokes are way too obvious, to have been made by brush. The Bitstream version of Caslon 540 of the American Type Founders, 1902. Based on William Caslon I's first English Old Style typefaces of 1725. Caslon modeled his designs based on late 17th century Dutch types, but his artistic skills enabled him to improve those models, bringing a variety of forms and subtlety of details. Strokes in Caslon fonts are somewhat heavier than in earlier Old Style fonts, serifs are thicker and a bit stubby. Italic letters have uneven slope. A text set in Caslon looks legible and aesthetically appealing. Caslon is a favorite font of English printers for setting of classical literature. Cyrillic version was developed for ParaType in 2002 by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan.

Traiectum is the old Roman name for the city of Utrecht (in The Netherlands). When I started working on this font, I wanted to give it a Latin name and Traiectum sounded good! Traiectum is a hand drawn font with a regal and messy look. It was based on Goudy Old Style, a classic old-style serif typeface created in 1915 by Frederic W. Goudy. Traiectum is a multilingual, all caps font and I am sure you’ll find lots of uses for it. The city it was named after, Utrecht, is actually very nice! You should visit one day!

Eurydome is one of Jupiter's many moons, and was named after Eurydome, the mother of the Graces in Greek mythology. Eurydome was inspired by the Grotesque face Venus, with an additional flair added to the lowercase a, b, d and g. The 1905 Barnhart Brothers & Spindler catalog featured an ultrawide face called "French Antique Extended". The letterforms have been faithfully rendered here, but this font’s kerning calls for a lot of overlapping and interlocking that the original cast-metal face wouldn't have been able to duplicate. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

The award-winning Scala family (1990-1993) is a worldwide bestseller and has established itself as a ‘classic’ among digital fonts. It was one of the first serious digital text fonts to support small caps, ligatures and different set of numbers. In fact Scala and Scala Sans (1990-1993) are two different typefaces sharing a common form principle: the skeletons of both Scala and Scala Sans are identical. Scala’s dark colour and low contrast works to prevent the thin parts from breaking up. The generous length of Scala italic’s serifs gives it a strong rhythm. Linotype Compendio is a part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of the International Digital Type Design Contests from 1994 and 1997. Christian Bauer designed this font based on the basic forms of Transitional faces of the 17th century. The outer contours of the letters are purposely raw and irregular, much like alphabets printed on low-quality paper. The legibility of the font is thus reduced, making it necessary to use this font only for shorter texts or headlines, but it is exactly this characteristic which lends Linotype Compendio its distinctiveness.
