Ermou is a display monospace font. The typeface has a distinct geometry using sharp angled corners as a tribute to writing and carvings of Ancient Greece. Compass Next is a third edition of Compass TRF designed in 2002. The first time Compass TRF has been conceived was as a “geometric” Didone – all letters literally were drawn with a ruler and a compass. This time, the objective was to bring overall extreme geometrical expression closer to traditional letterform style of its “modern style” typeface category (Didone). The gifted Hungarian punch-cutter and printer Miklós Kis was active in Amsterdam in the 1680s. A Tartufo is a truffle in Italian. I have to admit, I have never eaten one, so I couldn’t really tell you if they’re any good. I suppose they are, but you’ll have to find that out for yourselves! Tartufo font is a bit of a weird font. It was hand made with a rollerball pen on some very expensive French paper. As I was drawing each glyph, I figured I might as well include Cyrillic and Greek. Tartufo is not a text font - I’d use it for packaging, posters, book covers and T-shirts. Comes with a whole bunch of diacritics!

Jobst Gutknecht was a highly successful printer in the city of Nuremburg from 1514 to 1542. He published the "Achtliederbuch" (the first Lutheran hymnal, with a whole 4 tunes) and many works by Martin Luther. This font is an accurate "recutting" of the font face Gutknecht used for the body text in his printed works. It has been extended to over 900 glyphs adding hundreds for modern use. It also presents many ancient things like old ligatures such as "tz", a hedera, and alternate style pilcrow for visual interest. Personally I think a brush font should have the word ‘Brush’ in its name. It’s not that easy finding a name - you need some magic to come up with a good one! Magical Brush is a completely handmade font. I used a small brush (a number 3 to be precise) and Chinese Ink. I wanted just a little ‘erosion’, so I used copier paper rather than my expensive French water color paper (which is quite rough). Magical Brush comes in the normal variant and a chickenpox one. Use it for your posters, your book covers and your Christmas invitations!

Philip Bouwsma makes use of his extensive calligraphy and type design experience by reaching into his vault and completing one of his unfinished projects from the mid-1990s. The result is Styx, a four-font connected-script family, with rough and smooth variations, each containing two sets of majuscules and plenty of alternates sprinkled throughout the character map. Fishmonger originated from a commission of two fonts for the corporate identity of a fishmonger shop. When sketching the elementary principles for the lettering, the idea for a modern, extensive font family with a large number of styles was born. The first step consisted of defining the range of widths and weights. Then the master design Medium Regular was completed. The next step was adjusting the Extra Condensed Thin, the Extra Condensed Bold, The Extra Extended Thin and the Extra Extended Bold weights, as they are the vertices of an imaginary square map of the face. This meant that, in order to achieve a harmonious result, the x and y axis needed to be defined. From top to bottom, from the widest to the most condensed cut, the proportions are linear. However, from light to black, the line curves gently, allowing lesser difference between the light cuts, and a dramatic one between the heavier cuts. To ensure the original parameters were respected each position on the vertex was checked against the Medium Regular. After sorting out the ideal set-up, the remaining characters of each of the weights were drawn, and the remaining cuts were interpolated according to the principles above. Fishmonger is a functional, clean design, free of any buoyant, ornamental shapes, almost minimalist. Maybe this is what lends the type family its unique appearance.

Broadside is a versatile, authoritative and functional family inspired by the sans serifs seen on ’40s and ’50s patriotic posters and period advertising. It is available in seven weights across condensed, normal and extended widths, each with reweighed italics. The type from this period was very often hand-drawn, and so differs considerably from poster to poster. Many American examples of this period use a Photo-Lettering style called Murray Hill and its derivatives, although their UK counterparts, designed by such luminaries as Abram Games or Tom Eckersley, are more stylistically diverse. Even though no single model is available to base a digitisation on, there are certain recurring stylistic quirks that give the type its unique flavour, and so the most interesting examples from several sources were be combined for the final family. Poligon is a large family of geometric sans serif fonts. It is inspired by classic typefaces from the geometric-sans genre, like Futura and Avant Garde Gothic, whose shapes were constructed from circles and straight lines. Every character has been crafted to give it a distinct and individual feel. The family is an excellent choice for both corporate design and editorial design projects because of its range of weights, as well as its legibility in text. The typeface family ships in two different formats. Depending on your preference, you can install the typeface as two Variable Fonts or use the family’s eight static OpenType font files instead. Those weights run from Thin to Black. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the Variable Fonts have vastly greater control over the stroke width in their upright and italic texts. CA Normal is a typeface aiming for beauty without ostensible effects, merely relying on clarity and well balanced proportions. True beauty is not to be found in perfect geometry, so slight irregularities and inconsequences are spread throughout the typographic image. That’s perfection through imperfection. CA Normal merges influences from European grotesques and American gothics, breeding an experimental mongrel. The underlying concept stays in the background, giving the design a great self-evidence. Although it is doubtful if there can be such thing as neutrality, CA Normal comes pretty close to what people mean when speaking of a neutral font. Nevertheless it’s not faceless, anonymous or confound able. It’s just that the charm comes from subtle details rather than obvious design features. As good text typefaces must not be too smooth nor too agitated, CA Normal is smuggling little uneven details into the typographic image, that keep the readers eye awake. The well crafted oblique follows the grotesque tradition which knows no individually drawn italics. A rather unexpected addition is the reverse oblique, a style mainly used for maps. Under the classic surface lies a modern well equipped font, featuring small caps, a Central European character set and numerals in all kinds of flavors. Numerous ligatures round up the overall impression. By default CA Normal will set numbers as proportional lining figures. But if you prefer oldstyle figures, or tabular figures, just use the OpenType functions of your layout program. It was a time when iconic faces such as Futura, Erbar, and Kabel appeared on the scene and turned the world of type upside-down. Inspired by those early giants as well as later epigones with a legacy of their own (such as 1970’s Avant Garde Gothic), Flink is the Identity Letters take on this genre, characterized by a clean and focused appearance.
