Empresario Stephen F. Austin (1793-1836) is considered by many the “Father of Texas” for leading the first Anglo-American colony into the then-Mexican territory back in the 1820s. A few years later, while on a diplomatic mission to Mexico City, Austin was arrested on suspicion of plotting Texas independence and imprisoned for virtually all of 1834. During this time he kept a secret diary of his thoughts and musings—much of it written in Spanish. Austin Pen is my interpretation of Austin’s scribblings in this miniature prison journal (now in the collection of the wonderful Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, in the Texas city that bears his name). The little leather-bound book is filled with notes in ink and pencil—some of the faded penciled pages traced in ink years later by Austin’s nephew Moses Bryan. A genuine replication of 19th century cursive, Austin Pen has two styles: a fine regular weight, along with a bold style that replicates passages written with an over-inked pen. Each is legible and evocative of commonplace American penmanship of two centuries ago.

Edelgotisch is a bold Jugendstil design that shows its strong blackletter roots. This typeface, along with a set of initial letters, was released by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany about 1898 and is very similar to Eckmann-Schrift released by Rudhard'schen Giesserie (later Klingspor) during the same period. One suspects they may have been in direct competition. The decorative devises of the initial letters for Edelgotisch have a simpler, bolder line than for Eckmann. In the initial letter set, the ligatures aesc (AE) and ethel (OE) were generated by embedding the ‘A’ and ‘O’ respectively inside the upper left corner of the ‘E.’ The accented caps were given similar treatment, with the exception of the cedilla. Regarding the I-diaeresis, we considered rotating the accent ninety degrees to avoid and possible misconstruction. On further reflection however, we realized it was silly and unnecessary. No one would look at the accented letterform and see anything but what it is. We have also included four decorative ornaments and a frame with each font.

Vernon’s inspiration came while researching and investigating a 'legible' typeface design for tangible purpose. The main characteristics of ‘Vernon’ can be seen in the slightly modulated strokes that reference the natural and friendly humanist proportions of the humanist hand, with open interior letterspace characteristics. The subtle detailing and finishing of strokes and junctions – seen in the curved tail of the lowercase ‘l’ and the head serif of the lowercase ‘i’, create a smooth rhythm along the baseline. Utilizing the ‘contextual alternative’ feature of OpenType, Vernon substitutes select characters in words with word-shapes that may cause visual confusion to some readers. Vernon uses subtle character differentiation in the detailing of the inner-shape / counter space from similar letter shapes (for example: ‘p’, ‘d’, ‘g’ and ‘q’) to assist in creating the contextual alternate designs. Vernon is recommended for use as a text typeface, as it performs well at small text sizes (12 point size and below) intended for continuous reading of printed instructional and presentational information, especially where an inclusive audience demographic is required.

Centro Slab Press: Specimen Manual PDF Ever since its first release, Centro Slab has been particularly popular with corporate applications, branding and print media. The new Centro Slab Press version was redesigned with narrower proportions which are better suited for publications such as magazines and newspapers as well as web applications. Centro Slab Press is a very clean and legible typeface even at heavier weights, a characteristic which is not often seen among slab typefaces. This is part due to the fact that Centro Slab Press is not overpowered by clumsy serifs. Instead it incorporates semi-slabs which provide comfortable reading without compromising its modern profile. The italics are narrower than the romans and incorporate beautiful cursive characteristics. Each style consists of 659 glyphs with several opentype features and an extended set of characters which support more that 100 languages such as those based on the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabet. Brokve is a Croatian word used along the Dalmatian coast. It means “nails", as in the; hammer and nails, variety. It’s tall thin strokes and jutting points give it a very spike-like appearance; suitable for any uses that are intense, jarring or just plain edgy. The font Marcel is named in honor of Marcel Heuzé, a Frenchman who was conscripted into labor during World War II. During the months Marcel was in Germany, he wrote letters to his beloved wife and daughters back home in rural France.
