Frans Masereel wrote or should I rather say cut some "novels in pictures" around 1927. They are written in powerful black and white woodcuts and were apparently printed from the original cuttings, at least that what it looks like. On the cover he cut the titles in rough wooden letters. This one may look rather strange at a first sight, but it has the true power of coolify written pieces. (Please don’t use it to say “Attorneys’s Conference”, nor “Annual Statement of Accounts”, unless you mean them to be cool, which is very unlikely.) Melodia has 3 glyph drawings for each uppercase letter, 3 more for each lowercase and 2 for the numerals. There are even alternates for punctuation, go figure: there are 3 commas and 3 periods. Surprising. To activate the automatic cycling of all these alternates, simply turn on the Contextual Alternates feature in your application. And it doesn’t hurt to remind: use it only on cool stuff.

“Kamenica” - named after a beautiful small mountain river in Serbia - is a font family containing 3 weights: Light, Regular and Bold. The Kamenica river is only a few meters wide. Mostly shallow and cold, clear and green, it was the direct inspiration source for the creation of this condensed typeface. As our other typefaces, “Kamenica” also combines traditional shapes with modern forms, tall x-height and a collection of more than 300 glyphs. Comparing the river with the font, we could say that letters are the fishes that lives in the Kamenica river and that the font weights are the seasons in which this river shows most of its own character.

Roswell was designed by Jim Parkinson, who acknowledges the 'spacey' ancestry of its name. Yes, Roswell, New Mexico. There was a big anniversary of 'the incident' in the news while I was designing in Roswell. "The incident" is of course the alleged UFO crash in Roswell. "I thought the name was acceptable as a serious font name, while, on another level, having a strangely humorous edge," says Parkinson. Roswell looks great in large sizes on a poster or in a magazine layout. It started out as "a variation on American gothic forms like Railroad Gothic", says the designer, but Roswell is an original design with eccentricities of its own."
