ITC Merss proves that sometimes accidents work out just fine. Late one evening Eduardo Manso, an Argentinean graphic and type designer, spilled coffee on his desk. When he began to wipe up the mess, he noticed that one of the splashes looked like a roman letter 'l' - complete with serifs. This triggered his imagination. “What if a complete alphabet was created with this same irregular flow to the character designs?” ITC Merss was the result of Manso's experiments with “fluid” letter shapes. The oddly handsome design looks aged and spontaneous at the same time. Its irregular texture is striking-the result of careful modeling of character shapes. While Manso wanted to maintain the free-form character of spilled liquid, he also knew the individual letters had to work together with an underlying harmony. When not experimenting with typefaces - or spilled coffee - Manso creates award-winning graphic and publication designs. A contributor to the design magazine el Huevo (the Egg), he also writes articles on type and typography and is part of the publication's design team.

‘Пивная’ (Pivnaya) means ‘bar’ or ‘brewhouse’ in Russian. Pivnaya Latin is a display font published by Roman Type. Initially designed for a poster, the family quickly turned multi-script. In 2019, the global design community is busy celebrating the centennial of Bauhaus, silently triggering the question as to if or how the phenomenon matters in the lives we lead today, or whether it could rather be reduced to mere historic purposes. At that point, I found myself falling into the Bauhaus trap myself, preparing a typeface design workshop for a group of Lithuanian and Russian students. But by a typing error, I accidently made Google translate ‘Brauhaus’ (brewhouse) instead of ‘Bauhaus’. That is why I called this family ‘Pivnaya’ in the end. Pivnaya Latin works for: Afrikaans, Albanian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portugese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanisch, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Zulu. Though being a decorative font, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) increases usability for all kinds of purposes.

Habana Deco ML was inspired by a hand-lettered sign on the stucco exterior of a small pharmacy in modern-day city of Havana, Cuba. It, in turn, was based on the fat-faced Art Deco lettering of the late 20s and early 30s, especially the Futurismo posters out of Italy, as well as alphabets designed in The Netherlands, France, USA and even the Soviet Union. There are 24 stylistic alternate glyphs (SALT), many inspired by a variety of these sources, including a couple from the sign in the front of the Congress Hotel in South Beach, Miami. The others features of the Habana Deco include 363 glyphs, 184 kerning pairs (KERN), 14 ornaments and shapes (ORNM) and 15 discretionary ligatures (DLIG). This is a font with which you can have fun. The zip package includes two versions of the font at no extra charge. There is an OTF version which is in Open PS (Post Script Type 1) format and a TTF version which is in Open TT (True Type)format. FF Mutual is a friendly geometric sans serif full of subtle, unexpected details. Designer Luis Bandovas drew inspiration from an unlikely source—the credits from one of his favorite childhood shows, Space 1999—and turned that spark into a typeface that is warm and approachable, but contemporary. The origin story of HANLEY FONT COLLECTION all starts with the Script. We were designing logos and kept feeling like we needed a different kind of script, vintage feeling but not dated, and not too baseball-y or too formal. We couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for, so we decided to create it ourselves. After that we realized what we really wanted was good wood block looking lettering especially with small caps. And the collection just grew from there - a tall slim style, a monoline version of the script and of course a good sans. We topped off the group with a large selection of catchwords and extras with plenty of swirls, swashes and frames. Hanley has just enough irregularity to the edges to impart a human feel, but it’s still clean. Spillsbury was inspired by some examples of 1920s signwriting (principally seen on the side of some vintage vans-good thing they were in a photograph and not on the move!). Spillsbury draws inspiration from these sources to provide a unique combination of legibility and flair, which echoes the charm of advertising and publicity material from the halcyon days of the 1920s. Inspired in the world of the fast-food, my aim with Burger was to achieve a sexy slab serif font. Since it's not very common to see slabs with swashes I consider this project as an experiment with interesting results. In order to mantain an even weight on the written word, all the glyphs including the swashy ones had to look like compact blocks: This makes the font work much better used with almost no leading, as seen in posters above. Despite the formal look of its genre, this slab serif is also very playful and unique. (Maybe unhealthy food deserves better fonts already, right?) Taste Burger, come on, give it a try! On a more personal note: Why I made this font? Some months ago I started the gym and with it, an strict diet to see some results faster... Maybe my temptation is being, in Lacanian terms, "sublimated" by making delicious and unhealthy fonts.

On a cold winter's night, George Ryan, of Galápagos Design Group, began musing on the possibilities for a “truly original” sans serif typeface. What came out of his musing, and his always-present sketchpad, was ITC Adderville, a typeface whose visual impact is immediate and strong. Ryan explains how he did it: “The rounded ends of its strokes and their skewed baseline contact create an illusion of dancing feet. The tops of lowercase stems emit serif buds, suggesting transition into or out of the serifed form. The spear-like lowercase stroke terminators, along with other distinctive elements such as the stylized reticulation of the lowercase 'g' segments, the salute of that same character's spur, and the bold, non-self-conscious 'i' and 'j' dots, all contribute to the playful and unique nature of this design.” The result is a friendly, lively type family whose graduated weights -- book, medium, and heavy -- lend themselves especially well to use at small display sizes and in short blocks of text.

Arabetics Detroit is a monoshape font family with a fixed single shape per each Arabic Unicode character. This font family supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode Standards 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It includes three weights: regular, bold, and light, each of which has normal and left-slanted (Italic) versions. The design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil style design principles utilizing varying x-heights and no glyph substitutions. The Mutamathil type style was introduced by the designer more than 15 years ago. The Arabetics Detroit font family includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all soft vowel diacritics (harakat), which are selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar high and low levels—top left corner—to clearly distinguish them from the letters. The Tatweel or Kashida lengthening character is a zero-width glyph.

Prelo was designed to be a neutral, highly readable typeface for identity, editorial and information design. With nine weights and nine true italics from Hairline to Black, Prelo is a workhorse typeface full of OpenType features such as small caps, tabular figures, central European characters and historical figures, among others. Like other DSType fonts, most of the diacritics were designed to fit the gap between the x-height and the caps height, avoiding some common problems with the accented characters. The curves are soft and smooth, providing legibility even in very poor conditions, and the neutrality allows this typeface to be used with any serif companion.

The cover of a 1950s-era catalog for the Freedman Novelty Company (of San Francisco California) had the word "Novelty" hand-lettered in an unusually angular type style against various geometric shapes somewhat resembling balloons. While the lettering was quirky enough to warrant re-drawing as a digital font, the shapes would have presented a visual nightmare in design and spacing, so simple black rectangles were substituted and the letters appear in white. Since novelty lettering of this type would never become "standard" in use, its function became the font's name, Limited Appeal JNL. There is just a simple A-Z and 1-0 character set along with basic punctuation.

Obvia, a geohumanist type for all media. Obvia appeared as a result of direct observation on typefaces classified as geometric and the plan to explore for the first time width axes - to be published soon - expanding its usability.
