I generally refer to our typefaces as ‘graphic’ rather than typographic. By that I mean their starting points are usually ways of constructing shapes and systems of shapes. As with other Alias typefaces, Sabre has stone and wood cut letterforms as a starting point. What is interesting about lettercutting is the connection between shape and material. These beautifully crafted letterforms have a particular sharpness which reflects, of course, how they were made. The idea of constructing letters from a kit of parts we first explored in early fonts Elephant and Factory. These are different in that they were very much grid-based, with a geometric structure. For Sabre I also had Fred Smeijers’ stencil construction drawings in mind. These show how a set of components can be the basis for a crafted, elegant typeface. Sabre is quite a loose interpretation of this idea. Sabre’s graphic shape means it works well at large sizes, with a dramatic, angular impact. Its aim is to be typographic enough to function for blocks of small-size text too.

GarciaToons is a dingbats type family integrated by 3 styles: GarciaToons Bunny, GarciaToons Cat, and GarciaToons Mouse. GarciaToons can be defined as a type cartoon to read some text situations at a glance. It is a contemporary type tool for seasoning texts in a way that simple words are insufficient to express. Designs are framed into a straight and geometric visual structure, just as logotypes themselves are. Face expressions are inspired on the worldwide understandable cartoons aesthetic. The result combines logo sharpness with cartoons flexibility. As it's said: A picture is worth more than a thousand words.

Folkwang is an unusual roman type with a lowercase that resembles an upright italic. Unusual top serifs are contrasted by almost no foot serifs. Originally released by the Klingspor foundry in 1955, this face originated from Hermann Schardt while he was the director of the Folkwang Werkkunstschule in Essen Germany circa 1949. According to British book designer and printing historian John Dreyfus in the 1955 Penrose Annual: Folkwang “…is a lovingly made piece of work which could have easily have been little more than an act of awe-struck reverence for the calligraphic techniques rediscovered by Edward Johnston and spread abroad in Germany by Anna Simons. Of special interest is the serif treatment of the lower-case letters: at the feet the terminals are mostly left bare, but the ascenders and the cross-strokes of the f and t are given elaborate curving serifs which in the mass create an effect unusual in a page of letters made as movable types, resembling rather more a piece of intaglio engraving. The ligatures ch and ck are original and successful.”

Here I present Round - a type family that is derived form Epilepsja, which was my first alphabet commercially out. After its release I came to think that there should be other fonts of this design that would enrich the variety of choice. Here comes ‘Epilepsja Round’ which is soft and friendly while the Regular family remains firm and sharp. It supports all Latin-based European and African languages and acts as a multicolour layered font. best for headlines, titles and other display uses.. It is an all-caps alphabet of stencil-sprayed and painted letters found in the city space. The glyphs are simple but unordinary. Every letter has something from Escher-like 3D illusion, but is flat simultaneously. Epilepsja Round consists of three styles: Outline, Solid and Fill. Bronto is a typeface that mutated many times: it went from being morphologically conventional, to have soft features, to finally have some inverted contrasts that made it more dynamical; but all this without losing sight of the meaning of a typefamily, and the aim pursued by this work: Bronto doesn’t behave as a piece of art, but as a tool. In some weights, this typeface possesses fluffy characteristics and is boldly bighead, while in other versions is slightly contrasted and controlled; this in order to maintain the essential features of the typefamily along the versatility and usability of the 20 variations that composed it. Bronto it’s inspired in neo humanists typographies of the 20th century, and in Chilean lettering. Bill Rigney, an old job printer in my home town, established his shop in 1896, closed it in 1900 to take a steady job, stored the equipment in a large shed, and reopened for business upon his retirement in 1950. What a find! A bonanza of old type! We became good friends and upon his death I bought the type. Bless you Bill.

Cabriolet is a connected geometric script re-interpretation inspired by old chromo emblems of Chevy truck Apache of 1960. With three weight variables, it can be used in logos, games and graphic related to cars, automotive, American, Detroit, Art Deco, 1940, 1950, 1960, vintage, retro, classic and old machines. Ballard Ave is inspired by old vintage signage found in Ballard, Washington, an old neighborhood of Seattle. Ballard Avenue is a protected historical district filled with turn of the century brick buildings that have been converted into quaint shops and independent businesses. This alphabet is based on the antique signage that still exists on the sides of many of these buildings.

A playful, casual take on round nib pen lettering was spotted amongst some online scans from an old lettering book. The free-form and stylized shapes of the letters and numbers are reminiscent of old-time show cards, movie titles and signage in vogue around the early 1900s through the 1920s. Fancy Show Card JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Thunderbird is an old American-style typeface. It is based on the kinds of big wood type that were popular in old Wild West advertising, which is evident through its ornate serifs, and the pointy flares that pop in and out of the centers of each stroke. Pseudonym is a low-contrast, subtly-flared serif available in four weights across three styles in both roman and italic. As with all of my typeface designs, I am creating fonts that I would use myself for branding purposes—typefaces with style and purpose that are intended for use in creating logos and distinctive branding typography. I wanted to create a typeface that had incisive flared serifs combined with the strength and solidity of modern grotesque faces. The result is Pseudonym, which I feel has great presence, style and legibility. Although I must admit, I had to tone down the flared serifs during the design process in order to achieve that :) I’m sure you will have great fun playing with some of the Open Type features that I’ve added to Pseudonym. Classica Pro by Bernd Möllenstädt A real alternative for letterpress printing A masterpiece It was only after many years, shortly before the end of his life, Bernd Möllenstädt brought out these early drafts of his Classica Light and Light Italic from his drawer, and asked me to produce for him on the computer a Bold and Bold Italic, from which we later wanted to interpolate further cuts like Regular and so on. The boldening of letters with an oblique axis and with hairlines which should not grow to the same extent as the general line widths, is hard to cope with perfectly, even for the smartest computer program, and even more so, when it concerns an as complicated set of data as those conceived by Bernd. The automatically generated result could therefore only be a first step that had to be improved manually later. This was about the stage that we had reached when Bernd died in March 2013, leaving me behind with comprehensive corrections on proofs of this automatically generated Bold. Although I was aware that it would mean a lot of work to complete the project, I did not want to leave it unfinished and decided to finalize and publish the Classica, also in Bernd‘s honor. In the course of the two years that I worked on this font family it somewhat naturally became also my own. New details were added and some of the existing changed. A book typeface requires the supreme and forgives rarely, it represents a true masterpiece. My intention and my ambition were to create a real alternative for letterpress printing, with a font family that contains all the typographic options for an excellent typesetting, and is better readable and has a better appearance than other existing typefaces.
