Rothorn™ is a modern, minimalist geometric sans with its own personality derived for subtle design details, such as cut diagonal corners, pointed t, very small contrast and closed aperture. The letterforms give the typeface a lot of charisma, keeping a very minimal, clear and well balanced look at the same time. Its powerful and sharp shapes together with the variety of weights from Hairline to Black make it a perfect choice for headlines and branding. Generous x-height, careful spacing and distribution of weights give it a color and legibility great for long paragraphs of text. The Rothorn family consists of 10 weights with corresponding italic styles, giving a total of 20 styles. Italic styles were hand drawn to get sharp and fine letter shapes. Capri is an expressive constructed sans serif typeface in the tradition of Kabel and Avant Garde. The proportions of the letters and the overall impression are modern and contemporary but also retain the crude charme of the constructivist concept. The design is based on basic forms as square, circle and triangle and was developed by drawing not writing. The dominant diagonal forms and the vertically cut endings of the curved strokes give the font its sharp-edged look and its puristic elegance.

Bodoni Classic Swirls breaks all the rules. The idea of Bodoni typefaces is no embellishments and here I go again and do another decorated set of Bodonis. Victory Type is proud to present the release of another classic American typeface. Originally a wood-type, Barnum evokes circus wagons and wanted posters from the wild west. Rugged, rustic, old-fashioned and full of character, Barnum is a charming blast from the past and great for headlines and signage. This chunky slab-serif alphabet was digitized and expanded to include full punctuation and European characters by Noah Rothschild.

A vintage photograph of the Man at the Wheel Saloon in San Pedro, CA [circa 1895] provided an excellent type design source with the unusual lettering on the bar’s sign. Basically a spurred serif design, the unusual characteristic of the type style is the ‘bumps’ or ‘dots’ on the tops of each letter. This has been redrawn digitally as Beer Joint JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Picturesque Stencil JNL gets its name and design from the title of a circa-1920s children’s stencil activity book entitled “Dean’s Picturesque Stencil Book No. 10 - Series 75”; published by the F. Weber Company of Philadelphia and printed in England by Dean. The book’s stenciled title was hand lettered in a bold Roman design in the Art Nouveau style. Picturesque Stencil JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

David Berlow drew Romeo Medium Condensed during winter of 1990, basing the design on the Estrecha Fina weight of Electra, a spectacular art deco sanserif with an unusually fine condensed series. Carlos Winkow designed it circa 1940 for the Nacional typefoundry of Madrid, the leading typefoundry in Spain. Jill Pichotta drew the ultra-light Skinny Condensed, a digital tour de force released with Medium Condensed; FB 1990–91

Within the pages of “The Essentials of Lettering” by Thomas E. French and Robert Meiklejohn (circa 1912) is an example for creating a sans serif alphabet and numerals. The lesson plate is entitled “Upright Single-Stroke Gothic”; a basic monoline font most useful for architectural and drafting plans because of its easy-to-read properties. This type design is now available as Drafting Class JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. In 2014 four new Italic fonts were added. There is a downloadable MODESTO USER MANUAL PDF in the Gallery section for this family.

An image of a vintage British lettering stencil set [probably circa 1960s] spotted in an online auction inspired North End Stencil JNL. The original lettering was a hybrid of both stencil and solid letter forms, but for the digital version all of the characters were given the stencil treatment. North End Stencil JNL is named after a district in London, and the type face is available in both regular and oblique versions.

StudioSans — is a modern representative of the class of sans-serif fonts inspired by the traditional Swiss design and typography of the mid 20th century. This is a minimal, clean and open font family with friendly forms. Focuses on functionality, has a high x-height and short ascender and descender elements. This is combined with soft circles and high legibility of characters contributing to comfortable reading. The family contains six weights from ExtraLight to ExtraBold. Each of them has in its arsenal more than 450 glyphs and knows more than 50 languages. Sometimes the simplest ideas yield more than one result. The basic “dot matrix” design of aligned circles that was the basis for Transactive JNL also yielded Zera JNL (connected rings) and Pillow Puff JNL (fluffy and cloud-like lettering). One more design was originally cast aside. A separate file is available for filling in the letters with a colored background, however minute adjustments may be needed due to the fact that each drawing or design software program has its own characteristics and quirks. Biotic is a dual-personality 18 style typeface which features two distinct design approaches that can be initiated with the flick of a switch. The natural design approach uses conventional forms for a geometric sans but when you switch to the engineered approach some key glyphs become squared to create an edgy approach in an instant. The characters that change are f, i, j, k, l, t and y, along with all punctuation and accents which switch to the square approach. Along Sans Grande is an ultra condensed sans serif font family developed based on the typeface styles of the Along Sans Geometric Font Family. In the case of the black weight with the largest change in the size of the stem, the size is 180:140:100, respectively. And, the thin weight style has the same proportion of stem size. Some Glyphs that need to support the stem alone remain a size 222 for Black Weight. These interpolation rules are sufficient to complement the rhythm and readability of the whole family. This family is perfect for special titling works, logo designs, and cool showcases.

An unsold 1973 TV pilot for the series “Catch 22” (based on Joseph Heller’s 1961 book and the subsequent 1970 movie) had its title hand lettered in an extra bold stencil type style. Heller coined the phrase as a satire on absurd military rules and bureaucracy. Although the show’s title provided only five characters to work with, there was enough inspiration there to create the military styled Enlisted Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. According to Wikipedia: “A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations.”

Velino is the most recent of our premium typefaces. The serif version comes in two packages with three widths: Velino, Velino Condensed, and Velino Compressed. The display package contains high-contrast typefaces, with a modern flair—very feminine but with plenty of character, especially designed for fine print in big text sizes. The text package was designed for any running text. Its proportions and colors make it the ideal for text, even in very difficult conditions such as newspaper printing. We also designed the perfect companion to this enormous type system: Velino Poster, a slab serif typeface with only one weight and its respective italic, but with plenty of muscle, for every time some extra strength is needed, such as setting very big text, magazine covers or newspapers’ special sections. Finally, we designed Velino Sans and Velino Sans Condensed to perfectly match the weight and proportions of Velino, all with matching italics.

Designed at Polygraphmash circa 1940 (project manager Anatoly Shchukin). Based on the text typefaces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries of Obyknovennaya (Common) group. The digital version developed at ParaType in 1996 by Vladimir Yefimov. Initially designed for a collection of works by Lenin, this typeface was widely used in Soviet Union for technical and scientific books, both for text and display.

One of the classic designs of the wood type era is Hamilton Gothic Bold [from the Hamilton Wood Type Foundry circa 1889]. Clean and timeless, it even had found a resurgence during the rock and roll posters of the 1960s, where vintage wood types and Art Nouveau influences merged with the “Hippie Counterculture”. Wood Gothic JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This lettering style is unusual in that combines aspects of several lettering styles. It is essentially a Germanic Blackletter but with many romanized capital letters and also features an italic slant along with some italic lower case traits. It is evocative of “old world” craftsmanship and early 20th century romanticism. The font was developed based on the logo of the Lakin Company of Buffalo, NY circa 1900.
