French Stencil Moderne JNL is modeled from an alphabet found in the 1930s publication "100 Alphabets Publicitaires" by M. Moullet, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Strongly resembling the stencil motif of Futura Black, this French stencil alphabet has enough variations to give it a unique design flavor all its own.

A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster advertising an exhibit of New Jersey area posters had its main lettering rendered in a very condensed hand lettered interpretation of the ever-popular Futura Black Art Deco style. This has now been re-drawn and digitized as Art Event JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Online auctions continue to be a surprising wealth of font design inspiration. In this instance, a number of silk embroidered Art Deco initials inside inverted triangles inspired Deco Pennant Initials JNL. The uppercase version is white lettering on a black background – similar to the originals. On the lowercase keys is a set of initials that are black on white with a black border. Since the inverted triangles resemble pennants, there’s a solid black blank on the left parenthesis key and a outlined blank one on the right parenthesis key. In this way, the initials could be used for monograms or interspersed with the blanks to form short banner messages.

The prolific hand lettering of Samuel Welo is showcased in his “Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers” (published in both 1927 and 1960). A thick and thin Art Deco design in the 1960 edition – somewhat reminiscent of Futura Black (but with significant differences) is now available as Sign Work Deco JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

A 1932 fan magazine from Spain entitled “Films Selectos” (“Select Films”) had those words hand lettered in a decorative Art Deco type style that was a cross between the “Futura Black” style of stencil influenced display lettering and “Fiesta” lettering. This hybrid design is now available digitally as Dance and Sing JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

A retro seventies idea of the Futuristic typeface, Automatic is a reflection on the simple and innocent ideas of the future from our past. Art Museum JNL is yet another take on the classic Art Deco "solid letter" fonts that emulate the style of Futura Black. This version comes to you through the courtesy of a vintage WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster promoting national parks and Winter sports. Take note of the unusual inverted middle crossbar on the 'E' and 'F' as inspired by the poster's hand lettering.

HK Nova is a geometric sans inspired by the Century Gothic and Futura. It formalizes Century Gothic and softens Futura.

Sheet music for the song "Beyond the Blue Horizon" from the motion picture "Monte Carlo" had the movie title in hand-lettering reminiscent of the Futura Black style, but with an inline stripe through each character. These few letter examples were the basis for Gambling Resort JNL and conjure up the Nouveau Riche spending their nights in Monte Carlo packing the roulette wheels, blackjack tables and slot machines.

A modern fraktur briefly based on the typeface Deutschmeister originally designed by Berthold Wolpe in 1934. With a lot of blackness and playful style it is well suited for posters, signage on windows or a book cover. Only one wight for now, but it may be expanded in the future.

A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster promoting national parks depicts Native Americans overlooking the land with the tag line "his hunting ground of yesterday". The hand lettering of that text is reminiscent of Futura Black and similar Art Deco stencil-influenced type designs, but is rendered in an oblique lower case with no capitals. Re-drawn as Sandwich Shop JNL, the typeface is now available in both regular (vertical) and oblique versions.

Tschicholina is inspired by a project by Jan Tschichold dating back to 1929. It is a unicase "universal" font which has always been considered to have very little future; this is why we have it in our catalogue.

Mauer is a proportional, block, geometric font inspired by the advertisement in the polish weekly from 1937 "Tygodnik powszechny". This typeface family contains 3 styles: Regular, Black and Italics.

Initial Seals JNL was created by utilizing the typeface from Gummed Letters JNL and one of the decorative dingbats from Miscellany JNL. On the capital A-Z keys, the letters are black on a white on black seal design, while the lower case a-z keys have a seal version in solid black with white letters. Corresponding blank versions of the seals are on the left and right parenthesis keys, and the period key has a fill oval for overlaying background colors onto the black and white set.

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The A.B. Dick Company was a manufacturer of mimeograph duplicating machines which produced copies by the process of transferring ink through an etched wax stencil onto paper. Customers had the option of purchasing various size and style lettering guides in order to create eye-catching headlines or announcements on their print projects. One such guide called ‘Modern Display’ featured a lettering style resembling Futura Black with added serifs. This is now available as Template Moderne JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Blambot's Adversary BB family is a robust sans with a hint of retro-futurism. It was initially created for use in Blambot founder, Nate Piekos's pesonal title block for design projects. It's therefor very clean and extremely legible. The set includes regular, italic, bold, and bold italic.

Guapa was first born from a personal experiment: transforming a geometric sans serif 'à la Futura' into a charming postmodern deco design. It was applied in a poster specially designed for a typography exhibition called 'Pimp the type'. Later it became a well-suited typeface for the word: from titles for magazines to book & record covers and packaging. The family consists in one single weight, which is provided with Discretionary ligatures, Alternative characters, Swashes forms, Initials and some Stylistic Sets. Plak is a typeface originally created by famous German designer Paul Renner in 1930. Paul Renner is also the designer of the Futura typefaces. Like Futura, Plak is a sans serif design. But its unique qualities include its heaviness, and its un-geometric lowercase a.""

Many decades back, churches, schools and other buildings with a need to display an outdoor message often chose a sign making system utilizing characters silk screened onto metal pieces in a block chamfer style. Each piece had a crimp in the top of the metal which formed a hook to fit over the existing rails of a message panel. This allowed for a finished sign to be displayed within minutes, and a quick change of information was not very time-consuming. A popular version of these signs provided white letters and numbers on black backgrounds. This was the model for Announcement Board JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. There are two different width blank panels on the broken and solid bars for those who wish to kern the letters tight to form a ribbon, however they were designed to have slight spacing in order to emulate the hand assembly of those vintage sign panels.

Here's yet another variation of the classic Futura Black Art Deco stencil form of display lettering. The inspiration for this typeface came from various images of the Blossom Dairy Co. restaurant, originally opened as an ice cream and sandwich shop located on Quarrier Street in Charleston, West Virginia. The restaurant first opened in 1938 as an outgrowth of the Blossom Dairy Co. itself, and existed under various ownerships until it permanently closed on Nov. 11, 2016. Digitally redrawn as Local Eatery JNL, it is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Oliva & Oliva Italic are two strong and funky display fonts. Influences came from typefaces like Futura Black by Paul Renner and Motter Ombra by Othmar Motter, but also Stilla by François Boltana and Allegro by Hans Bohn lay on the desk. All these ingredients were mixed to a new and contemporary type experience and packed in proper OpenType files Oliva & Oliva Italic are OpenType Pro, featuring full Western, Central European, Baltic, Turkish and also Cyrillic language support. They contain ligatures, superior numerals, and a stylish set of decorative ornaments and arrows.

Newsreel Caps JNL is a novelty caps-only outline letter with cast shadow set inside film frames. Although the design idea itself is not new, this version is based on lettering from a vintage piece of sheet music for a song featured in the movie "Fox Movietone Follies". The font is a wink and nod to Fox's long-running newsreel series called "Fox Movietone News". The upper case keys have black letters on a white frame, while the lower case keys have white letters on a black frame. A blank white frame is on the period key; a blank black frame is on the comma key. Use this font for individual initials, set the characters loose for effect or set them tight (as provided) for a continuous film strip.

Before the mid-to-late 1970s, when retailers started to embrace UPC (universal price code) technology on a grand scale, pricing merchandise took on many forms. One method especially popular with variety stores (such as Woolworth's, McCrory's, Kress, etc.) were pre-printed price tags that came in small pads and were inserted into metal holders. Shelf Tags JNL recreates a vintage price tag based on examples seen online, and allows the user different ways to create their own vintage-style price tags. You can either utilize the round pen nib style numbers and price marks to place on any size or type tag, or type out prices using the reversed characters (white on black) along with the two end caps provided to form a complete tag unit. For the more adventurous, a complete blank tag is also provided in case the desire is to print a solid color tag background and [using the regular numbers] crate prices in custom colors. Two sets of smaller number (for "floating" cents prices) are also provided in regular numbers and reverse panels. As an extra bonus, there is a set of 1 through zero, dollar sign, cents sign and decimal point individual black-on-white outlined panels for making individual pricing numbers. Some time back, a few basic characters were drawn out (possibly inspired by some vintage sheet music) and set aside for a future font project. Despite being incomplete for a few years, this once-forgotten design is now available as Deco Revival JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Space Mode is a multi-weighted typeface, sent back in time from the distant future. Forward-looking typeface designers often predict a reductive future where Latin letterforms have become increasingly modularized and simplified, or random bits have mysteriously gone missing. Thankfully, this is not the case, and typography has instead flourished and evolved. New forms have appeared, and some revived from historical references. A more complex drawing model has arisen that seems to add new curves in a effort to tame the strange diagonals that appear in the final quarter of the alphabet.

In 1929 Chauncey Griffith at Mergenthaler commissioned W.A. Dwiggins to design a warmer and less mechanical Geometric Sanserif to compete with Futura. Dwiggins’ best efforts proved that human warmth had little to do with cool geometry; for twelve years, until the introduction of Spartan, Mergenthaler lost ground to Intertype’s licensed version of Futura.

IxD is a modular, semi-futuristic sans serif that uses its geometry to evoke the kind of future we all thought we'd have back when we were kids: sleek, assertive, cool. Many of its deep cuts and unusual letterforms are strikingly out of the norm, but they still feel inviting.
