1970’s Techno-typography finds its rebirth in Berkmire AOE. From its beefy weight to its narrow and sometimes unusual counter cuts, Berkmire AOE started as a digitization of a film typeface called Belden by LetterGraphics. This bulky techno typeface was taken from its limited character set and fleshed out to include an expanded language glyph set. The Capital letterforms seem to push the edge of readability, while the lowercase falls more in line. The letterforms of Berkmire AOE are easy to convert to paths and extend various stems, making this revival something you can really let your imagination run wild with for your designs.

English Grotesque is based on the proportions of an early 20th century signwriter’s sans, emphasising the characteristic idiosyncrasies of type of the period. Sharing a similar Roman circle-and-square construction as Gill Sans or Johnston Railway, it has a wide T and W, a narrow S, and a long-tailed R. The Roman alphabet did not include a lower-case, and therefore early sans-serifs tended to base theirs on handwritten or cursive models, resulting in more even character widths. English Grotesque, by contrast, carries the more characterful proportions of the capitals through to the lower case. Available in six weights, with optional alternative versions for the Q, &, £ and J.

The inspiration source for Almond Monogram is a highly unusual warped letterset from a vintage embroidery publication combining to create an almond form monogram. Originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, it has many other possibilities. Numbers and letters can be combined to create one side of the monogram, while the other side is completed by ornament glyphs under the comma, period, braceleft, braceright, bracketleft and bracketright characters. This is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven with ornamentation. Eurostile Candy is a fun spinoff from Akira Kobayashi's Eurostile Next family. As the name implies, it is based on Eurostile but with many striking new features. Most obviously, the corners and joints have been rounded off to give it a more friendly and softer feel. On top of those changes, the main skeleton of many characters have been modified. Any extra strokes have been removed - such as in the a, s, or t - and joints have been simplified to create even more square shapes - like in the n and r. With these contemporary and futuristic-styled alterations, Eurostile Candy is a cool new design great for many display projects.

Nada Fraktur is a modern geometrical blackletter made to serve your hip intentions. Think hip-hop album sleeves, your local t-shirt print shop, and Tumblr-boy action. The goal with this typeface is to blend medieval aesthetic with sharp modern cuts. You could say that the font is sort of monospaced, but it is not. Goudy Stout was designed by Frederic W. Goudy in 1930. This version was created by Vincent Connare while at Microsoft. Goudy Stout is a decorative typeface that is quite unusual, a novelty of sorts among Goudy's many typographic achievements. The Goudy Stout font is considered a frivolous typeface. Now Appearing JNL is a digital version of some hand-lettering spotted on an early 1960s ad for a Miami Beach night club. Its fun, casual appearance makes it perfectly suitable for any project that conveys a relaxed atmosphere. The font was intentionally not kerned, so the free-flowing form of the lettering is at its best, but it can be set tight by hand if a more compact look is desired.

The cover lettering of a 1940s issue of a romance comic spotted in an auction online was the inspiration for Monthly Adventures JNL. Classic in its Art Deco look, this condensed outline font is evocative of the hand-lettered titles used during the Golden Age of the comic book. Available in both the original outline version and a thick, solid version with the outline removed, as well as oblique variations of both.

ZT Arturo is a sans serif family designed by Francesco Canovaro as part of his research in the digital reinvention of handmade brush lettering. MB NEGATIVESPACE was inspired on a trip to Birmingham with my wife, seeing a billboard with the main text and parts of it missing. The idea is to use it sparingly; use a good amount of tracking to fill in the blanks and it works even better. Great for headlines, displays logotypes and short texts.

In the 1943 Three Stooges comedy short “Higher than a Kite”, Curly reaches into a box with the label “hand grenades” painted on its side and pulls out one of the devices. The bold, squared stencil hand lettering on that prop inspired Stencil Label JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Doodle Pen is a whimsical hand-drawn typeface. Characters are based on ballpoint pen multi-line drawings creating a scribbled texture and soft edges. This typeface will work well for headings, short paragraphs and scrap-book style designs. Birdcage was designed from a very short lettering sample in Rob Roy Kelly's American Wood Type book, from the image I created a complete font plus a regular version with lowercase. In the past banner style fonts would limit you to a monospaced look, so how do you kern a banner font? Well, with today's OpenType font format the solution is simple, draw the kerning pairs together as one character glyph and place them inside the font then use auto substitution to access those characters when needed. Birdcage (OpenType version) includes 249 auto ligature kerning pairs, to use this feature you will need an application that takes advantage of OpenType features such as Adobe CS products.

Zapfino Arabic is designed by Nadine Chahine as the Arabic companion to Hermann Zapf’s iconic Zapfino typeface, with the approval of Prof. Zapf. The design is an evolution of Arabic calligraphic traditions that combines Naskh and Nastaaliq to form a backward slanted calligraphic style. The character proportions refer to Naskh traditions but the isolated and final forms bring with them an exaggerated swash-like movement that references the extravagant ascenders and descenders of Zapfino. A set of slab serif framed capitals is displayed in the 1906 edition of the Keystone Type Foundry specimen book as “John Alden Initials”. Digitally redrawn as Keyden Drop Caps JNL, regular and reverse versions are available in one font file. Upper case keys contain the regular version, lower case keys have the reverse version. Mundane information—the sort you might ignore—often appears in the form of very simple, utilitarian lettering, devoid of personality, the sort of industrial lettering you find on old blueprints, park restrooms, and electrical boxes. MVB Diazo is such a thing. It looks like lettering done earnestly with a plastic template. The monoline caps—constructed from straight lines and simple curves—have rounded details as if rendered by a blunt pen on a topographical survey or by a router on a rustic campground sign. The MVB Diazo fonts are compact, available in two widths: Condensed and Extra Condensed. Each width offers four weights from Light to Black. The fonts are perfect for wherever plain and boring letterforms are required.
