FreeDee is a re-draw of some experimental lettering first drawn during A-Level (just after high-school) art and design studies. It was originally purely self initiated, and one of the first things I used Illustrator to draw. This version takes the original handful of letters and extrapolates a full alphabet with basic latin accents.

A set of over 50 ornaments, connecting borders, flourishes and decorative motifs originally designed by Frederic Goudy throughout his career. Many of these designs were used by Goudy at his Village Press and offered by his Village Foundry in the 1920s. The styles range from complex title page illustrations to simple linking borders, but all have the unique Goudy style. As a successor of Didots famous font, which marked the beginning of modern typography, the Monceau has inherited the spirit, elegance and sophistication of french style, although in a revamped design, typical for the first years of the 21st century. Liberated from its serifs and with soft and round small letters the Monceau approaches ornamental typography and thus perfectly lends itself to being enlarged: it’s a font that loves to be closely looked at. Its name, lent from the famous parc Monceau in Paris, evokes and reinvents in a modern graphical way all of the Parisian chic at the end of 18th and the beginning of the19th century (the time Didot was born), the French Revolution and Empire, the architecture of this business quarter and notably the arabesques of the monumental gates still present in our times.

More Printing Helpers JNL gathers another assortment of vintage printing embellishments and ornaments from the late 1800s. Within the standard twenty-six alphabet keys are pointing hands, corner pieces, border elements and decorative center and end pieces. On the lower case, certain elements have been flipped or inverted for matching effects. Some additional positions are available on the 1 through 9 keys and on the colon and semicolon. A bonus to this font: three expandable panels. the first (with decorative end caps) is attained by typing the left parenthesis for the left side, the hyphen for the center lines and the right parenthesis for the right side. The second one features ribbon ends, and the combination of the less than-equal-greater than keys creates this panel. The third design can be made by typing the left brace/vertical bar/right brace keys.

At first glance, the lettering style of Technopen JNL seems to emulate the computer-age fonts of the 1980s. In actuality, this font is derived from an alphabet sample found in an instructional booklet for the Esterbrook Drawlet Pens. The Drawlet line was Esterbrook's answer to the iconic Speedball pen points sold through their chief competitor, the Hunt Pen Manufacturing Company. So, what seems to be late 20th Century typography is actually from vintage source material. In fact, the entire contents of the instructional booklet were copyright 1929! A few minor changes were made to the original A-Z alphabet and additional characters were added. The name Technopen is a shortening of the term 'technical pen', which is both a nod to the techno age of the 80s and the technical instruments of the past utilized for drawing and lettering.
