Slovenian type designer Mitja Miklavcic created this serif FontFont between 2008 and 2010. When they say everything’s already been invented, they’re exaggerating a bit. But not much. When we design new typefaces, whether we like it or not, we have in our memories the historical legacy and invention of our predecessors. That’s also true for more detailed work on optical sizes, intended for the largest or the smallest typesetting. Although for display sizes we give room for fantasy and elegance when shaping fine serifs or smooth drawings full of refined details, for styles designed for footnotes and other small texts we do the exact opposite – pragmatically and rationally, with knowledge of the optical properties of small text. And that’s precisely the case for the Tabac Micro subfamily, a sans-serif typeface derived from Tabac Sans.

Stimul is a singular monoline sans serif font family. The type idea is based on experiments with the grapheme of the letters. Sitmul contains a huge amount of alternative glyph forms which vary from fairly conventional to very whimsical. Mix them to enrich your text set by a myriad of unpredictable combinations. The Adelle family continues its stylistic expansion with the release of Adelle Mono and Adelle Mono Flex by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione. Monospaced typefaces are the default choice for developers and programmers and are also an aesthetic choice for many designers and communicators. Monospaced typefaces are born of necessity rather than purely aesthetic values. Each glyph is constrained to a strict box, making the naturally smaller ones the same width as the naturally wider ones. While this serves the functional purpose of keeping text aligned in vertical and horizontal rows, it is completely unnatural in terms of readability. A monospaced ‘l, i’ are overblown compromises while ‘m, w’ become compressed mutations. The Adelle Mono family was therefore designed with both the developer and the aesthete in mind. Adelle Mono respects its necessary constraints while still being visually appealing and easily read. This is what you get when you mix monoline rounded letters with some bracketed serifs and finish it off with a sprinkle of ornamental appendages. The result is very readable, rather original and quite charming. I have fixed some inconsistencies in serif designs across the weights, cleaned up the serif connections - and added a fourth weight. But I have kept all the wonky curves and slightly differing stroke thicknesses, as they are so integral to the charm. Kevin King says: "I guess all type designers at some point think 'Well, I'll just have a go at a standard text face...' There is a long story here somewhere, suffice it to say that I started with the thinnest version - typical. I wanted to make a standard serif text face - until I saw it in print and thought "Yuk! it looks like everything else!" - still does really but with twiddles and pooneys..." If you find the "twiddles & pooneys" too much you can tone them down with the OpenType Stylistic Alternate feature (which will make sure they don't appear on three consecutive letters) or remove them completely with the OpenType Swash feature. The motivation behind the Botanika family was the desire to create a text version of the Magion font. Although the glyphs were originally drawn using the same proportions, they were subsequently adjusted in order to improve legibility. The font retains certain characteristics of the original, such as the top serif on the “i” and the similar bottom serif on the “l”. Lowering the x-height lent the family a new and original character. The italics are slightly more condensed than the regular weight, without losing the austere grace of the regular weight. They are distinct enough to stand out in the text. Alternative characters can be selected to spice up the setting, or conversely to subdue headlines by using more traditional letter shapes. Small caps are available as well. The monospace version is a 10 pitch font: at 10 pt type size 10 characters fit exactly into the width of one inch, meaning that individual letters Take up 60 % of an em in width. The family is provided with matching italics. The modifications made during the OpenType transition included the addition of missing glyphs to cover the Suitcase Standard set and adding relevant kerning pairs, plus redrawing the bold weight and the accents. Despite its lower x-height, the font is often used for setting medium to long texts. Its slightly archaic feel lends text set in Botanika an air of novelty, which may be the reason why it is so popular in extensive corporate identity systems. If you are looking for an alternative to the cold, neutral sans serifs which are so popular these days, Botanika is the perfect choice.

Monotalic was created as a fun experiment, exploring better solutions for the monospaced type design. Most monospaced (fixed-width) typefaces have the same main design problem regarding the lowercase – filling the empty space around l, f, i, j and r. That usually brings the addition of slab serifs to those narrow characters, causing many monospaced fonts to look and feel alike. Monotalic solves that problem by adopting the handwritten (or cursive) form for those problematic characters, which allows them to be defined in more strokes, thus getting a better distribution of form in that fixed-width space. On the other hand, cursive writing usually lacks the legibility of a Roman (Regular upright) style, so Monotalic was created to be a hybrid, taking the best of both worlds. Monospaced fonts today are mostly used for coding. Modern code editors use colored text in order to differentiate between different kinds of code. So, in that environment there’s actually no need for traditional text styling by adding Italics, Bold or other styles, because the code lines are overstated as it is. That is why Monotalic focuses on one style only, in three widths and four weights. The weights allow users to choose the perfect contrast of text on screen, depending on their monitor resolution and background color in the editor. Movie scripts are almost exclusively set in 12pt Courier. It became the industry standard because when set in the specific “screenplay format" it helps with the breakdown of the schedule and budgeting process of the film production. Although it looks completely different, text set in Monotalic (Normal width) will take the same amount of space as Courier.

When set in larger sizes or used for headlines, ITC Panache's character traits becomes more apparent and pronounced to the reader. They help to create graphics with distinction and style. Big or small. a little or a lot. it's hard not to use ITC Panache well. If you could pigeonhole ITC Panache, it would probably be classified as a stressed sans", but this would not completely describe, or do justiceto, the design. There is a slight contrast in stroke weight, which becomes more pronounced as the familiy weight increases; but there is a more to distinguish ITC Panache from ather sans serifs. Perhaps most obvious is its high waist and correspondingly slight condensation of the top half of the "round" capitals. Both of these traits link ITC Panache with the sensuous forms of art nouveau creations. In contrast are the typicall old style "e" found in designs like Cloister and ITC Berkeley Old Style, and the two storied "g" common to the early 20th century sans serif designs. The capital "A" even has the cupped top found in Caslon designs. Part of the beauty of ITC Panache is that all of these seemingly unrelated desig traits are melded into a design of exceptional continuity."

While it is obvious that this is an ornamental style font, it is more than that: it is a Celtic Knotwork design tool! Irish, Scottish, Welsh, even Norse and Viking cultures have used knotwork designs for millenia. These ancient traditional interwoven designs are experiencing a revival as Celtic culture gains exposure in the modern world. Intricate Celtic knots are featured everywhere from jewelry to tattoos. While many enjoy them simply for their beauty and fascinating twists, they can also be used to add an air of myth, magic and mystery to any project. The interlaced lines make them perfect for wedding invitations, borders, dividers and rules, web graphics, and logos. I began using Celtic knotwork designs in my own work as part of my knifemaking and jewelry making hobbies. I read all of the books I could find about Celtic knots and at first I drew them by hand with pencil and paper. Then as I realized how nice it would be to have "undos" I switched over to using Corel Draw. Draw proved to be a natural for this type of artwork with tools like contour and the trim function. But even with these great tools, it was still tedious to create these designs. I noticed that I was able to reuse a lot of parts in repetitive sections. I developed a small library of reusable bits and chunks of Celtic designs. I found them so useful and fun to work with that I began thinking about ways to market my Celtic design kit. I thought about CDR and EPS formats, but then I thought of creating this toolset as a True Type Font. That way anyone with ANY program that uses fonts could easily create Celtic knotwork designs. Word processors, embroidery programs, engraving programs, jewelry design programs, CAD/CAM programs...almost every program can use fonts. I was also interested in CNC work and thought that this font would work well for applications such as laser etching, vinyl signs, and machining. With that in mind, I designed each character of the font with extremes of accuracy. If one character from the font is used at one inch tall, every control point will be placed to an accuracy of better than 0.0001 inch. I wanted every piece to meet exactly with the next, with no possibility for misalignment. The different styles are all very carefully created to fit accurately with each other. So the Filled Style fits exactly into the Outline Style, and the Inverse Style fits precisely around the Outline Style so as to make up the background behind the knotwork. Combining the styles allows you to have complete creative control. By assembling the nearly 200 pieces it is quite easy to produce very complex designs. It is actually a bit like playing with a puzzle and many people really enjoy putting the pieces together to make designs. In fact, I have had many customers tell me of how they love playing with this font and making knots into the wee hours of morning. If you like puzzles then you will absolutely love this font! And creating the patterns is just the beginning of the fun! If you apply your favorite Photoshop tricks on them you can make anything from dazzling chrome knotwork to carved stone. Photoshop plug-ins like SuperBladePro are great for converting knotwork text into corroded bronze or rusted iron. Use your knotwork to add texture to a virtual landscape, or add them as surface embelishments on architecture and furniture. You can also make round knotwork by using this font with "WordArt" (WordArt is included with every copy of Microsoft Word.
