Originally Mamontov has been inspired by poster (usually wooden) types of the end of 19th—the beginning of 20th centuries. The type family was named after Savva Ivanovich Mamontov (1841-1918), Russian industrialist and patron of the arts. Massive asymmetric serifs, stocky proportions, type weight... are traces of harsh imperial reality. And soft forms of ovals, exaggerated compensators, humanistic curves of serifs and horizontal strokes betray the sensitivity and artistry of Savva Ivanovich. Mamontov has 25 styles, ranging from Light to Black and from Condensed to Wide, with more than 1000 characters per font.

Based on character shapes with origins rooted in the work of 19th Century American wood type makers, DST Mechanic Gothic draws influence from the poster types found in the impactful advertising during the Industrial revolution. It has several classic condensed sans-serif elements, and although Darren Scott has injected a contemporary twist to refresh the character shapes, this typeface does not deny its roots. Kaarna is a rough hand drawn sans serif. The underlying shapes and structure are designed in the style of modern sans serifs which are made livelier by the hand drawn look. The condensed proportions make it especially suitable for use in large headlines and to achieve maximum impact. I happened to come across a facsimile of a sample of text with typeface made by Sweynheim & Pannartz in 1476. I scanned the sample, and redraw all the available glyphs from the sample in RobFog. After that I added the missing characters by copying and pasting the forms of the original characters, and filling in the missing parts.

An image of an antique metal marking stencil [circa late 1890s or early 1900s] reading “Folck’s Roller Mills #196 New Surprise manufactured by Wolfe Brothers, Cumberland, MD” had the words “New Surprise” rendered in a Western/Victorian typeface. Those letters served as the model for Old Trail JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Based on the all caps decorative face Fournier le Jeune of 1768 by Pierre Simon Fournier for the Peignot Foundry. This version uses more elaborate "Vouge Initials" caps which were offered by ATF in 1920s. Because of the decorative nature of this design, a full character set is not included, but accented characters and basic punctuation are included.

HOLBORN Aptly named after ‘High Holborn’, a high-street in London where the Central School of Art & Design was based. A font, just in capitals, based on the original design and the earlier sketches (1976) by André Toet. The strong optical illusion in this alphabet makes it an outstanding typeface.
