ITC Don't Panic 's distressed shapes and craggy outlines evoke the feeling you get when you're just barely in control of a situation. This is type design on the edge. ITC Panic is further down the emotional track, when you've actually lost control and there is no hope in sight. Thompson says the inspiration for these faces arrived one day in the mail. I received an envelope that looked like it had a rough trip; the type that was stamped on it had a tired, ragged appearance. Ironically, the haggard envelope woke me up. I got excited and wanted to replicate the look as a font of type." Thompson designed ITC Don't Panic, then stood back and looked at it and decided it cried out for a more agitated companion. ITC Don't Panic gave birth to the positively psychotic offspring, ITC Panic. Both are all-cap designs with alternate characters in the unshift position. Creating an authentically disturbed appearance proved to be a challenge for Thompson. "I tried to design agitated characters, but they looked staged. So I tried multiple photocopies, but that didn't work. Eventually, I laser-printed the basic characters, wadded up the lasers, then flattened them out and stomped on them with heavy boots. The end result was scanned and used as the basis for the rest of the design." Thompson's work on web sites and multimedia has influenced his interest in type and typography that transcends the cool, unemotional nature of the computer."

Breathe Neue is not just an update of my renowned Breathe of 2010, this is something else... Many times I find myself looking for inspiration in my previous creations. The original Breathe has something on its essence: Something that almost 10 years later still caught my attention. Like its name suggests, letters seem to be breathing, moving, alive. Many years passed so I asked myself if there was still something I could do for it, something to get the most of that beautiful essence... Suddenly, I was already working on its curves: Many new loops, more polished, more refined. Also the proportion and spacing were altered to embellish the font. Breathe Neue’s swashes are addictive. I couldn't find another word. Irresistible? Maybe. Once you see some of its loops you want to see more. I believe this might be due to its very geometrical feel, which match well with the bodonian curves of the font. See also how well it works with Breathe Caps. And what if you combine them with Breathe Special? wow. I'm still young (yeah, sure) and I believe there're still many years ahead to enjoy this great profession, and to make many new (and astonishing, I hope) fonts. The Englishman William Caslon punchcut many roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces from 1720 until his death in 1766. At that time most types were being imported to England from Dutch sources, so Caslon was influenced by the characteristics of Dutch types. He did, however, achieve a level of craft that enabled his recognition as the first great English punchcutter. Caslon's roman became so popular that it was known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum (and the ocean), the Americans used it for their Declaration of Independence in 1776. The original Caslon specimen sheets and punches have long provided a fertile source for the range of types bearing his name. Identifying characteristics of most Caslons include a cap A with a scooped-out apex; a cap C with two full serifs; and in the italic, a swashed lowercase v and w. Caslon's types have achieved legendary status among printers and typographers, and are considered safe, solid, and dependable. Carol Twombly designed this Caslon revival for Adobe in 1990, after studying Caslon's own specimen sheets from the mid-eighteenth century. This elegant version is quite true to the source, and has been optimized for the demands of digital design and printing. Adobe Caslon? makes an excellent text font and includes just about everything needed by the discriminating typographer: small caps, Old style Figures, swash letters, alternates, ligatures, expert characters, central European characters, and a plethora of period ornaments.

I hope that you enjoy the "Linden" font. The basis for this new font is my Leaf font. As much as I love the Leaf font, however, I felt (and still feel) the desire to have a larger font, for three reasons: 1. I enjoy customizing my internet browser to show different fonts. The original "Leaf" font was a bit too small for that. The new "Linden" font is perfect for this function. 2. Some of the fonts that I use in writing e-mails look their best at sizes 24 or 36. That’s fine for me, but unless I want to go to the trouble each time of changing the size, then the recipients oft my e-mails get wolloped with an enormous-sized font. When I use "Linden" for my e-mails, it’s automatically a perfect size at 12 or 14, solving this problem. 3. I also enjoy customizing the font in which I read my e-mails. Unfortunately, there are only a few which are legible in the tiny size in which this is configured. Again, "Linden" is configured to be large enough automatically so that it can easily be read by anyone. I am pleased to offer a pleasant font for use in any or all of the scenarios; I love fun solutions and hope that you will enjoy the "Linden" font. (Just a tip: when printing out documents using the "Linden" font, I love it best in font size 11!)

A faux script font typical of classic american branding. I have totally reworked all the letterforms: they started with a “notch” and ended flat - I have removed the “notch” and rounded off the ending stroke, so now you can actually start words with the lowercase letters. I have also improved the spacing (especially after the capitals), and of course added all the “foreign” glyphs. A classic is reborn! Nick Curtis says: "Just another “somewhere from the thirties to the fifties” kinda script, named kinda after a sixties rock festival." The lifetime of Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492) coincides with the rise of metal type as it displaced broad pen calligraphy for the production of books. This revolution marked the end of formal Western calligraphy, as the industry employed metalworkers who designed type according to geometric measurement while calligraphers were forced to become secretaries who practiced handwriting systems. Renaissance Florence should have witnessed the marriage of calligraphy and typography, just as all the other arts and sciences flourished as classical learning was applied to technical advances; but the metalworkers and geometricians measured, dissected and recast the calligraphic letters by crude indirect methods, and in the end took all the life out of them. Here they languished until digital type has made it possible to render the precise motion of the broad pen stroke into type. Lorenzo is a confluence of many strains from the Middle Ages, brought together within the classical harmony of the capitals. It attempts to bypass metal type, using calligraphic means to achieve the precision of type while retaining the life of the stroke: a classical font that would be familiar to Lorenzo himself as well as to the modern eye. The Lorenzo family comes in four weights, ranging from light to bold. Two sets of italics, one with swashed caps and ascenders, complement each weight. The Jantze font is a project undertaken by Dan Bailey of Fontosaurus and Michael Jantze, creator of the nationally-syndicated comic strip, The Norm. All their royalties from the font will go to The Lance Armstrong Foundation. For those that have been living under a rock for the last five years, Lance is a professional bike racer that overcame advanced testicular cancer to not only come back to his sport, but to dominate its premiere event, the Tour de France. In climbing to the top of his sport, he has become a legend among cyclists and a beacon of hope for those battling cancer and their families. His foundation provides financial grants to researchers working to improve our odds against the disease, individuals stricken with cancer, and survivors of the disease that are advocates for survivorship issues in their communities. Fantastic ML is an exuberant Art Nouveau font. It was originally released as “Modern Style” by Fonderie G. Peignot & Fils, Paris, France sometime before 1903. Since “Le style moderne” was the generic French name for Art Nouveau, it is possible that someone decided a less generic name was needed. The typeface became known as Fantastic. Compared to conventional text letters, it is just that. Fantastic has a whimsical, architectural feel. The typeface reminds me of a cross between Hoffmann’s Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. The letterforms themselves are similar to those by Ludwig von Zumbusch on the cover of “Jugend” in March, 1896, but with the addition of serifs. Fantastic ML is a decorative, all-cap font intended for display use and functions best at 18 points or larger. There are a total of 306 glyphs. In addition to the standard 1252 Western Europe Code Page with character slots up to decimal position 255, there are glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. However, some older applications may only be able to access the Western Europe character set (1252). The zip package includes two versions of the font at no extra charge. Acarau is a 6 fonts display typeface with high reverse contrast—since from Roman capitals and calligraphy, usually Latin alphabet letters have thiner horizontal steams and thicker verticals, these features being optical or visual—quite adequate for logos, headlines and posters. Moreover, the style of the typeface is inspired by Italics form factor: lowercase letters having less strokes to make their shapes; A has one story; E has one stroke shape, such as K, G, Y and Z; F has a descent. To give it more calligraphic feeling, there is contrast for uppercases as well, this is very perceived by the diagonal letters like A, K, M, N, V, W, X, Y and Z. J also has a descent. Q and R have natural swashes, but they have alternates in case the costumer want to go for more usual forms—including accent marked letters. Acarau is a 12 months project, the contrast for uppercases were increasing as the process was made. Despite the fact that over the years several designers have manually created stencil lettering based on DIN for various projects, there has never been a professional digital stencil version of a DIN-based typeface. After the successful introduction of DIN Monospace a few months earlier, PF DIN Stencil now completes Parachute’s extensive library of DIN superfamilies. It was based on its original counterpart DIN Text Pro and was particularly designed to address contemporary projects, by incorporating elements and weights which are akin to industries such as fashion, music, video, architecture, sports and communications. Traditionally, stencils have been used extensively for military equipment, goods packaging, transportation, shop signs, seed sacks and prison uniforms. 'Meeeeoooow'! Seventies is another of my 'funkadelic' attempts (1) to fill the existing gap of seventyish looking fonts. In my opinion, that decade has a hidden treasure regarding type that remains unexplored: Only very few fonts rescue its 'groovy' essence, its ‘colourful’ qualities. But, don't have a cow man , and keep on truckin! With Seventies, my new foxy mama , your projects will stand out among the rest. Since there’s not much information available about this kind of lettering I had to get ideas from other styles: Nowadays it’s easy to find all kind of books or guides to understand and practice how different styles of calligraphy and lettering should be done. However, for some reason, 60s and 70s letters seemed to ignore/be free of rules... Was this suggesting the birth of postmodernism? I incorporated some ideas of the copperplate style of calligraphy: The ductus of its forms may be compared to the way letters are made in snell/engrosser’s script. Obviously, this is just the idea behind; the delicacy of thins is replaced here with the graceful imprint of really thick thicks with a brushy look and tons of good vibe . Seventies will work awesome in posters, brands, magazines, book-covers of any kind, due to its modern look adapted to our century. Well, catch you on the flip~side ! Jürgen Weltin's Mantika Informal is pretty difficult to categorize, but very easy to like. This particularly reader-friendly typeface in regular and bold weights, brings to the table the informal fluidity of a script, the consistency of an inclined italic, and the open and airy forms and contrast of a humanist sans. The result is a warm, approachable, and very legible typeface that is never static and staid, but rather invites an attentive, reading eye. The original idea behind Mantika Informal lay in the challenge to create a typeface for setting children's books. German designer Jürgen Weltin aimed to create a reading typeface for those just starting to learn how to read. On the one hand, it should help create clear word-images; on the other, its letterforms should remain uncomplicated but resist mechanical and industrial sterility. Mantika?s subtle cursive lines stress the printed word's connection with handwriting, in addition to making the transition from school writing exercises to printed texts seamless and effortless. Oscar Guerrero found inspiration for Vala in shop window lettering near his home in Bogotá, Colombia. “The capital A, R and V caught my attention and I photographed the window for future reference,” he explains. “Later I started to draw more letters inspired by the ones in the window.” Guerrero admits that he has always admired the work of Giambattista Bodoni and allowed his classic Didone designs to infuse Vala. Striking contrast in stroke weights, lively ball-terminals and a large x-height give Vala the grace and force of a Waikiki wave. Not satisfied with just a basic character set, Guerrero also took advantage of OpenType’s capabilities and drew a complete set of swash capitals, a bevy of fancy ligatures, and a suite of lowercase alternative designs. The result is that Vala easily emulates custom lettering in posters, headlines and logotypes. The “romantic” part of Vala? Guerrero dedicated the design to his girlfriend, Valentina, and named it after her.

As designers, we seek perfection and originality. The more we step back and look at our work, the more changes we tend to find necessary. Drastic modifications are inevitable. The same is true of Grayfel. Grayfel began as an exercise at insigne to explore the crowded space of neutral sans. While the world of sans serifs is admittedly crowded, I still managed to find something new and different. The final Grayfel consists of 42 full-featured OpenType fonts containing three widths: Regular, Condensed, and Extended. Every width consists of 14 fonts--seven weights with matching italics, making it a good companion for setting clear text and headlines for print and screen. OpenType features are also available. There’s figure choices, such as proportional and old style figures. Additionally, Greyfel includes sophisticated typographic attributes: ligatures, fractions, alternate characters, small caps, superscripts and subscripts. Its extended character set supports Central, Western and Eastern European languages. Optical compensations also mean the outcome of this family is a hybrid of humanistic proportions.
