Ridiculously wide, mathematical and angular, and yet, looks good in vast blocks of text. Comtype is a cross and exaggeration between vintage computer text and old-school typewriter text. Five weights for your typesetting pleasure.

A poster for the 1917 Charlie Chaplin comedy “Easy Street” had Chaplin’s name hand lettered in thick, round cornered block characters. This inspired Silent Comedy JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Zuzana Licko's goal for Fairplex was to create a text face which would achieve legibility by avoiding contrast, especially in the Book weight. As a result of its low contrast, the Fairplex Book weight is somewhat reminiscent of a sans serif, yet the slight serifs preserve the recognition of serif letterforms. When creating the accompanying weights, the challenge was to balance the contrast and stem weight with the serifs. To provide a comprehensive family, Licko wanted the boldest weight to be quite heavy. This meant that the "Black" weight would need more contrast than the Book weight in order to avoid clogging up. But harmonizing the serifs proved difficult. The initial serif treatments she tried didn't stand up to the robust character of the Black weight. Several months passed without much progress, and then one evening she attended a talk by Alastair Johnston on his book "Alphabets to Order," a survey of nineteenth century type specimens. Johnston pointed out that slab serifs (also known as "Egyptians") are really more of a variation on sans serifs than on serif designs. In other words, slab serif type is more akin to sans-serif type with serifs added on than it is to a version of serif type. This sparked the idea that the solution to her serif problem for Fairplex Black might be a slab serif treatment. After all, the Book weight already shared features of sans-serif types. Shortly after this came the idea to angle the serifs. This was suggested by her husband, and was probably conjured up from his years of subconscious assimilation of the S. F. Giants logo while watching baseball, and reinforced by a similar serif treatment in John Downer's recent Council typeface design. The angled serifs added visual interest to the otherwise austere slab serifs. The intermediate weights were then derived by interpolating the Book and Black, with the exception of several characters, such as the "n," which required specially designed features to avoid collisions of serifs, and to yield a pleasing weight balance. A range of weights was interpolated before deciding on the Medium and Bold weights.

Afronaut PRO (New version of typeface published in 2019) was inspired by vernacular Latin & Arabic typography in St. Louis (on Senegal-Mauretania Border, Africa). Geometric forms working well and contrasting with smooth, round elements. After reading "Afronautics – from Zambia to the Moon" by Bartek Sabela (about Zambian conquest of space) a breif was set to create typeface that looks like mix between: vernacular Arabic script, futuristic typography and some special lettering that I found in Africa during my travels to Guinée, Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania and West Sahara. Afronaut has seven weights, also many letters have 3 different forms. Afronaut PRO can work as regular version of my Yalla Typeface.

Salas is a fun, chunky, slab serif omnicase display font. It's blocky and loud, so it can scream from Posters and Headlines. Think of a clown with poor hearing making a Skype call, he's shouting, but you like it. Anyway: it has over 300 glyphs, several variations on the standard alphabet and lots of those extra foreign features for sending international ransom notes. OpenType coded, it has various letter pairings that interlock automatically to create a more randomized, bespoke feel to your copy. “Greuceanu” is the the name of a brave romanian fairy tale character and his mission was to eliberate de Sun and the Moon that were stolen by some Dragon like creatures that in romanian folklore they are called “ Zmei”. It inspired me to create this decorative uppercase display typeface with strong influences from old cyrillic writing and also a touch of fun and geometrical construction explorations. Besides Extended Latin Support it includes also Cyrillic and Greek alphabets as you already can expect from most of DePlictis Types releases. For many decades, the fashion magazine “Vogue” featured superbly illustrated covers before photography became more commonplace. During the 1930s and 1940s those illustrations were accompanied by many creative styles of hand lettering for its monthly issues. The January, 1930 cover had the magazine’s name lettered in an Art Deco geometric monoline, which became the inspiration for Vagary JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A vagary [in a simple sense] is when something or someone changes in an erratic or unexpected way (as the wind’s direction or in a person’s mood or whim)… and thus seemed the fitting name for this type style.

A flower became crushed in the door frame of the studio (a fancy shed at the end of an overgrown garden)... pretty pale yellow stamens scattered on the floor... I sprinkled some on the scanner and arranged them into a light and airy font for springtime. There are two alphabets, both uppercase, but one with doubled uprights for variety, and to provide a hint of extra weight. I didn't want to distort the natural shapes, or make up any of my own, so some letterforms are pretty quirky, and some characters just weren't possible... but there's a hidden bunch of flowery and grassy ornaments.

Freehouse is a reinterpretation of the well-remembered Watney’s logo, a brewery and pub chain infamous for its poor quality beer and brutalist decor. In Design Research Unit’s corporate guidelines from 1966 the font is described as Clarendon Bold Expanded — however, this is not the case. Clarendon has square serifs, whereas the Watney’s font is rounder and friendlier. A fixture of the British high street landscape for decades, this digitisation adds a full international character set, numbers, punctuation and many other characters that did not exist in the original. A distressed version that evokes rough print on a wet beermat has also been developed.

History, as it's said, tends to repeat itself. The round-point pen lettering used in the 1920s logo and ads for Dodge Brothers cars (pre-General Motors) is an early predecessor to the techno type styles of the 1980s. Square in shape, with unique stylization to some letters, Jalopy JNL can cross the decades and be used for a 1920s period piece and still look fresh in an ad for computer parts. Rather than round out the inside lines of the characters to fully emulate the strokes of a lettering pen, the inside lines have straight intersections for the contemporary side of this font's design.

The design approach from this humanist sans-serif is much more simple and neutral than Lisboa Tamil (lacks the hook-head terminals). Latin transliteration characters were also included.
