The different fonts in the Why Square family are an extension of the designs begun in Zoran Kostic's Just Square family. Why Square's lowercase letters are all more condensed versions of Just Square's letters, and in some of the fonts, the uppercase letters are wider. The first five fonts are the different weights of Why Square (UltraThin, UltraLight, Thin, Light, and Regular). Here, all of the characters--both upper and lowercase--are more condensed versions of the geometric letters from the Just Square family. The next five fonts (UltraThin, UltraLight, Thin, Light, and Regular weights) include identical lowercase letters to those from the first five fonts in the family, but their capitals are considerably wider. These may be used as initials, either with the other fonts in the Why Square family, or with the Just Square family.

This unusual take on a typical woodtype typeface is based on a 1950s Stenso lettering template and, appropriately, takes its name from a small town in Texas not far from Dallas, locally noted for its grand Victorian homes.

Dulcinea is the title of Ramiro Espinoza’s in-depth look at Spanish Baroque calligraphy’s most extreme tendencies, and especially at some of those produced by the writing masters Pedro Díaz Morante and Juan Claudio Aznar de Polanco. These 17th and 18th centuries alphabets with their plentiful calligraphic flourishes represented a marked break with the harmonic and angular Renaissance Cancellaresca style. It was Morante who first introduced and popularized the use of the pointed quill in Spain, and although his famous text entitled “Arte Nueva de escribir” – first volume published in 1616 – contains alphabets that have much in common with traditional broad nib Cancellaresca calligraphy, most of the examples therein are outgrowths of the new models put forward by the Italian master Gianfrancesco Cresci. The writing’s swashes are complex and intricate, but at the same time they feature a profusion of defects. Many of them sometimes come close to ugliness. However, these pages contain an artistic essence that bears a relationship to the ironic and sometimes somber character of Spanish Baroque. That’s why the name of the font pays homage to “Dulcinea del Toboso”, the fictional beauty from Miguel de Cervantes’s ‘Don Quixote’, a work that reveals many of the period’s conflicts, such as the contrast between utopian ideals and reality, uncertainty and madness. But Dulcinea is far from being just a revival. Its forms are not careful tracings of the outlines of Morante and Polanco’s letters, nor are they attempts to reproduce them digitally. In fact, the author of the letters says that had the font been created that way it would have been too archaic to serve as acceptable contemporary typography. However, he believes that there are myriad interesting details that can be rescued and preserved, along with the playful spirit of the original. The work of designing Dulcinea consisted of combining original historical elements with the creativity and calligraphy of the font’s author in order to produce a modern typography that isn’t based on the same traditional sources as many recently created scripts fonts. Dulcinea offers attractive options for the setting of texts and headlines: abundant ligatures and swashes along with intricate alternate characters. It sophisticated forms make it an ideal option for women’s magazines, recipe books, lingerie products or perfume packaging.

This display stencil typeface is extension from Gazeta font family, where the letterform cuts are more mechanical without loosing their own natural structure. Italic versions are not available, only roman characters.

Merrivale is an ideal example of the benefits of keeping ones eyes open- it was inspired by the gilt-finished raised lettering on a late Victorian shopsign in Melbourne, Australia. The family of seven faces include upper and lower case forms, small capitals, all capital forms, and flamboyant display forms. Extensive Opentype features are incorporated. All faces are offered in incised forms inspired by the original lettering as well as in solid black filled forms. Thsee typefaces are wonderful for signage where either a period air or a dignified but legible feel are required. They also lend themselves to other display uses such as posters, book covers and so forth and are ideal for the title lines of certificates.

These six faces are interpreted from examples shown in Rob Roy Kelly's "American Wood Types" They are not merely scanned copies, but have been redrawn from scratch with various optical adjustments. Kelly points out that the true glory of the American Wood Types are the negative spaces, which are, in their dynamic active forms, the antithesis of the anemic flimsy letters produced by type foundries in the 19th century. The Alphabets Wood Types are designed with digital manipulation in mind. Stretch, curve and distort at will! These designs were released prior to similar revivals from Adobe. Each font has two full alphabets (one full height, one smaller) and numerals. However, certain points and accents will not be found.

Ashemore developed as a result of my visits to Barcelona, Spain and to Germany, followed soon after by a visit to Asheville, North Carolina. Blending the styles of art and architecture from these three areas may seem initially to result in an unusual formula, but the distinct and flamboyant style of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts style combined with the more strict rules of a sans serif transfer well into a beautiful and very usable blend of these individually eccentric forms. The resulting font retains the Art Nouveau and Craftsman style flavors, which shine through the typeface despite its geometric base. One of the font’s defining characteristics is the unique terminators of its C, G and S. This face’s texture and rhythm also moves well in longer texts. These and other features give Ashemore a restrained bohemian vibe that seems particularly appropriate for a coffee house or an art gallery. The Ashemore family has a full range of six weights from thin to black and includes condensed and extended options for a total of 36 fonts. The typeface also includes some unique OpenType alternates that make the superfamily even more versatile. Big Ballpen is a modern, slightly naive handwriting typeface, which has the feel of graffiti with its rough lines. First published in 1939 by Stempel, Renner Antiqua is a classic serif text typeface. Designed by Paul Renner, the father of Futura, this design stands out as strikingly different from his other designs. The letterforms are relatively compact and space saving and the strokes have a strong contrast to look as if made by a pen. This design is extremely distinctive and individualized, but without being overly distracting. Notice many of the small details such as the serifs on the uppercase C, E, and L and the bar at the top of the uppercase A. Also observe the special curve in the bowl of the lowercase b, the dot of the i, and the tail of the y. This design is wonderful for extended amounts of text at 10pt, but the subtle details will be fully appreciated when used larger for titles and display settings.

ITC Motter Corpus was designed by the Austrian type designer Othmar Motter in 1993 to combine the display advantages of a sans serif extra bold design with the legibility of a roman weight. The Motter Corpus is available in the weights regular and condensed regular. The capitals with their strong strokes display slight irregularities and natural looking outlines. When used in very large point sizes the tiny serifs become noticeable. Distinguishing characteristics of this typeface are the unusual design of the g with its upward reaching ear and that of the capital C, whose curve ends in an angular stroke in its upper third. Almost, but not quite, a sans serif, the typeface has diminutive serifs which, along with its modulated weight contrasts, make ITC Motter Corpus remarkable legible in display applications and will give text a nostalgic feel. A similar typeface is Linotype Bariton.
