-Fabulous, beautiful, friendly, talkative, sweet, caring, a little on the odd side, very desirable by many, good at almost everything- That's the definition of Fabiola according to the slang dictionary of americans. If you were you looking for something delicious, a font that covers a really wide range of uses and always looks amazing, Fabiola should be your choice. Although it may look as another of my scripts with juicy swashes, this time I explored in depth the pairing and interaction with capital letters for more unique results. Why? We are going through some crazy days where the number of people interested in letters is only growing. We see lettering everywhere: I can say that finally our field is shouting out loud; letters are THE protagonist more than ever. Hence the need of combining and pairing different styles is booming. Fabiola Script and Fabiola Caps were done in a way that they seem to need each other. There's nothing better than the above images to prove this. But, how does it work? Every cartoonist and hand letterer needs a pencil, a T-square and on and on. For digital lettering, books Gibon is an option. This handy toolkit helps you easily letter your comic strips, but even if you have nothing to do with cartooning, this bundle can simply add some comic book feel to your design or make some noise with layered sound effects. It was designed and produced during the years of the second World War, and unveiled in the summer of 1947 to celebrate De Roos's 70th birthday. In 1948, the first fonts produced were used for a special edition of the Dutch Constitution on which Juliana took the oath during her inauguration as the Queen of the Netherlands. To this day this typeface is widely regarded as De Roos's best design, with one of the most beautiful italics ever drawn. In contrast with all his previous roman faces, which were based on the Jenson model, De Roos's last type recalls the letter forms of the Renaissance, specifically those of Claude Garamont from around 1530, but with a much refined and elegant treatment, with stems sloping towards the ascending, slightly cupped serifs, a tall and distinguished lowercase, and an economic width that really shines in the spectacular italic, which harmonizes extremely well with its roman partner. This is my interpretation of Edel Grotesk – a “lost typeface” from circa 1914 produced by Johannes Wagner GmbH of Ingolstadt, Germany. PG Grotesque is definitely not a revival, or even a faithful reproduction of that typeface as I was unable to source enough accurate references. What I have done is take the essence and unique characteristics of that typeface and brought this forgotten gem right into the 21st century. The font series Andron MC introduces a new feature to the repertoire of the Andron family: middlecase glyphs (intermediate between upper- and lowercase) – and uncial letters. Middlecase glyphs reach a medium height compared to full caps height and lowercase x-height. However, ‘uncial’ means the historic transitional lettershapes of the medieval ages which have gained no status in the bicameral typographic system of modern times. In all three of the Andron MC fonts middlecase (“MC”) glyphs dwell on the lowercase positions. These are coined in uncial fashion in the MC Uncial and MC Medieval fonts but appear as capital glyphs in MC Capital. Compendium is a sequel to my Burgues font from 2007. Actually it is more like a prequel to Burgues. Before Louis Madarasz awed the American Southeast with his disciplined corners and wild hairlines, Platt Rogers Spencer, up in Ohio, had laid down a style all his own, a style that would eventually become the groundwork for the veering calligraphic method that was later defined and developed by Madarasz. After I wrote the above paragraph, I was so surprised by it, particularly by the first two sentences, that I stopped and had to think about it for a week. Why a sequel/prequel? Am I subconsciously joining the ranks of typeface-as-brand designers? Are the tools I build finally taking control of me? Am I having to resort to “milking it” now? Not exactly. Even though the current trend of extending older popular typefaces can play tricks with a type designer’s mind, and maybe even send him into strange directions of planning, my purpose is not the extension of something popular. My purpose is presenting a more comprehensive picture as I keep coming to terms with my obsession with 19th century American penmanship. Those who already know my work probably have an idea about how obsessive I can be about presenting a complete and detailed image of the past through today’s eyes. So it is not hard to understand my need to expand on the Burgues concept in order to reach a fuller picture of how American calligraphy evolved in the 19th century. Burgues was really all about Madarasz, so much so that it bypasses the genius of those who came before him. Compendium seeks to put Madarasz’s work in a better chronological perspective, to show the rounds that led to the sharps, so to speak. And it is nearly criminal to ignore Spencer’s work, simply because it had a much wider influence on the scope of calligraphy in general. While Madarasz’s work managed to survive only through a handful of his students, Spencer’s work was disseminated throughout America by his children after he died in 1867. The Spencer sons were taught by their father and were great calligraphers themselves. They would pass the elegant Spencerian method on to thousands of American penmen and sign painters. Though Compendium has a naturally more normalized, Spencerian flow, its elegance, expressiveness, movement and precision are no less adventurous than Burgues. Nearing 700 glyphs, its character set contains plenty of variation in each letter, and many ornaments for letter beginnings, endings, and some that can even serve to envelope entire words with swashy calligraphic wonder. Those who love to explore typefaces in detail will be rewarded, thanks to OpenType. I am so in love with the technology now that it’s becoming harder for me to let go of a typeface and call it finished. You probably have noticed by now that my fascination with old calligraphy has not excluded my being influenced by modern design trends. This booklet is an example of this fusion of influences. I am living 150 years after the Spencers, so different contextualization and usage perspectives are inevitable. Duddy is a “friendly” sans-serif typography designed by Eleonora Lana and the Letritas team. The shape of Duddy was created based on sketches that looked after carrying the concept of kindness as far as possible, keeping always in mind the readability and functionality of the font. In the stage of brainstorming, the team started listing things that were friendly to the touch or sight, such as a candy gum, or marshmallow, to become acquainted with the intended goal. Although slowly, as the letters were being created, the objects associated with the forms were not satisfactory, since when forming words a special personality of its own appeared. By reconceptualizing everything, the personality of the letter the team wanted to work with had to be redefined. Thus it went from "caramel" to "teddy bear", from "teddy bear" to "puppy" and from "puppy" to "dolphin". And Duddy is the perfect name for a dolphin. Duddy was a sound idea: friendly, intelligent, social. Once the concept was nailed, the design of graceful and “soft” shapes started. Almost chewable, almost huggable, as if composing words was a game. Duddy has a slanted version with "real italics". These italics are slightly more condensed than the regular version, in order to give it a different text texture. The typeface has 9 weights, ranging from “thin” to “heavy”, and two versions: "regular" and "italic". Its 18 files contain 729 characters with ligatures, alternates, small caps, oldstyle and tabular numbers, fractions, case sensitive, and unicase figures. Rahere Esoteric is a gothic-flavoured, quasi-Roman display font with an eccentric persona and more quirks than a Tim Burton film. A member of the extended Rahere typeface family, it’s the enigmatic cousin of Rahere Roman Display & Rahere Sans. This is a niche display font that doesn’t try to please everyone. Rahere Esoteric revels in its mystical aura, using a bewildering array of ligatures to magically transmute itself as characters loop, curl, jerk and strut, randomly connecting and disconnecting into words like a retro-futuristic steam train clattering along a disused railway track, challenging and delighting the reader at the same time. To add more sparkle, there are alternatives, inferior and superior caps plus a [Wicca] basketful of symbols, ornaments, weird faces and even a snake-infused ampersand. Whilst Rahere Esoteric has been designed primarily as an all-caps font, the lowercase slots contain small caps with corresponding numerals. However, because this is an arcane, unpredictable font, order and regularity are frowned upon, which means there are no tabular numerals – so company reports or accounts are a solid no! Unless they’re for the Golden Circle of Alchemists PLC or Gothic Blackstar Corporation. It is ideal for all things pagan, esoteric, alchemy, other-worldly or magic-related projects and particularly useful for music genres across the Gothic / Darkwave / Ethereal spectrum. What about legibility? Hey, look into my eyes: Esoteric is all about the mystique. If a secondary font is needed for the important stuff, I recommend its cousin, Rahere Sans, which pairs beautifully with this display font and is perfect for long passages or small text. The initial idea for Rahere Esoteric came about during a visit to Whitby, a small coastal town in Yorkshire, UK and famous for its inclusion in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. A Steampunk festival was in full swing and the narrow streets of the town centre were teeming with people adorned in a glorious fusion of clothing and accessories influenced by a love of 19th-century life, science fiction, horror, fashion and art. I was fascinated by the juxtapositions of colour, patterns, material and style – archaic mechanical Sci-fi, gothic, the American Wild West and romantic Victorian. But what intrigued me the most, somehow, all the disparate elements worked as a whole. Thus, like Frankenstein, this font jolted into existence. Cowling Sans AOE is a charming Art Deco architectural style typeface. It is the cleaned-up, refined revival and elaboration of a lettering design from “Lettering for Commercial Purposes” by Wm. Hugh Gordon published in 1918. What began as a basic character set of Capitals, lowercase, and two styles of ampersand has been expanded to a full character set including unlimited fractionals, superiors & inferiors, ordinals, tabular, proportional, and oldstyle figures, and an expanded language glyph set, all with a smallcaps and Caps to Smallcap set to match. This lettering style exudes the charm of its era with every word set in it by way of the small details that set it apart from other sans typestyles.

"VTF League" is a fully-kerned, hard working, 14-font athletic block display family. Its letterforms feature a synthesis of heavy verticals and lighter horizontals that create a steady visual rhythm, and chiseled terminals to help establish a competitive personality. Although developed for sports branding and similar projects, "VTF League" was inspired by the harmonized mix of sturdy, industrialized, no-nonsense typefaces and the brand uniqueness of local distilleries around Eastern Tennessee during a week-long moonshine tour in February 2018. As of July 2019, "VTF League" has been redeveloped to include a complete alphabet of uppercase, lowercase, and small cap alternates with 7 weights and oblique style variants for each. Enjoy!

Saveur Sans is inspired by art deco and French cafes. This display family has clean, simple letterforms that feel modern but at the same time have a retro, art-deco styling. This family can add a sophistication to any layout whether it be print or online. Saveur Sans is a great selection for headlines, logotypes and branding. it is an all-caps display family with some neat alternates including an alternate O and E that instantly give your copy that retro-deco look. The promos have been inspired by french food and design. This family is perfect for use in packaging and branding of food products as well as menus and restaurant or cafe branding.

The future is square! Well, at least according to Turbo Modul! Maybe the future is square, but it is also funky - just like Turbo Modul ... and its pretty unpredictable! Turbo Modul is loaded with alternative letters with arrows pointing in all directions, all made to pimp your designs! I've also added ligatures to substitute double letters, and there's a slight difference from caps and lowercase. Wow! That's a lot of different combinations! I tell you what ... I take a look at the posters I've made, and hopefully it will make you want to try out the font. I had a lot of fun doing the font, and maybe you will have a lot of fun using it! ;)
