Based on the popular Sofia Pro typeface, Sofia Rough is a multifaceted font family with differents eroded variations. Sofia Rough contains sixteen fonts and two eroded sub families. Smurrie means ‘sludge’ in Dutch. It is not an exact translation, but as good as I could find. The name refers to the rounded, blob-like shape of the glyphs. I think this font would look very good on posters, book covers and T-shirts. Smurrie is an all caps font, but upper and lower case differ and can be used together. Smurrie oozes with charm, fun and happiness and comes with a whole bunch of diacritics.

Mandarin font first appeared with the Type Founders of Chicago and is an interpretation of artistically drawn Asian brush calligraphy. The stylized Asian atmosphere is not created only by the forms of the figures but also by the very name of the typeface. A mandarin was a high official of the ancient Chinese empire. Alphabets like Mandarin font are often used for the menus, signs and advertisements of Asian restaurants as well as for businesses with Asian products.

My motivation for designing the Lalibela family (which is based on Bodoni) was to pay homage to Ethiopic script. The script has been around for about 3 000 years, but I took artistic licence to deviate from the original model and add personal touches. I chose Bodoni as a historical model because of its display value and not its text size use because the extreme contrast made it difficult to read at small sizes. A Modern typeface characterized by consistently horizontal stress, flat and un-bracketed serifs, and a high contrast between thin and thick strokes, were the final step in typography two-hundred-year journey away from calligraphy. The austerity, simplicity and greater contrast style was perfected.Contrary to all the refinements in Bodoni, I have revisited calligraphy with the font Lalibela that mimics Ethiopic Script. It was drawn with a much larger x height and less geometric than Bodoni for its primary use as a display font. For example, a lot of italic serifs were added to the roman face as well as 16 additional ligatures to obtain more a feel of calligraphy. I made the serifs thicker and bracket one side with straight steps obtaining a reduced contrast to withstand breaking up at smaller sizes.An additional variant, "Lalibela Alternate" was designed to provide an interesting mixing possibilities with the Bold face for more expressive headlines.

Red Tape is three fonts that were designed by sticking letters together with red tape. It makes for a wonderful makeshift set of fonts. And I really enjoyed sticking those letters together. Of course I did it on screen using bits and pieces of scanned red tape. Just use it as you like, I won't give you any red tape in how to use the fonts. »Red Tape« is since February 2012 on permanent display in the »German National Library« – next to the likes of »Bodoni«, »Garamond« and »Helvetica« – being part of the exhibition about type through the ages. The Valhalica typeface grew out of a project to design a modern mobile app for the ancient strategy board game Hnefatafl, also known as 'Viking Chess'. The typeface draws its inspiration from the ancient runic alphabets used by the Norse people, known as 'futharks'. Modeling its letterforms on the aesthetics of these futhark alphabets, alongside an appreciation of clean, contemporary typography, Valhalica is a highly legible display font that lends itself to big, bold headlines and logos with a Nordic tone.

Puchiflit is a typeface disguised as a pen script. I didn't create this typeface by importing the letters on paper and tracing them into a computer with a draw application. So I think it's a pseudo-pen script typeface. By the way, I used a famous Japanese maker's felt-tip pen as a reference for line widths. I thought, "Isn't this what it would look like if I wrote with this pen? I drew a line in the draw application while fantasizing about this.

BOXDON is an extra heavy expanded typeface which was especially designed for VERTICAL layout. Each shape looks like a box and has minimum graphical treatment to distinguish each character. It means that the counter space is not enough to use this typeface for small font sizes, however, for titles this typeface should give incredible effects. Twirrewyn is Frisian for ‘Whirlwind’. I have always liked the Frisian language; it’s like a crossover between English and Dutch. When I studied journalism in Zwolle (a city close to Fryslân) there were a lot of Frisian students and I did pick up a few words! Twirrewyn is a handmade font family: the fat version was made using a brush and ink; the light version was made using that same ink, but with a broken satay skewer instead of a brush. And yes, you have guessed right, we eat a lot of Satay! ;-)

Hyggemand is not a real word: it is a combination of Hygge (meaning ‘fun’ or ‘coziness’ in Danish) and Mand (which means man in Danish). Combined it means something like ‘Nice Man’. I just like the sound and look of this name, so if I offend Danish languages purists, then I apologise for this monstrosity! ;-) Hyggemand is a happy kids font that comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case glyphs. If you want the cute Huggeman face, you will find it as a stylistic alternate for the asterisk.
