Alt-Gotisch Verzierte is a typeface of decorative initials that is Victorian in style and bears a close family resemblance to the many ornamental tuscans cut throughout the nineteenth century by British foundries. Instead of the bifurcated terminals of the archetypical tuscan (see Figgins Tuscan by HiH or Stereopticon by Dan X. Solo), these letters display what Nicolete Gray might call a “wedge and bite” design -- as if they started with the wedge serif of a latin form and someone came along and took a perfectly round bite out of the wedge. We need not dwell on the lack of teeth marks. The calligraphic curls and flourishes are often graceful, sometimes a bit contrived, but always complex. There is a busyness that marks the style of the period. If you ever see an old photograph of a well-appointed Victorian parlor, you will recognize that same quality of busyness. Overdone is a word that frequently comes to mind. Alt-Gotisch Verzierte means “adorned or decorated old gothic.” The typeface is attributed by Alexander Nesbitt to an unidentified German foundry of the nineteenth century (Decorative Alphabets and Initials, Dover, New York 1987, plate 92). The designer is unknown. Our font is supplied with a lower case that is similar to the upper case, but is 15% shorter and is simplified by the omission of the decorative vines. For the lower case, alternate letters A, E, & T; and ligatures LE, OT & LY have been supplied. In addition, a few small decorative vines were planted here and there for optional use. An accented upper case is not part of the original design and is not here supplied. This design is also seen under the name “Sentinel” -- as always, it is worthwhile to compare the completeness of the character set and the faithfulness of the rendering. We believe you will agree that we provide a balance of quality and value that is unmatched in the contemporary marketplace. Alt-Gotisch Einfach is a simplified version of Alt-Gotisch Verzierte. The vine-less lower case of the Verzierte font is the upper case in Einfach. For a lower case for Einfach, the letters were further simplified by stripping away the three-dimensional outline, down to the bare bones and bites, as it were. Einfach, in fact, means “simple” or “plain.” It is interesting to note that this bare bones & bite lower case bears (I have a special license to use two homonyms in the same sentence) a striking resemblance to the 15th & 16th century ornamental letters from Westminster Abbey shown in Plate 47 of Alexander Nesbitt’s Decorative Alphabets and Initials (Dover, New York 1987).

Peter Schmidt, well-known designer from Hamburg, browsed in a fashion magazine on a return flight from the United States. At that time he was thinking about a logo for a philharmonic orchestra. In the magazine, he noticed some interesting typography. He removed the page from the magazine and sent it later to Peter Langpeter. That was the inspiration for the creation of the logo. Since Peter Langpeter really liked the classic aesthetics of the resulting letters, he developed a whole new alphabet of it. Initially, only capital letters. Now he has completed this exceptionally beautiful font.

Karol was designed in 2011 as a project in the MA in Advanced Typography from EINA/UAB, in Barcelona. It was born as text typeface inspired by the work of East European type designers. Two years later, Karol is ready for public release, in a collection of eight styles (four weights and matching italics) with high readability, strength and character. A few days before its publication, we received the news that Karol had been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence (Judges’ Choice) of the Type Directors Club. In the late 60’s, one of the best art publications in the country was Motive magazine, published (amazingly) by the United Methodist Church. Filled to the brim with poetry, essays, line drawing and woodcuts, it also featured some cutting-edge typography. Boxy/Code is based upon my memories of woodcut typography from that great magazine. Since Boxy/Code ’s lowercase consists of the uppercase’s negative spaces, it’s easy to combine the two with Layer Styles in Photoshop in order to achieve the effect I used in one poster above. It also works great if you use a well-known text as a background. This new version is totally redrawn and features all the Latin-accented letters. Uppercase consists of black capitals in boxes; lowercase features the negative spaces of those boxed capitals. Uppercase and lowercase line up exactly for 2-color effects.

The Morgan Project can be considered a big type family with ‘many styles’ or a set of different types that match with each other. For me it’s one typeface with different versions with deliberate and visible differences according to the propose to which each version was created. The design started in 2000 as a display type with the design of the Morgan Tower, to which more two display versions were added; Morgan Poster and Morgan Big — all together the make our: FTF Morgan Display Kit 1. All three versions consist only in uppercase with alternate letters in the lowercase and a set of special ligatures. Morgan Tower has four variants that differ in width/weight, Morgan Poster has six variants (often called styles), three weights in upright and oblique and Morgan Big has twelve, six weights in upright and oblique. Lately, the FTF Morgan Tex Kit 1 was added. Apropriate versions to use in text setting. Both versions, FTF Morgan Sans and FTF Morgan Sans Condensed share the same structure and character mapping. A one-time co-worker of mine sometimes used a fanciful inkpen-style script in display-lettering situations. I liked it a lot. "Phil," I says, "why not do the whole alphabet, maybe a few little dingbats, and I'll make a font." Well, one day he presented me with a stack of posterboard; he'd done some letters, all right -- hundreds of 'em. SK Cuber™ is an expanded monumental pseudo-pixel typeface. It is based on a strict grid that is not broken in any glyph. This makes the type more organic and consistent. The type's characters are monospaced, but they do not look ridiculous and do not cause discomfort as it usually happens. This could only be achieved by carefully working out each glyph. Carton is a font family whose origin comes from his Display version, which is made up of a parallelepiped in isometric projection on a large grid. Zagore (zɑːgɔːrɛ) is the name of a beautiful place in Bulgaria. There is no contrast between horizontal and vertical stems, typical for geometric fonts. Rotulo Variable is a contrasted sans family which combines the Thick & Thin signpainter's style and some 70s feeling in a huge font family with three axis: Width, Weight and Slant. A visit to an exhibition of Spanish movie posters by Jano was the beginning of Rótulo (Spanish for Sign) project. Classic thick & thin signpainter style was featured in many letterings of those posters, as it was a very common style in 60s and 70s Spanish design. Unfortunately, today very few Contrasted Sans are seen, something that was quite common years ago has fallen into disuse in favor of Helvetic monotony. Here is another classic design by Robert Hunter Middleton for the Ludow Foundry in 1940. Samson Classic is a very heavy display face with a wonderful medley of thick-and-thins. Developed just before World War II, this sturdy, chunky style gained popularity in newspaper advertising work. It appears as though it was created using a broad pen and retains the angled stroke endings. Goes great on certificates and diplomas where just a hint of calligraphy is appropriate. Samson Classic is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters including decorative ornaments for creating certificates have been added to this OpenType version.
