As the name suggests, Goldie is an old-style serif typeface designed for striking headlines. Goldie has strong rounded serifs and a soft touch to it. It suits well to movie titles, novel covers, posters and so on, wherever you need a certain classic feeling and the font itself to act as an illustration. Goldie Old Style is easy to use to create nice strong headlines with character. In addition it’s equipped with 230 interlocking Discretionary Ligatures, Swash Alternates and a selection of common accented characters that are scaled down, so that they match the height of the rest of the font with the accent marks. These smaller accented characters are set in uppercase Stylistic Alternates.

A “latin” alphabet modelled on the ethiopian Ge'ez script - an experiment that works. Amhara was created by transferring the typical forms of the Ethiopian Amharic script to the west European alphabet. Because Amharic is traditionally written with an expanded pen tip, it shows the typical ductus also characteristic of the uncial scripts of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. So this font »Amhara« has a somewhat sacramental effect. And, although the individual forms look foreign, the overall picture is strangely familiar. Armavir by Fontazy is an uppercase type-family consisting of three gradually distressed sub-families Armavir 01, Armavir 02 and Armavir 03 (each in Regular and Bold weights) and Shadow (also in Regular and Bold). Armavir is a sans serif font with a slight touch of handmade. Each typeface contains stylistic alternate version of vowels -A, -a, -E and -e, that converting uppercase font in unicase(-ish). Prior to 500 AD the 24-rune Elder Futhark was used in Sweden. From 500 AD until 800 AD there were many Futharks which were transitions from the 24-rune Futhark to one of the 16-rune Futharks. By the end of this period the 24-rune Futhark was completely out of use , and only 16-runes Futharks were in use. By 900 AD two different types of Shorttwigs-Futharks had been born. One was popularized in Norway and the other was used in the west (the British islands). By 1000 AD the adjustment of the runes to the Latin alphabet had begun, and several versions are found up until the Dalrunes, about 1700-1800 AD.

Zebrawood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, who also designed Rosewood, Ponderose and Pepperwood together. Like its relatives, Zebrawood also displays a kind of Wild West character. Its style can be traced back to the Toscanienne typefaces which appeared in advertisements and on signs at the end of the 19th century. Typical of this capital alphabet are the split serifs and robust base forms, which emphasize the typeface's decorative character. The Modesto Text Family is text in name only. It’s called Text because it has a Lower Case, and also to distinguish it from the rest of the Modesto clan. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baily Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. The Eixample project is inspired by modernist signage of various examples found in the Eixample neighbourhood in Barcelona. The name of each subfamily is related to its location or to specific elements of the original sign. Villa is the abbreviation for Carrer Villarroel (Villarroel Street), where the Villarroel Pharmacy has been displaying this sign since the first quarter of the twentieth century. The Eixample Villa typeface system consists of sturdy letters free of ornaments with an industrial aspect. Only the treatment of the curves borrows modernist features. Like the rest of the families in the Eixample series, Villa shows its origin as a display font, but it has been engineered to give good results at small sizes as well.

What comes to your mind if I say Architype, Geometric, Gaelic, and Uncial? An impossible combination of features? An unrealistic setup of tastes as weird as your music list? Or some part of a joke told by your favourite comedian? Just chill and stick to the idea that is possible. Gallos combines the conceptual historical elegance of the Uncials with the practical rationalism of the Geometric style. Moreover, this typeface is composed by two sub families: Gallos Uncial and Gallos Architype. The letters “M”, “N”, “W”, “a”, “m”, “n”, “r”, and “w” differ between these two models. The first one is related to both: The Uncial script aspect displaying the leaned “a” with a closed bowl, and the classical geometric style depicting more conventional uppercase and lowercase letters “m” and “n”. The Architype one is inspired by Paul Renner’s Architype model, thus the leaned “a” has an open counter, the “r” is composed by a stem and a dot, and the rest of the mentioned letters were built using square rational features. Both models are connected by classical Uncial features such as the curved stroke “e” and curved shaft “t”, and with Gaelic vibes which can be seen in uppercase and lowercase letters “K” and “X”. Also, the curved descender “g” and “y”, alongside the curved stem “z” connect really well with the rest of the system and provide more uniqueness to the Gallos type family. Without further ado, we say to you: let’s make Uncials popular again!

CA Capoli is a fine script typeface with a vintage touch. Perfect for illustrative titles or logotypes. It comes in two styles, Regular and Stroke. The inspiration came during our trip to Italy, where we took a short rest in a bar during a hot day. We discovered a simple ceramic ashtray on the table. The word “Nido” was inscribed in a typeface that looked like it dated back to the 1950s. We made some investigations about the word, its meaning and origin but it still remains a big mystery. Was it the name of a hotel or a restaurant or some vintage Italian cigarettes? We don’t know. We were so amazed about the design of the logo that we decided to create a typeface out of it. A sophisticated endeavor because we just had four letters. How could the rest of the letters – if it ever existed – have looked like? Our hypothesis is CA Capoli. A typeface with a full Central European character set and some nice alternative letters to chose from. When we thought about “Nido” and its possible derivation of hotel business, we felt like creating a small side project for this typeface, a brand for a fictional hotel called Hotel Capoli with business cards, letterheads, a reception book, key fobs and embroidered patches for the service dress of the hotel service stuff. The Hotel Capoli is located at the wonderful beach of Cape Arcona on the fictional country of Arcona Islands where our type foundry is located.

Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

Echelon is based upon 1970s Eastern European ‘pipe-style’ typefaces. This style of Communist consumer typography came from what, at the time, seemed like a bizarre mirror universe: Existing alongside the West, similar-but-different, essentially unknowable. Even though the letterforms had the same historical origins as their Western equivalents, they also had their own bizarre fashionable/unfashionable aesthetic. The parallels between the surveillance practices of the Soviet Union and those of today’s Western governments informed the naming of this typeface. Echelon is the codename for a massive international surveillance system that collects and processes data from communications satellites. It can eavesdrop on telecoms and computer systems, it can track bank accounts. It can record and store information on millions of individuals.

I wanted to capture a sense of California with this font - generous, warm, open, bold and sunny - all this imagery is captured in Santa Cruz. One look at the font Wanted brings to mind swinging saloon doors, double shots of whiskey and sheriff's badges. It belongs to the so-called Italienne typefaces which began to appear at the beginning of the 19th century. The distinguishing characteristic of such typefaces is the robustness of its serifs, which exceeds that of the base strokes. Wanted looks almost as though it were stamped on paper. Small white flecks appear in some of the strongest black strokes just as they would in a stamp which did not get quite enough ink...or are they perhaps the work of a sharp shooter? Wanted is best for short headlines and perfect for anything which should have the look and feel of the Wild West.

This antique-aged version of Monkton can be used to imitate old letterpress printed documents such as old English text. The rough edges resemble ink spread on paper to give an old look. The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters.

My latest book production group is quite conservative. I discovered my need for a pair of headline fonts with the same vertical metrics which are looser and more lively. Since the serif family is Biblia Serif, and the Sans family is Draetha [which is Welch for preach], Araldo [which is Italian for herald] makes sense to me. Narrow has my normal set of Opentype features with small caps, small cap figures, and the rest of the figure sets. Bold is too heavy for small caps, without messing with the metrics. So, it has the normal figure sets, plus a decent set of discretionary ligatures. They both work well, and are meeting my need for a headline family to add to the book production group.

This font is based on the popular and timeless Caslon design and was carefully digitized from the pages of an early 19th century book. I was excited to see some unique design treatments of characters such as the lower case italic 'p', the question mark, and various swash caps that I had never seen before. During the conversion process, I made sure to preserve the worn look of faded ink on old paper by maintaining a subtle level of decay and opacity with each character. For missing characters not found in the book, I created new characters that were faithful to the style of the rest of the family. There's something satisfying about tweaking to perfection a typeface based on the particular style of lettering applied to a particular kind of paper by a particular human hand. One day, in pursuit of this curious sense of satisfaction, I sat down with a porous pad of lined note paper and printed out the alphabet with a ballpoint pen. I found particularly interesting the bulbous ends of the strokes where the ink soaked in. I couldn't help myself: I drew out the rest of the character set, scanned, hand-traced, and -- as with all 3IP font designs -- manipulated every glyph to an obsessive degree. Named it Cedar Street, after a favorite address of mine. Full release has a single medium weight with a thorough character set.
