Having spent all of my teenage years in the 90s, it's no surprise that this very particular decade resonates so deeply in me. As a graphic designer, I still think the strongest visual languages of the last 50 years or so come from that time. Bold aggressive attitude is what most people remember from those designs. What they seem to forget—or, rather, to have completely ignored—is that some incredibly elegant and subtle styles emerged from those years. It still amazes me how they reflected so well the period in which they were conceived, taking style construction to the next level. Riff is a natural development of some of my thoughts about the 90s. Mixed with a very contemporary feel, it embodies several idiosyncrasies I absorbed over years of exposure to favorite design pieces, fonts, music, films and other cultural products that share the same spirit.

Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. The letters in this font are made by chopping bits from footprints. Individual letters are sometimes very hard to decipher, but when put together as words they are usually readable. In Pedestrisan-Regular, the original version of this font, the upper-case letters have toes on the top the lower case letters have toes on the bottom. All the feet with letters are right feet. The upper case and lower case do not mix. In 2020 two alternate versions were created. In Pedestrian-Alt all toes are on the top but the lower-case letters are left feet. In Pedestrian-AltTwo all toes are on the bottom with the upper-case letters being cut from left feet and the lower case from right feet. Robofan is a vintage Open Type font based on the logo of reconfigurable robots (toys and characters) from the mid 1980s. The typeface was conceived when looking at the author’s own collection of Transformers, he noticed many basic drawing and spacing problems, missing characters, incorrect accent shapes and a lack of proper rhythm in the typeface used in the newest toy’s packaging, mistakes that didn't happen in the toys back in the 80s. These mistakes were so evident that the author decided to look back at the original lettering from the 80s to capture the original spirit of the Transformers. Frederic W. Goudy designed three weights of this friendly-looking sans serif font from 1922-1929 for Lanston Monotype in the United States. Goudy was attempting to impart freedom and personality to the sans serif form at a time when geometric sans serifs, such as Futura, were gaining rapid world-wide popularity. Nami, the Japanese word for wave," is the latest collaboration between Adrian Frutiger and Linotype's Type Director, Akira Kobayashi. This typeface family is the most humanistic sans serif design ever to come from Adrian Frutiger, and it has an interesting twist: lapidar alternates that may be surfed through with the help of OpenType-savy applications. Adrian Frutiger began the design that would blossom into Nami during the 1980s. Although it would not be produced during the 20th century, it was quite forward thinking. Dignus was inspired in two clever and famous typefaces: Bank Gothic and Microgramma. Bank Gothic designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF in 1930. Microgramma typeface designed by Alessandro Butti and Aldo Novarese for Nebiolo in 1952. Even though the name seems not to tell much, Indecise shows a clean and coherent design. The shapes of the characters reference the Latin typefaces that were promoted by great figures like Enric Crous-Vidal and José Mendoza y Almeida in the 50s. Indecise uses the body of incise typefaces and gets rid of the subtle terminals for the strokes. It is a high-contrast sans divided into 5 elegant subfamilies, which use different widths. From the condensed version to the extended one, the family includes 50 fonts counting upright and italic. This collection of widths make for many possible combinations of styles. Indecise is a humanist typeface, it puts geometry apart and embraces the calligraphic gesture. A set of original ornamental symbols was designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed to ParaType in 2007. The name was inspired by the famous book “Champ Fleury” by Geoffroy Tory (1529) but the theme of blooming meadow was embodied much more literally. Antoinette Monogrammes is a monogram font based on old embroideries in the early 20th century by Janon Co. This font includes Upright script capitals and Normal slanted script capitals and 24 fancy frames. By combining each letters and frames, you can make your own monogram. Snuggles began as a set of hexagons and hour-glass shapes that fit together. Letters were formed from these shapes with effort made to preserve as much as possible the original outlines. The result is two sets of letters that by themselves are awkward and misshapen and that only look good when mixed together. The OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature automatically alternates the sets in computer programs that support this feature. Snuggles-Lower replaces the letters of Snuggles-Regular with lower-case shapes, but without ascenders or descenders, and the results are jarring. Several of these lower-case shapes (D, N, T, W, and Y) are available as OpenType stylistic-set alternatives in the Snuggels-Regular font. Both Snuggels-Regular and Snuggels-Lower have light versions. Snuggels loves to be noticed so it likes to be large and it considers foolish anyone who would use it as body text.

It is a peculiar style of lettering—which was originally inspired by the Sachplakat (object poster) work of Lucian Bernhard—and adapted for hot metal in 1908 by Heinz Hoffmann. 100 years ago, the style became a workhorse of the German printing industry. Niedermann Grotesk is an updated variant, referencing the original poster art, each letter carefully drawn with an old brush. Bumpy, bold and blunt—with a suite of alternate characters and a few dingbats—Niedermann Grotesk is perfect for advertising, packaging, poetry, art, protests and retro homage.

Ondine is one of the early typefaces of Adrian Frutiger. It looks as though it were written with a broad tipped pen, however, Frutiger actually cut the forms out of a piece of paper with scissors. The forms of Ondine are reminiscent of the humanist period, the high point of the Italian Renaissance text typefaces of the 15th century. This movement was centered in Florence, the base of the Humanist movement overall, and the home of a famous type school of the time. The main goal of the educated writers was to faithfully recreate the writing of the admired literary works, whose aesthetic was as important as their content. Ondine displays a regular and open character. Texts set in this typeface give the impression of being hundreds of years old. Ondine should be used in point sizes of 12 and larger and is best for short texts and headlines.

Eurostile Next is Linotype's redrawn and expanded version of Aldo Novarese's 1962 design. This new version refers back to the original metal types and to its mid-century modern aesthetic of squarish characters and subtle curves. Eurostile Next brings back the gentle curves, which were lost in other digital versions, therefore regaining the spirit of the original design and its somewhat softer demeanor. The family has been greatly expanded, now consisting of five different weights: ultra light, light, regular, semibold, and bold. Along with the regular width, all weights also have extended and condensed versions. Stylistically, Eurostile Next is well suited for designs in the fashion of the 50's and 60's, yet it still has a remarkably new and contemporary feeling. New Kakuji is designed from the Kakuji style of characters originating during the Edo period of Japan. New Kakuji has expanded the historical character set to include the surnames from the ancient Chinese text: Hundred Family Surnames, as well as the most common surnames in Japan, in addition to many other historically and culturally significant words, going well beyond the scope of characters that were used in the Edo period. No other font has expanded the character set of the Kakuji Style to the same extent as New Kakuji. A Latin alphabet expansion inspired by the old Kakuji style has also been included for western audiences and designers. New Kakuji contains over 500 Chinese/Japanese characters along with over 200 additional Latin characters or symbols. The solid and blocky style of New Kakuji is ideal for seal designs or other branding designs and should be used at larger point sizes.

DF Korolev is a 72 weight geometric sans serif family based on lettering by an anonymous Soviet graphic designer from the propaganda displays at the Communist Red Square parade in 1937. It has been named in honor of Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov, or Korolev, considered by many to be the father of practical astronomics. Rational and robust, it is also elegant and refined. Tracings done in Illustrator over a photograph featuring this type pinned down some of the basic character shapes. These were then imported into FontLab, where the full glyph complement was developed. The lower-case has been designed from scratch, and adheres to the structural logic of the uppercase as closely as possible. The discovery of the Rosetta stone in 1799 provided an incredible breakthrough in deciphering the hieroglyphs, however there continues to be conflicting opinions on the literal translation of both the phonetic and ideographic symbols. As such, the interpretation provided in this manual represents an assembly of the most popular transcriptions. This series contains 62 assorted gods and deities as well as a few well known kings or pharaoh's from the New Dynasty. It is important to note that most of the gods and deities were represented in many different forms throughout the centuries and regions of Ancient Egypt, and these are but some of these representations. The typography on a 1964 children’s activity book published by Whitman entitled “Build with Stencils” was in a bold, condensed design. The only problem was that the ‘rails’ [the parts that divide a letter into stencil pieces] were too narrow and would disappear at smaller point sizes. Widening the ‘rails’ just a bit greatly improved the appearance of the stencil characters. Play Day Stencil JNL is now available in both regular and oblique versions. In its day, the Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin published dozens of activity books for children, including a number of them with stencils. The company was a division of Western Publishers from the early 1900s through the 1970s, but went through a number of sales and name changes. Currently [as Whitman once again] it is owned by Anderson Press, and is known for its line of coin folders and books on coin collecting.

I created this font in 2016 with the name “Burtons”, and now here I am turning it into “Badhorse”. Knoedel is a display typeface with three front-weights: light, regular and bold. Although a conjunction of different styles were a reference during the design process; the art deco style left a more noticeable influence in the final design. Knoedel, also has clear references to geometric and slab serif fonts. The design is intended to be applied on headlines or short text fragments. Knoedel offers full coverage for all languages using Latin alphabet: whole Europe, America, Oceania and on a big number of African and Asian countries. Besides the standard ligatures, Knoedel, additionally, has more than 200 discretionary ligatures and a generous number of borders and ornaments. Knödel (Knoedel) is a traditional dish from Austria and the southeast of Germany; made of dumplings of different ingredients usually boiled in salted water. It is not high-end cuisine but still, it accomplishes its aim of soothing hunger.

Patrima is a contemporary typeface with roots in the past. Specifically in the late nineteen hundreds where decorative type applications were en vogue and dimensional aspects and shadings where heavily used. Patrima takes simplified cues from these designs to make the typeface contemporary and versatile. Its base is a squarish Sans which expands through diagonal hatching to a three dimensional body. The hatching is wide enough for screen applications down to 24pt while remaining detailed for decorative purposes in larger sizes. Patrima’s different styles can be layered for chromatic results or used – complementary – alongside. As a decorative typeface it lends itself to display applications and eclectic logo designs, it brings a vintage touch to any branding project and elevates contemporary editorial layouts. Patrima comes with a set of catchwords which enrich its typographic texture even further. They are easily accessible through OpenType’s Discretionary Ligatures feature.

Ceebo is a friendly sans-serif, which show some aspects of a humanist and grotesque typeface. It retained more details of writing and got some forms and characteristics of an italic. The font contains some alternative glyphs. It also contains some ligatures and discretionary ligatures. In addition, there are adjusted figures and additional character for uppercase letters, lowercase letters and small caps, which react by OpenType-Feature. The font was designed to stay legible also in small sizes: beside as possible open counters, a tall x-high, distinct vents and cuts, it especially are the details of the glyphs which make it discernable. The regular weight is slightly thinner than other sans-serif fonts, moreover the diacritics and small glyphs were designed for small sizes by taller and more open forms. The resulting “ruggedness” is mellowed by half-rounded stems and pointed stem ends.
