Slik is a type family developed with packaging in mind. The font, Arnold Boecklin, appeared in 1904 with the font foundry Otto Weisert. Traces of the floral forms of the Jugendstil can still be seen in this typeface. Alphabets of this type were mainly meant for larger point sizes, as on posters. A decorative feel was much more important than legibility, and Arnold Boecklin was of particular importance to the book design of the Jugendstil movement. Atwin is a modern remake of Franco Grignani’s Gemini. It is inspired by the unusual forms of the MICR numbers on bank cheques. Strangely rounded rectangles make the glyphs appear unfamiliar; an angular but also blobby design that disrupts and breaks away from tradition. Good in display sizes. Kettering 205 is a geometric slab-serif with Art Deco influences, such as lowered crossbars on many characters, and a crossed W. It includes old style non-aligning (lower case) numbers, both proportional and tabular as well as accented characters for Central European languages. It’s a highly individual looking font, but retains good legibility coupled with striking looks as a display font. The Kettering 205 family comprises of six weights and is closely related to Kettering 105, its less Deco flavoured cousin.

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The wealth of vintage hand-lettering styles found in a 1941 edition of the Speedball® Lettering Pen instruction book has allowed Jeff Levine to re-draw a number of them in digital format for today's designers. As with other fonts in the Eckhardt Series of sign painter-inspired styles, this font is named in honor of Jeff's good friend Albert Eckhardt, Jr. Al was quite the talented sign writer, and ran Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing.

Just like a nice breakfast, Kitchen Stink is a great way to start the day! :) You may already have guessed that the fontname is the result of a wordplay. Sometimes it's funny how a single letter can completely change the meaning of a word. In this case! With this font, you are dealing with a gentle mixture of a basic handwritten font, a comic font and oldschool grafitti! The result is this steady, sometimes a bit off, but legible crunchy handwritten font!

Cutlass was just for fun. A year ago or so [2009, maybe], someone on typophile showed a scan of the word "Ciruelo". I liked it. Those were the only letters I had and no one ever came up with the name of the original font that I saw. It doesn't matter as I went far afield as I designed, as usual. It's just a swashbuckling bit of fun. OpenType 476 Glyphs from my usual set minus the superior and inferior figures. Enjoy!

Inspired by the iconic modernist letterforms in the poster for Stephen Sondheim's 1972 musical Company, Another Hundred People is a gleeful set of solid geometric glyphs — as though a set of Colorforms decided to express itself in words. In addition to its lowercase and caps (which don't share a baseline with the lowercase, but hang below it), Another Hundred People has solid alternates (for those who don't like the divided letterforms) and overlapping ligatures! This typeface was drawn to create short headlines (quickly) for one of my projects (a set of illustrations featuring The Evil Rat, imagined character). Each character (here I mean "glyph") has it's own personality, mostly evil one (jokingly) — that is why the font is called "The Monsters". The font was drawn on paper, then scanned and traced. It has both Latin and Cyrillic sets, since it was used with both. Monsters are good for short notes of comic or ironic style.

Sheet music for the 1910 composition "Good-By Betty Brown" has its title hand lettered in a thick and thin, condensed sans serif design reminiscent of lettering found in later comic strips and books of the 1930s and 1940s. Transcending both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, Funny Papers JNL gets its name from the slang reference Americans of the early 20th Century gave the Sunday comics pages in their local newspapers, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Open, outline or inline faces became very popular in the 1940's. By removing the usual weight, a clear-cut letterform is achieved. In Caslon Open Face, the right-hand strokes are accentuated, providing a slightly three-dimensional effect. The ascenders of Caslon Open Face are large and the overall design of this version does not relate to Caslon 3 Roman. This Caslon Open Face font is good for personal stationery, or sentences where a decorative but distinguished result is sought.

Hibagon is the Japanese equivalent of the Yeti from the Himalayas, or Bigfoot from North America. It is usually sighted on Mt. Hiba (Hiroshima prefecture), hence the name. I have never seen Hibagon myself, even though I have visited Hiroshima several times. Hibagon font is a nice, handpainted, all caps font with a mythical feel to it. It probably won’t scare you, but it will look good on anything that needs a bit of brushwork, or a bit of roughness.

Arab Brushstroke is a graceful, upright German calligraphic script. At first glance, Arab Brushstroke does not seem to have much in common with Arabic calligraphy. Yet the gracefulness of its letterforms remind the viewer that calligraphy is a global passion, one that can be seen in the Arab world as well. Perhaps that feeling was the inspiration behind this typeface's name? In any case, Arab Brushstroke is a good choice for use in headlines, as well as other display applications.
