The digital font Technotyp is based on the hot metal typeface created by the German typographer and type designer Herbert Thannhaeuser (1898-1963) for the former East German type foundry Typoart in Dresden. In the typography book ‘Der Schriftsetzer’ (Fachbuchverlag, Leipzig, 1952), by Paul Fritzsche, this absolutely beautiful slab serif design is presented in all its variations. Fritzsche remarked that – because of its rather condensed form and its relatively long ascenders – the 'Werkschrift' of the Technotyp (comparable with our 'Regular') seemed to be very well suited to serve as a text face, and recommended for this purpose that the face be cut for the composing machine. However, this never happened and the entire Technotyp family was made available for hand composition only. This is finally changing and being remedied for good now: URW++ proudly presents the new digital version of this really charming font family with its distinct flavor of the 1950s, adding it to the other digital renditions of Herbert Thannhaeuser fonts at URW++, namely Garamond No. 4 and Magna. The original Typoart family had an italic style for the light version only. Barbieri is a casual sans type family, based on a German lettering style from the 1960s. The original hand-drawn alphabet was used in a rather peculiar edition of Der Barbier von Bagdad, an opera composed by Peter Cornelius. Our efforts to identify the cover designer have been, so far, unsuccessful. As fans of informal typography and popular lettering styles, we thought these few thin letters deserved a re-incarnation as a complete type family. Andrés Torresi and Marta Sánchez Marco were in charge of the production work. Now Barbieri has 6 weights suitable for packaging, posters, and music covers. It resembles a certain 'Americana' spirit, though with a Germanic twist.

Created by Swedish designer Bo Berndal in 1999, Linotype Dala Text can best be described as a softer, friendlier blackletter. Blackletter refers to typefaces that evolve out of Northern Europe's medieval manuscript tradition. Often called gothic, or Old English, these letters are identified by the traces of the wide-nibbed pen stroke within their forms. Linotype Dala Text most resembles the fraktur type of blackletter. Fraktur types were popular text faces in Northern Europe until the 20th century. Inspired by Swedish folklore, this fraktur is much softer and rounder than most examples. Its connection to the Scandinavian folkloric tradition makes Linotype Dala perfectly suited for such texts as fairy tales, medieval stories, and other things that might appeal to a child's sense of adventure. To strengthen the medieval fairy tale look, use Linotype Dala Text together with other elements of the Linotype Dala family: Library's Linotype Dala Pict and Linotype Dala Border. After its release I came to think that there should be other fonts of this design that would enrich the variety of choice.
