Ever since I first designed Ellida in 2005, that elaborate script in the tradition of the 18th-century English calligrapher George Bickham and the 19th-century American calligrapher Platt Rogers Spencer, I wanted to add a very high contrast cut to the family. I finally did so. But the result looks so much different to Ellida that I had to give it another name, hence "Eloise". Eloise should actually be written with a 'i' that has double dots, but that would be difficult for international use. Eloise is a beautiful first name not only for French girls. Pronounce: Ay-low-eese. If I would have had a daughter, I would have called her "Eloise" (with double dots!). But instead I have two phantastic sons, so I never got the chance to use it. My eldest son Sam always wanted to visit Japan and he has been saving up for a ticket for years now. We should have traveled there this year, but due to the pandemic, that was impossible. We’re now trying to go next year. Sam and I did make some kind of itinerary and I told him how we were going to get around, as I have been to Japan many times. I told him about the Shinkansen trains, the cute Tram in Nagasaki and the immense subway system in Tokyo. One of the lines in Tokyo is the so-called Yamanote Circle Line, which I have used on numerous occasions. A new font name was born and it stuck to this particular font! Subway Circle is a 100% handmade font. It is rounded, slightly slanted and comes with a sunny disposition. I am sure that, when you use it, you will find your 生きがい… ;-)

Kenwyn is a bold, geometric, Egyptian style slab-serif display font. It comes in two variations — Single Dot and Double Dot — each with an accompanying Stencil variation. Essentially a blend of circles and squares, Single Dot features a circular counter at the centre of each character, while Double Dot uses a lower and upper circle. Although the two variations are similar in principle, the results are visually quite different.

Looking back on my production to date, neither so little nor so large, it does not come as a surprise to find myself now introducing Lady René. A brief review of my career would read as follows: graphic designer graduated from Buenos Aires University, a 10-year professorship in Typography in the same institution, an illustrator in the making. For almost 15 years now my work has focused on the design of editorial pieces, predominantly books and CD sleeves. Typography proper has always been central to my research projects. All my obsessions eventually embodied as much the search for a perfect, spotless text as for a daring and provoking one. In my view, "how-to-say-something" ranks highest amongst a graphic designer’s responsibilities. It was in this vein that I called in the written word to illustrate, to draw, to narrate. Why not reverse the saying and proclaim that “a word is worth a thousand images”? If so, one single word could trigger endless meanings, associations, ideas, and memories in every reader’s mind. Language, we know, has a strong power and is a living expression of a culture. In my illustrations, letters and drawings reunite in one synergy said and unsaid, the finiteness of the message and the freedom of the free reading. And this is how and when, Lady René, my first born type font sees the light of day conceived out of a love of illustration and a reverence for the written word, recalling the whimsicality of the handmade drawing and reflecting its sensitive, warmth and spontaneity. Enabled by the characteristics of Open Type and the hard, outstanding work of designer Ale Paul, Lady René succeeds in composing texts in a simple, organic way by means of its contextual and stylistic alternates, swash characters, ligatures and connecting words. Charlie’s BarBQ JNL is Jeff Levine’s homage to some great Texas Bar-B-Q - cooked by a Cuban immigrant - served in South Florida... A true American success story, but with a sad ending. Like its feline namesake from Kipling’s “Jungle Book”, Baghira has an elegant, smooth appearance and an impressive set of large, sharp teeth. Sausage is unapologetically bold and bulbous. Influenced by magnetic fridge letters, hot dogs and 70s phototype fonts, it is retro, but not cloyingly so. It was a deliberate plan to make Sausage only a single style typeface. The freedom that not having to think about how the font should relate to other weights allowed me to push the glyphs to places they might not otherwise have been able to go. There isn't a single corner in the entire font, and you'd be hard pushed to find a straight line. Red Tape is three fonts that were designed by sticking letters together with red tape. It makes for a wonderful makeshift set of fonts. And I really enjoyed sticking those letters together. Of course I did it on screen using bits and pieces of scanned red tape. Just use it as you like, I won't give you any red tape in how to use the fonts. »Red Tape« is since February 2012 on permanent display in the »German National Library« – next to the likes of »Bodoni«, »Garamond« and »Helvetica« – being part of the exhibition about type through the ages. The handmade title on the cover for the 1939 edition of “A Wand’ring Minstrel” [from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado”] was rendered with a round nib lettering pen in an Art Deco style. This type design is now available as Cover Letter JNL in both regular and oblique versions. However, the font’s name is a bit of a pun, as it has nothing to do with cover letters, but rather the lettering found on the cover of the sheet music.

I made this font using my index finger and Chinese ink. I thought the ink would come off easily, but I can tell you: it doesn’t. I have been walking around with a black stained finger for a week now and I do get strange looks from people every so often… Fingerfood, of course, is hand made. It is a rather playful font - all caps, but lower and upper case differ and like to mingle. Comes with a full diacritics palette.

We don't mean to gloat, but we have to say that it gives us immense, malicious pleasure and joy to supplant other popular germanesque letterforms with this, remarkably superior font.
