I fell in love at the age of twelve in Wales, recalls Bernard Philpot. "My father brought me to a small graveyard in the Welsh hills to show me two headstones carved by the great Eric Gill. I instantly fell in love with the beauty of the carving and the perfection of the letterforms. I still go back to marvel at these works of art." However, the ITC Bolthole™ design, Philpot's first commercial typographic endeavor, is quite unlike the works of Eric Gill that first captured his heart. Bolthole is a craggy sans serif with a definite grumpy attitude. It's not terribly legible, and, if more than a few words are set in the design, it's not very readable. To round out its cranky personality, Bolthole does not like to be set in small sizes. Like Cheez Whiz® and bullfights, you either love or hate this typeface. But whichever emotion dominates, there is no denying that Bolthole has a personality to be reckoned with - one with ample magnetism to ensure reader attraction. If used to set brief blocks of display copy, the typeface makes a powerful statement. Bolthole was originally designed to complement a whimsical ad for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As Philpot recalls, "although the ad didn't win any awards, the type attracted some very positive comments for its original look and feel." Philpot studied graphic design and typography at the London School of Printing, and soon after graduation found himself working in a large advertising agency in London. Fantastic ML is an exuberant Art Nouveau font. It was originally released as “Modern Style” by Fonderie G. Peignot & Fils, Paris, France sometime before 1903. Since “Le style moderne” was the generic French name for Art Nouveau, it is possible that someone decided a less generic name was needed. The typeface became known as Fantastic. Compared to conventional text letters, it is just that. Fantastic has a whimsical, architectural feel. The typeface reminds me of a cross between Hoffmann’s Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. The letterforms themselves are similar to those by Ludwig von Zumbusch on the cover of “Jugend” in March, 1896, but with the addition of serifs. Fantastic ML is a decorative, all-cap font intended for display use and functions best at 18 points or larger. There are a total of 306 glyphs. In addition to the standard 1252 Western Europe Code Page with character slots up to decimal position 255, there are glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. However, some older applications may only be able to access the Western Europe character set (1252). The zip package includes two versions of the font at no extra charge. “Nasser” is a Kufic modern Arabic typeface. It is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. Consequently, “Nasser” Typeface was designed for eternizing the memory of my late father. He was the person who taught me how to like arts, literature, and languages. Leroy is a font family of 5 members designed from geometrizing Roman and Gothic skeletons. Its purpose is to provide optimal reading of titles and paragraphs with strong mechanical flavor. Because of this, its variables are designed to sort information in media such as labels, signs and industrial atmosphere packaging related with the Soviet Union’s fonts in 1920. This idea matured white horizontal lines superimposed on alphabets drawn with an ancient architectural team known as “Leroy K & E Controlled Lettering System”. Then that evolved into a family concept unifying its proportion to the same X height for its members, resulting in a versatile type system. Therefore, Regular and Bold variables have low contrast between thick and thin strokes. Its upstream and downstream are extremely short, generating a suitable interline that clogs the vertical area. Its overall width equal to its X height, supports its tight spacing that compacts the horizontal area. Therefore, the variant with black caliber has plenty of contrast between thick and thin strokes. The light variable has a “blind” effect radiating light halos, ideal to propose hierarchies and combinations with orthogonal projection. In that sense, Leroy’s modular character reminds constructivist ideology merged with typographical variants suitable for graphic design with geometric look. To achieve this, I studied the softening of forms and counter blocks into a typographical system specially designed for composing useful information to attract attention. In that sense, the dingbats were obtained through a careful process of research and testings done with drawings that provided full and empty visual strategies that with the passage of time helped to forge the major decisions of a metamorphosis from industrial tools, birds and humans from pictogram mixing various genres.

Preta, portuguese for a very pure kind of black, has its name very related to its concept: I wanted to make the fattest/darkest script ever. People who follow my work may notice its forms are very related to works of my past (1) but this time the challenge was to be very cautious with the white spaces between letters. Not only I followed some rules and ductus of the copperplate style of calligraphy but also I took a lot of inspiration in posters of the early Art Nouveau (specially in Alfred Roller of the Vienna Secession) where letters forms looked like black squares if not looked from a close distance. With Preta, I wanted to achieve that same idea of “darkness” and thanks to the always welcomed question -what if?- the font grew a lot. The result is a very fat font, that looks delicious. Due to possible customer needs, I designed Preta Small, so it can be used in smaller sizes. Preta Ao Sol (which literally means under the sun!) is a style with those lovely tiny details to give the sensation of bright. Preta Ao Sol Solo was made to be used as a layered font with Preta. Finally, Preta Capitals serves as a company for Preta. Hope you enjoy the font as much as I did when designing it: The fact that it’s full of alternates, swashes, ligatures and swirls makes it really pleasurable at the moment of using it. Fulgora is a sort of ‘calligraphic typography’ or ‘typographic calligraphy’, depending on the point of view. Inspired by late-medieval Bâtarde and Civilité blackletter styles, the Kannada and Sinhala writing systems from Southern India, Celtic uncials, and diverse vernacular Mexican scripts, Fulgora was created straight from pen on paper as a personal calligraphic style where fantasy in the chief ingredient. The idea to take it to the digital realm came later, as an extension of the creative process. To this end, originals for each character were made, directly traced with the nib with no retouching, then vectorized to be digitally assembled. Work has been done on spacing and kerning with the aim to digitally reproduce an utterly calligraphic outcome keeping the natural, imperfect, manual finish of all signs. Fulgora has two variants: Blanca (white) and Negra (black), executed with different nib widths but the same style and proportions.

I grew up spending almost every family vacation as a road trip across the southwestern US. In these adventures, I fell in love with learning about the nature around us; deserts, mountains, plains, piñon trees, rainbow trout, black bears, eagles, and more. I fell into freezing cold white water rapids, explored long-abandoned cliff dwellings, camped under the Milky Way, saw old cave markings, stone markings, preserved art, and read many a many old map legends. The name “Bicyclette” was chosen because this typeface is all about balance and elegance. The idea was to create a highly contrasted sans-serif family carefully balanced between gentle curves and sharp angles, with large capitals opposing uncommonly short lower case, through six distinctive weights. The letters are wide, and the capitals pop up in headlines while the lower case leaves a lot of white space between the text lines because of its small x-height. The edges are rounded (but not so much for the family to be called rounded), just enough to make the text feel slightly softer, gentler, while retaining some of that technical sans sharpness. The Bicyclette character set supports Western and Central European languages, and includes an extended set of monetary symbols. Each weight includes small caps, ligatures, proportional lining and oldstyle numbers, tabular figures, fractions and scientific superior/inferior figures.

Spinnenkop is an old Dutch word which means both ‘spider’ and (in dialect) cobweb. The word forms the basis for that English word: cobweb. Spinnenkop is a magical font. I didn’t use witchcraft to create it, but when it was finished, it reminded me of old fairytales, spell-books and potion recipes. Use it for anything you like, but book covers, product packaging and posters come to mind. Comes with a few swashed letters and a weird alternate g.

Fun Signs JNL comprises twenty-six humorous signs from a 1930s-era sales list of products manufactured by the Koehler Sign Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Koehler manufactured a large line of stock cardboard "Blue Signs" (presumably blue backgrounds with white lettering) and alongside the many standard phrases used by various businesses was a list of funny sayings. Such placards were bought by merchants to either evoke interest in their services (such as in a bar or restaurant, or jokingly comment on their business policies (as in credit billing). These novelty signs are a fun addition to a flier, ad, web page or announcement and will leave your readers smiling.

P22 Yule is a series of display fonts inspired by a mélange of ancient inscriptional writing, with visual references to Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, medieval and even a bit of ancient Greek and roman letterforms. Yule is exotic yet familiar and evocative of winter holidays. It has an Alpine look, lending itself to the thoughts of chalets and fondue. Yule Heavy Snow is blanketed in the white stuff, while Yule Light Flurries is dusted with snowflakes. With the addition of the Klein style, which includes a lowercase, Yule becomes infinitely more usable. The Klein variations can work well as an alternative to Neuland when you need the versatility of a lowercase.

Castile is a central region of Spain that formed the core of the Kingdom of Castile, under which Spain was united in the 15th and 16th centuries. "Castile" is a Kufic modern Arabic typeface. It is suitable for books' covers, advertisement light boards, and titles in magazines and newspapers. It is very distinctive when used in black and white printout. It decorates colored pages and makes artworks more attractive. This font comes in three different weights. I adore Spain and the historical achievements of the Islamic civilization existed there in the past. By designing "Castile" Typeface, I wanted to refer to the Islamic civilization that Muslims had in Spain and especially in Andalusia. Today the name of Castile survives in two autonomous regions of Spain: Castile-La Mancha (capital city is Toledo) and Castile-Leon (capital city is Valladolid). The shapes can be combined easily and the advanced designer can build hundreds of sophisticated compositions. No matter, whether packaging lables, invitations or greeting cards - every assignment with the need of a delightful appeal will be served well. Accolades A and A2 share the same base set of ornaments but differ in some of the major shapes. Despite these differences, the total width of the shapes will be always the same. If you are looking for some good companion fonts, give Gracia and Adana a try. Every classic high contrast stroke design like Didot or Bodoni works well. Note: To look perfect, adjust the size of the ornament font to fit in contrast the design of the companion font.
