One of my all time favourite movies is Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge. In it, there’s a brief scene where the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge (Harold Zidler) signs away the deeds to the establishment. The actual signing of his signature is what motivated me to create this script font. Although it’s not an exact replica of the character’s hand, I like to think that it has the same crisp immediacy of the original. With its consistent oblique slant, narrow and long ascenders and descenders, and the occasional blobbing of letters, the overall effect, gives the appearance of a correspondence penned by lamplight while a storm rages outside.

Let me tell you a secret: This font has got absolutely nothing to do with nougat or France. I just love nougat, and I actually ate some while finishing this font! My wife is a good at making cakes, and lucky for me is that she too adores nougat - that way I often get delicious cakes with nougat :) Well, back to the font - a handmade rounded sans-serif, comic, organic, all-purpose with a playful attitude. Wasty Pudding was made by drawing a lot of letters, over and over again - and not caring so much about the looks, but focusing more on the speed of drawing, because I wanted a font that represented the way I write, when I am taking notes for myself. It’s not pretty, but it’s legible and scribbeliciously beautiful! :) Anyway, I think the purpose of this font is massive amounts of text. Song lyrics, novels, stories, diaries, manuscripts, books, etc. I bet you can fool someone with them thinking that this is not a font, because I have added 6 different versions of each lowercase letter!!!

I used to live in the English Lake District, where I worked in an outdoor gear store. I bought a bright red mountain bike and each day, after work, I cycled up the mountain and hurtled down - heavy metal blasting from my MP3 player. Of course, the bike was a regular MTB, so it got some serious damage after a while, but the adrenaline rush was great! Downhill Dive is a great brush font (made with actual brushes and ink on paper - no tablets involved here!). It is an ode to that wonderful time spent in England. Someone recently pointed out that May and June are the wedding season months, and that while we have some excellent fonts for non-traditional weddings (celtic and renaissance styles work well), we don't have a straightforward, elegant engraver style font. That's the kind of shortcoming we can remedy, hence our Belphebe font, which is in the tradition of popular wedding invitation fonts like Rook, but has some antique characteristics which are in the Scriptorium tradition. The kerning on this font was a real challenge, because we wanted all the characters to fit together for a flowing, hand-lettered look, but the results are worth it.

Journal Hand was inspired by a 45-year-old travel diary I bought at an estate sale. The carefully constructed all-uppercase letters indicated that this traveler cared about style and legibility. Each picture, postcard and brochure that was glued into the diary had a neatly written caption and I admired the care this day tripper took to record his European trek. While the pages are now yellowed and falling apart, the handwriting is still legible and stylish. Because his handwriting totally suits today's uses, I re-created it in modern journalistic style that looks like it was written with a technical pen. The design of the Jeunesse font family derives from a study of primers which the designer undertook earlier in his career. Jeunesse was designed with the intention of combining excellent legibility and character recognition with the ability to create compact, distinctive words and lines while maintaining basic flourishless letterforms.
