With electronics taking over virtually every aspect of manufacturing, packaging and shipping, it's almost difficult to envision a time when wooden crates were marked for identification by using brass stencils. Many of these stencils were hand-cut or manufactured with special punches that perforated the brass sheets with pre-formed letters and numbers. One such stencil was the design model for Marking Stencil JNL.

I have actually never had a sherbet. When I made this font family, I wish I had one, as it was a whopping 38 degrees (Celsius, not Fahrenheit…) outside. Mineola got tired of being like all the other serifed fonts, got some hip body art, and moved to the cool part of town. But every so often, when no one's watching, Mineola puts on a light blue oxford shirt and listens to top 40 radio.

As a font designer for films Henning Brehm delivers fonts with a whip-sharp eye for precision. His latest Vette Letters release, VLNL Agitka is a Cyrillic-inspired (and including) alphabet with both feet rooted in Soviet Union-era propaganda posters. Named after a small town in Texas, which the locals pronounce "meh-HAY-a." Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

This typeface is patterned after the lettering produced by the Marsh Stencil Making Machine, which was an indispensable part of industrial shipping departments in the mid-twentieth century. The font is unicase, but includes a “this side up” pointing hand at the section mark position, and a recycle symbol at the German double-s position. Buntisland (we wonder where we came up with that name from... another subconscious whim), is Greater Albion Typefounders blackletter release for Christmas 2016. The family consists of four typefaces- regular, weathered, shaded and shadowed, and has it's origin in a design challenge which came up in conversation, as all the best ones do. In this case it was 'design a legible all capitals black letter...' Challenge accepted and completed!

Kanna Aoki drew the letters for MVB Emmascript while on a picnic near the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Mark van Bronkhorst adapted the writing as a font that maintains a very natural scrawl. Later a bold weight was added. MVB Emmascript has been used to add a lighthearted, human touch to everything from fiction paperbacks to potato chip packaging. The typeface is named for Aoki's 1968 Volkswagen, Emma.

London is always hip. Hippyfreak was created by manipulating my Beatnik font. I stretched and distorted the outlines until I got an interesting effect reminiscent of the Hippie generation. It has a cool and hip rhythm and movement. Great to use for those funky headlines, or whenever a retro look is desired. Works great at all point sizes. Groovin' baby.

A sign in a London storefront, ca. 1930, pitching—surprise!—Smart Frocks provided the visual cues for designing this typeface. Singularly stylish, hip and haughty and decidedly Deco, this is the smart font to use! This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Portsmouth is a strong, sturdy typeface with historical character. Its inspiration comes from the height and strength of the wooden tall ships that sailed into port in their day. With caps and small caps, this typeface is great for headlines or subheads for design projects that need a historical or retro feel, such as from the 1940s and earlier. Imagine the year 2099 and a merger between two multinational conglomerates dabbling in space colonization and research - maybe Nostromo would be their typeface of choice for branding. Inspired by all-time favourite dirty space movies where it would look natural in a setting with green glowing CRT screens on a rundown and dirty space ship. Nostromo is a futuristic / science fiction display typeface in several weights and styles. Nostromo also comes with stylistic alternatives on several letters.

Early 1900s songwriters had a penchant for devising lengthy titles for their compositions. A perfect example from 1909, "It Is Hard to Kiss Your Sweetheart When the Last Kiss Means 'Good Bye'" is a whopping fourteen words long. The sheet music for this piece has a hand lettered, Art Nouveau sans serif design which became the working model for La Vie Nouveau JNL [which translates to "the new life"], and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Dime Store is a font inspired by childhood memories of dime stores in downtowns and shopping malls in the 1970s. The font was tweaked and digitized by Bob Alonso, who also digitized Breauhare’s Cooper Goodtime font. Dime Store is a cool, hip, nostalgic way of creating a decorative display, and at times it seems to have a slightly futuristic look, too.

An image spotted on the internet of a brass shipping stencil for the Royal Quality Brand (for the John H. Fitch Company of Youngstown, Ohio – a coffee and spice merchant). The lettering style for “Royal Quality” was a hand-cut, condensed, slightly flared sans serif with various character flourishes, giving the letters a stylish, somewhat regal look. Expanding on this idea, a full character set was developed and redrawn digitally as Royal Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Rioma is a geometric typeface inspired by a legend of type design: Antique Olive. As a font family, Rioma ships in two different formats. Depending on your preference, you can install the typeface as two Variable Fonts or use the family’s 16 static OpenType font files instead. Those weights run from Light to Heavy. While the static-format fonts offer a good intermediary-step selection, users who install the two Variable Fonst have vastly greater control over their text’s stroke width.

Xylotype guru Rob Roy Kelly identified this specimen from his personal collection as "Phanitalian". This addition to the Whiz-Bang Woodtype series takes its name from a small Texas town in the middle of nowhere which has risen to international prominence—at least for folks interested in such things—as the site of the World Championship Chili Cook-off. Microsoft Sans Serif™ Regular is a very legible User Interface (UI) font. It was designed to be metrically compatible with the MS Sans bitmap font that shipped in early versions of Microsoft Windows. The original MS Sans was in the inflexible .fon bitmap format and could not be scaled.
