So many designers hate Comic Sans. They think people who don't know design are overusing this funny little friendly font, which is nearly every time out of place. Some years ago, type designer Hannes von Döhren created a free alternative to Comic Sans. The difference: It has serifs and a much cooler look. The big success of the HVD Comic Serif pushed Von Döhren to create a Pro Version with an eastern, central and Western European language support. “The HVD Comic Serif should spread all over and make the world a little bit better.” says Hannes.

PostScript fonts are constructed by connecting dots, dots that have special attributes that control the shape of the connecting lines. In designing Minimalist, I wanted to see how few dots could be used to construct each letter. This is the source of the name--it is (or was) a minimum-point alphabet. I did not expect much from it, and was surprised that it turned out as well as it did. Since I originally drew it, I have added some points to some of the letters to get them to generate proper bitmaps, so it no longer has minimum points.

Thicker is a type-family designed for Zetafonts by Francesco Canovaro with Andrea Tartarelli. A geometric sans typeface on steroids, it was first designed in the muscular Extrablack weight with the aesthetics of high-power dynamic typefaces used in sports communication, and then developed in the lighter weights where the shapes show some vintage-inspired proportions and the slightly squared look that nods to Novarese famous Eurostile, eponymous with retro-futurism. With these diverse influences the typeface allows for both impressive display use and effective logo design as well as more fine-tuned editorial use in body text - with a natural inclination for effective and powerful advertising. Newercastle is the new incarnation of a popular Chank font formerly known as "Newcastle". A consistent fan favorite since its initial release in 2005, the distressed blackletter font is new and improved. This sinister script is now bulked up with all-new capital letters, a bit of punctuation, and smattering of new crowns, griffins and other heraldic doodads. Designer Kevin Hayes opted for an assortment of gritty old icons instead of more traditional punctuation, because he felt that's just the way this type of font could perform best for you, the font enthusiast. "At-signs and percentile glyphs just aren't believable in fraktur-style fonts," says Kevin. You benefit by getting a bit of clip art with the new font instead of boring old punctuation. Theater District JNL revisits the classic lettering of the 1930s Art Deco movement with this bold headline type. While many variations of this letter form exist, each interpretation evokes the approach to modernism and streamline embraced by architects and fashion designers of the period.

Charles Gibbons' Fleischman BT Pro revives J.M. Fleischman's quirky and elegant text faces of the 1730s. Born in Germany, Fleischman worked in Holland, primarily at Enschedé en Zonen where he cut dozens of faces. His types represent some of the earliest examples of the Transitional style, predating and influencing the work of Fournier, Baskerville, and Bodoni. They were wildly popular in their day, used for everything from newspapers to currency, and Fleischman himself has enjoyed a renaissance of late. Fleischman BT Pro preserves the feel of the printed metal types while expanding the original to include four OpenType fonts: roman, italic, bold, and bold italic. They all include small caps, old style and lining figures, discretionary and historical ligatures, ornaments, and superiors. Fleischman Pro also supports Western, Central European, and Eastern European languages.

Graphit is a typeface designed by Lit Design Studio & curated by HvD Fonts. It combines clear, geometric shapes with edgy yet finely-crafted details. Graphit features uncompromising characters such as G, Q, f, k and 1. It works well both for impactful headlines and for reading sizes. The type family consists of six weights plus matching italics. In early 2018, Livius Dietzel & Tom Hoßfeld started developing the typeface’s essential character and released a free font named after the studio, Lit. Just a few months later, Hannes von Döhren had a look at the typeface and suggested expanding it into a family – then publishing it with HvD Fonts. They drew every single letter from scratch, and also decided to give the font a new name — Graphit. The family features six low-contrast weights, ranging from Black to Thin. Every character has been crafted to give it a distinctive and individual feel. Medium, Regular and Light are optimized for usage in copy text. For smaller font sizes & longer body copy, the alternate character set features a double-story a and a simplified Q, f, r and t for improved legibility. Capellina is a responsive type family comprised of four styles – two script fonts and two small caps romans – built to work together in typographic compositions intended to catch the eye. The fonts will work in your app as you can see in the presentation above. They can be seen as some kind of lettering machines programed to take advantage of swashes (specially at the beginning and and at the end of text lines) and to avoid stroke collisions. Because of the Contextual Alternates feature, the letters will change while you’re writing. Just use any OpenType-compatible software, keep this feature activated and the font’s algorithm will do the rest. In Capellina Script and Capellina Rough you can also use the stylistic alternates / stylistic sets feature if you want to explore some extra letterforms.

Rukou originated as a logo for a fashion designer. The idea was to make a fusion of a geometric typeface with the flavour of childish features. Rukou was inspired by school hand-writing models, but adds very specific and interesting features to it. Rather than focusing on readability, the primary goal was to have a unique type texture. This is the reason why lowercase is disconnected. The disconnected letters opened the possibility to create the special shapes for individual letters. The typefaces consist of two different styles inside one font. You can choose to set your titles in uppercase, or lowercase/titlecase. As each style has a slightly different texture, there is the opportunity to combine them in interesting ways. The uppercase can even be set in small paragraphs

Nightlife is a neon style font family reminiscent of Broadway, Hollywood, Las Vegas and the bright lights and razzamatazz of show business. Not that I want to typecast it. It’s a fluid type style that is equally at home on food and drink, confectionery and fmcg packaging: my original working title for it was ‘Jelly Bean’, for reasons that should be obvious! (Note to designers: to create the neon glow effect in Photoshop, make a duplicate of the type layer, rasterize it and add a Gaussian blur filter of approx. 50%. Then bring the original type layer to the top and offset it as required).

This is a type design based on a retrospective food design posters from 1950 in the United States. The intention was to create handmade letters ideal for handmade projects. The principal reference was the book of Steven Heller Mid-Century Ads. This typeface was the graduation project of my degree as graphic designer.

Kayto Script is the second collaboration of Erwin Indrawan as the calligrapher and Dexsar Harry Anugrah of Majestype as the typeface designer. Today the resurgence of calligraphy has reached the summit, with social media as the vehicle, we are now familiar with many styles of calligraphy. Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. Lionheart comes in all popular font formats, with some alternates placed in accessible cells of the character set.

Churchward Typestyle is a clean sans serif font, originally designed as a photo font by Joseph Churchward back in 2002. Under exclusive license, BluHead Studio has digitized this typeface by using his original drawings. We added any missing glyphs, being careful to maintain the aesthetic that makes this a classic Churchward design. Joseph intended this to be a six weight family, so we digitized the Light and Ultra Bold weights and interpolated the middle four. We enhanced the functionality of the family by creating a complimentary set of small caps, as well as creating a 10 degree oblique of each weight, being careful to correct the slanted curve forms of the letters. Churchward Typestyle is now an extensive 12 weight family, ranging in weights from Light to Ultra Bold, making it extremely useful in a broad range of design applications, from text and print, to display, posters and billboards. It’s sanserif design is clean and open, with a few of those characteristic Churchward goodies. Joseph loved his ink traps, so look for many of those! They especially become more apparent in the heavier weights. All of the Churchward Typestyle fonts support the major Western European languages, and have OpenType features for ligatures, smallcaps, tabular figures, superiors, inferiors, fractions, and ordinals.

A typical Art Deco font. I have redesigned the uppercase “S” to mach the lowercase, tweaked a little here and there - and completely redesigned all the diacritics (which didn't really match the letter designs). Nick Curtis says: "The inspiration for this font came from a poster for an Austrian trade show from the 1920s, credited simply to Wasserman." Unarmed began life as a series of rectangles in Fireworks. The task was designing my own business card for the first time in years, and the perfect lettering couldn't be found in either free or commercial fonts. While there were some good choices, none of them really communicated who I was. Initially only the lowercase letters in my name were created, with each being designed around a 7 x 4 grid of squares. I liked the result so much that I wanted to use the same typeface in different projects - and to save time in future, I decided to create this font. In creating DM Unarmed, the intention was to avoid diagonal lines, and to keep all the lines horizontal, vertical and grid-like. This made creating some of the characters - particularly the rounded ones and the letters X and Z - challenging. Coming from both worlds, I wanted to achieve a blend of technicality and creativeness, without trying to pretend one was the other. For best results this font should be used for large and prominent text, although it works at smaller sizes up to 12pt. I've spent a lot of time trying to hint a few characters that wouldn't play ball, such as 2, 7 and 8. In case you're wondering: DM Unarmed got its name from my philosophy of facing challenges without reliance on tools and weapons.

Collins Florets is a collection of embellishments. I found them in the endless archives of Erik Spiekermann. I scanned them and carefully corrected the outlines, to keep the rough look of yesterday. Yours Gert Wiescher

SK Nowatorus is a modern experimental display grotesque. This typeface challenges the usual ideas about the structure of symbols and harmony in the typesetting line. The typeface symbols are based on the average contrast of thicknesses and on the contrast of the shapes of the symbols themselves. The font combines both narrow characters of the main set and wide additional ones. This, coupled with a wide range of alternatives and ligatures, gives huge opportunities for creative experiments. SK Nowatorus supports a multilingual set of Latin Pro and Cyrillic Pro. This typeface is perfect for poster design and for a set of small text blocks due to the presence of a capital and lowercase set.

Niccolo Niccoli (1364-1437) was a wealthy bibliophile and an acclaimed scribe, in Florence (Italy). He was one of the most important Italian calligrapher in this early time of rediscovering Roman script. Of rare accomplishment was his adaptation of the so called Italian humanistic minuscule script. We were inspired from his late work to create this present Font. We have added a lot of accented and other characters (U/V, I/J...) who was not existing in the original and replacing "long s" by a small "s" for a modern use. The OTF encoding was used for intelligent alternates, permitting to use different forms of the same lower case or capital in a single word, reproducing easily the charming variety of a real manual scripture.

Bodoni Classic Deco Two, like the original Bodoni Classic Deco, breaks all rules. Giambattista Bodoni himself would probably hate me for doing it; he was a real purist. The whole idea of the Bodoni typeface is no embellishments and here I go and decorate those nice clear letters. Shame on me! But I find this is a very nice and useful typeface for all kinds of cards and certificates. So I just did it for all of you out there that are not born purists, and want a little embellishment to their lives. And to make things worse, I added a small caps cut. I even decorated the numbers. This is a modern, wonderful, and beautiful font. This font is super readable and can be used from Posters to a Hebrew Bible. The readability of this font is amazing. This font has the modern Hebrew punctuation: Shevana, Kamatz Katan, Dagesh Hazak, and Cholam Chaser. The first Hebrew Variable font with all Trop and Nikud!

ITC Musclehead is the work of type designer Timothy Donaldson, a robust, densely packed handwriting typeface. It almost looks like brushwork but was in fact made with a ruling pen which Donaldson had bought from a company in Salem, Massachusetts. He says, The world's gone ruling-pen mad at the moment [late 1990s] and I was beginning to tire of all the skinny splashiness of the letters that most people were making with them. I wanted to do something heavy and robust with the tool, so that's what I did.""

This font is based on the handwriting of author Franz Kafka and captures his expressive handwriting style, using the manuscript of The Trial and his diaries as the primary reference. The font presents the elegance and nervousness with which he wrote his letters and book manuscripts. To resemble naturalistic writing and remain as authentic and irregular as possible (without becoming impossible to read), a great number of extended ligatures was added. As an extra, several drawings from Kafka‘s diaries are included. A full international character set is featured.

Thomas Oldfield’s typeface, Reaper, is reminiscent of inscribed Greek letterforms but he claims that its origin is much simpler than that. “I recall”, Tom says, “that I just began the design by making the uppercase ‘I’ and continued using it to make up the other characters.” The cap only typeface has alternate cap forms in the lowercase positions, including a vastly scaled downed O and Q that make for some unusual text settings. Contrary to what the name might have you believe, there’s a lot of life in this quirky typeface.

Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Tendria typeface bases its letterforms on the logo for the French “Tendriade” mark. Clearly inspired by writing and hand lettering, Patricia Pothin-Roesch began her work on Tendria in Adobe Illustrator. After a few letters, she went back to designing the old-fashioned way: drawing by hand on layers of tracing paper. Tendria is a sturdy upright script face with a warm, childlike feeling. Its letters are like the typefaces often used in primary schools; the counterforms are large and open. The name Tendria is reminiscent of the French word for tender, “tendre.” Designers who set Tendria lovingly will reap rewards; this is an excellent addition to a display heading toolkit.

With its animated contours, and set in an appropriate size, the Garamond Rough typeface attempts to simulate printed hot metal typesetting. Its roughened edges make it appear softer and less crisp, and, thus, takes the harshness out of the type image. The size of the offered type complement as well as the number of its affiliated symbols makes it ideal for differentiated text setting. Furthermore, its display types make surprising visual accents possible. The origins of the design of Garamond Rough go back to the middle of the 16th century. They are ascribed to Claude Garamond who was one of the first typographers who designed typefaces specifically for the setting of books. During the course of the past centuries and decades, many different variations and new design interpretations of the Garamond typeface were developed to accommodate the most diverse typesetting and printing practices in many different countries. The name “Fiction Crusader” was generated by a random word generator. It may sound odd, but I like the feel of it. Use your imagination: what exactly is a fiction crusader? Each letter has 6 slightly different versions, and they automatically cycle as you type. A great way to make your text look more lively and vibrant! I guess that this is an all-purpose font, because I can’t think of a project that couldn’t use a font like this!

Stuph Light is a collection of drawings pulled from one of the many sketch books Steve Zafarana is always doodling in. Because they are in a font, the drawings can be used in font format or opened and manipulated in vector programs like Freehand or Illustrator. Stuph Light continues to inflict upon an unsuspecting public Steves’ cockeyed outlook on the world that was started with ITC Fontoonies, ITC Gargoonies and ITC Backyard Beasties. Will this lunacy ever end?

The Wright-Regan Instrument Company (Wrico) was one of the leading manufacturers of lettering templates for many years. Aside from their own line of products, they also did custom manufacturing. A series of lettering guides called “Mimeostyle” for the A. B. Dick Company of Chicago (produced for use in making mimeograph machine printing stencils) featured an art Deco squared letter design with rounded corners. This is now available digitally as Template Sans JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
