This is Ekamai, named after the district of Bangkok I lived in. It is based on Quinella, and was supposed to be a quick and easy reworking of that font into a "tight-not-touching" (rather than overlapping) version. As is often the case with quick and easy things, it turned out to be neither, and the vast majority of glyphs needed to be completely overhauled to fit the new system. This face is deliciously plump face, with lovingly rendered curves and just the right amount of cuteness; perfect for food packaging (of the sweeter variety probably!), logos, magazine headlines and the like. It performs admirably in all caps settings. The numerals are expressive hybrid figures (somewhere between lining and oldstyle). The overall feel is friendly and soft, without being overtly saccharine. Ekamai is equipped with subtle contextual alternates (which I'd recommend leaving on) to help with the tight fit, a handful of discretionary ligatures if that's your thing, and a case feature for all caps settings. The stylistic alternates and stylistic set 1 features simply change the # glyph to an attractive numero. Automatic fractions are included along with wide-ranging language support.

Sweet Gothic is a 2009 addition to the Sweet Collection of engraved lettering styles from the 20th Century.  Sweet Gothic Light is closely based on lettering from an engravers pattern from the early 1900s that was used for tracing letterforms with the engraving machine (pantograph) to make steel engraving plates. The design is related to many similar engravers gothics developed in the early 1900s, but as each engraving house created by hand their own patterns for popular styles of the time, there is variation among the models. Sweet Gothic offers contrast in stroke weight and its unique personality. The bolder weights are new designs, based on the characteristics of the Light. A serif variant (Sweet Gothic Serif) has also been developed to expand the usefulness of the family, offering an alternative to Copperplate Gothic. As such, most of the fonts are new designs, yet may seem familiar and ubiquitous given their model. The fonts offer two sizes of figures and monetary symbols: one set is intended for use with upper- and lowercase settings; the second set is the same height as the small caps.

VLNL Beatbox is a solid tech heavy straight stencil-face with a lot of character. It was originally designed as a logo for dj Markus Schultz back in 2004, who rejected it. His management couldn't read it, or thought people wouldn’t be able to read it. But Chef Donald DBXL found the concept interesting enough to finish it and has used it in many projects since. It was the identity font for the Battle of Amsterdam, a talent showcase in beat boxing and other skills. Beatboxing is a style of hiphop music (beats) made with the mouth and a microphone. A box is a handy container to store stuff. Like food, or fonts. We use a lot of boxes at the VetteLetters office. VLNL Beatbox is best deployed big, like in logos or headlines. Or flyers, album covers, posters and signage. As a display and headline typeface it’s got a lot of character. We could definitely see it painted on the side of a tank, or an airplane. It’s heavy, but not at all dangerous. Use it without risk. VLNL Beatbox comes in two variations; Regular and Small (smallcaps)

The major focus of my life and ministry at this point is book design. In the brave new world of 21st century self-publishing a new paradigm has arisen: the indie small shop. One of the problems is that all books are published as ebooks, and many books are published only as ebooks. There are two problems with this: character availability and licensing. The licensing problem is solved by including an ebook license with all of the Librum E fonts. The character availability is the core of the design. OpenType features do not work yet with ePUBs [though it is in the spec, if I understand correctly]. Kerning doesn't work, and so on. So these five fonts have only the 256-character [or less] ASCII set. A separate small caps is included. It has lining figures {proportional} and small caps instead of the graphics. The other four fonts have graphics to give bullet choices in lists, oldstyle figures {proportional}, and care given to character shapes so they will work better without kerning. In 1972, VGC released two typefaces by designer friends Dick Jensen and Harry Villhardt. Jensen’s was called Serpentine, and Villhardt’s was called Venture. Even though both faces had the same elements and a somewhat similar construct, one of them became very popular and chased the other away from the spotlight. Serpentine went on to become the James Bond font, the Pepsi and every other soda pop font, the everything font, all the way through the glories of digital lala-land where it was hacked, imitated and overused by hundreds of designers. But the only advantage it really had over Venture was being a 4-style family, including the bold italic that made it all the rage, as opposed to Venture’s lone upright style. One must wonder how differently things would have played if a Venture Italic was around back then. Chopper is Canada Type’s revival of Venture, that underdog of 1972. This time around it comes with a roman, an italic, and corresponding biform styles to make it a much more attractive and refreshing alternative to Serpentine. Chopper comes in all popular formats, boasts extended language support, and contains a ton of alternate characters sprinkled throughout the character map.

It took me 12 years to bring this extensive font family to completion. A lot has been changed, transformed, peeled and developed in all those years. For many of my projects I used it as my quarry and so it might have become something like a synthesis of all my imaginations and experiences. Karim is a traditional-style Arabic text face, designed in response to a demand for a traditional text face adapted to setting Quranic commentaries. Within the constraints of the standard character set and typesetting program, Karim’s design aims to recall the style and fluency of manuscript Naskh without, however, reproducing the idiosyncrasies of any particular calligrapher. The line weight chosen is heavier than usual for a traditional light face in order to benefit the reproduction of small size Tafsir text. A tall kaf, deep descenders and slightly inclined alifs and lams all help to suggest the cursiveness of manuscript. The type-style that emerges is characterized by restraint and clarity; qualities suited to Karim’s original purpose, and ones that recommend it for wider use. Karim ships includes Latin glyphs from Janson Text Roman, allowing the single font to set text in both most Western European and Arabic languages. Karim’s code pages incorporate Basic Latin and the Arabic character set, which supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. Milton Glaser’s Kitchen Typeface from the mid 1970s exemplifies the bold 3-D art deco revival genre that was a trademark of the Glaser style. This typeface resulted from his involvement in the design of the The Big Kitchen in the World Trade Center’s concourse in New York City. The new P22 Glaser Kitchen takes on the technical challenge of overlapping 3-D shadows by offering two styles. P22 Glaser Kitchen Regular is spaced out so that the shadows do not overlap the white spaces of the neighboring letters. Whereas the P22 Glaser Kitchen 3D Fill and 3D Shadow can be used layered on top of one another to achieve the tight spacing intended by Glaser. P22 Glaser Kitchen was based on original drawings and phototype proofs from the Milton Glaser Studios archives. Typographic punctuation and sorts were imagined by James Grieshaber to work with Glaser’s design, as well as diacritics to accommodate most European languages. Over the years there have been many typefaces that borrowed heavily from the Glaser designs, but these are the only official fonts approved by Milton Glaser Studio and the Estate of Milton Glaser.

Callisto is a classic serif stencil fonts that is a stencil font like no others. Elegant curves are paired with great legibility and wide range of available glyphs. While stencil fonts are generally thought of as too masculine and rough, Callisto is very feminine and soft, which makes it perfect as a logo font for those who seek to further emphasise their brand's identity. Despite being a display font, Callisto looks great at smaller sizes, so short headlines and headers will look natural and email legible even in smaller sizes. Callisto comes in two styles —Regular and Half —which can easily be combined within the same body of text. Regular is a more minimal style, with wider and more open apertures, while Half is a hybrid between a serif and stencil font that still has longer strokes and stems. Each style consists of 415 glyphs, ranging from fractions to diacritics. There are a number of glyphs with cool stylistic alternatives (which is awesome for branding), lots of punctuation and OpenType features. EraMax 123 is a multi-layered display geometric sans serif, meant to be set BIG, for large, colourful statements. It's the perfect face for packaging, posters & branding, where a strong, colourful voice is needed... Did I mention posters? The "Max" in EraMax comes from the ultra bold weight, but also, and mainly as a tip of the hat to Peter Max, the designer and artist, known for creating so many images which have come to be emblematic of the sixties and seventies. The bold gradient effects in some of his posters were the inspiration behind the dotted and striped layers. This font's vintage flavour truly stand out in a retro setting, but also has a modern flavour that lends it the flexibility to work well in a more contemporary context. This is the second of what is to be an extended family of typefaces based on the original hand painted signage found in the T. H. & B Railway station in Hamilton Ontario, a classic Art Moderne building, designed by the New York architectural firm of Fellheimer and Wagner for the Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo Railway line and completed in 1933.

Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.

Montague Script takes its name from a small hilltown of western Massachusetts rich in culture and history. I lived in this beloved community for a number of years and it’s where I first began my study of calligraphy and lettering. While most brush scripts take their cue from mid-twentieth century samples, Montague Script is a fresh, contemporary alternative. It comes directly from lettering written with a #3 sable brush on smooth vellum and is digitized with the same sensibility a lettering artist writes with. Montague reflects a dynamic interplay between form and rhythm not usually associated with type. Words suggest a baseline, yet are not bound by it. Beginnings, endings, alternates and ligatures come in as needed while you type. Many more alternates are available in the glyph palette of most current graphic software. Exuberant swash versions of upper and lowercase letters, as well as ligatures can be accessed through both the type and glyph palettes. Montague Script is a natural for advertising, point of purchase displays, packaging and logo design, cards, invitations, journals and much more. “Designers can’t help but be inspired by the things that surround them,” says Massif’s designer Steve Matteson. An avid mountain climber, Matteson found his inspiration for his text face family in the dramatic granite formations of North America’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Most of Matteson’s type designs are custom projects designed with an end use or customer in mind. Massif, which had no customer or specific purpose, was probably his most personal typeface to date. “My goal was to embody, in Massif’s two-dimensional letterforms, the angular tension and smooth curvature characteristic of the rugged terrain of Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome, which was formed by eons of glacial and tectonic activity,” Matteson explains.
