Echelon is based upon 1970s Eastern European ‘pipe-style’ typefaces. This style of Communist consumer typography came from what, at the time, seemed like a bizarre mirror universe: Existing alongside the West, similar-but-different, essentially unknowable. Even though the letterforms had the same historical origins as their Western equivalents, they also had their own bizarre fashionable/unfashionable aesthetic. The parallels between the surveillance practices of the Soviet Union and those of today’s Western governments informed the naming of this typeface. Echelon is the codename for a massive international surveillance system that collects and processes data from communications satellites. It can eavesdrop on telecoms and computer systems, it can track bank accounts. It can record and store information on millions of individuals.

This family was created from the set of font faces used in Lima (Peru) by Antonio Ricardo in 1584 for the first publication ever printed in Southern America: a four-page leaflet in Spanish entitled "Pragm·tica sanciÛn" with information about the new Georgian calendar of 1582 which had not yet been communicated to the colonies. In our two styles (Regular & Italic), font faces, kernings and spacing are as close as possible to the original. This font was inspired from the numerous font-types looking like Hand-carved in the 1700's. The capitals are mainly inspired from the font carved by Fournier in year 1781, the year of the famous American and French decisive victory at Yorktown, and drawn by Benjamin Franklin himself, and the lower cases are inspired from the well known "bâtarde coulée" style, ornamented with final loops and enriched with alternates and ligatures. Doc Holliday is an original design by Alex Kaczun. It's a classic revival of a Western-style slab serif font extended to include Eastern European Latin and Baltic languages. Doc Holliday has a mid to late 1800s wood type feel, and one can envision a sign over the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, and the legendary Gunfight between the three Earp brothers and "Doc" Holliday and the Claytons and McLaurys.
