Song Publisher JNL features a design based on the 1945 Art Deco-era hand lettered sheet music title "When the Old Gang's back on the Corner (Singin' Sweet Adeline Again)". It's a good thing sheet music wasn't sold by the word count found in song titles, because this twelve word example would have been more costly than titles such as "Nola", "Tenderly" or "Ciribiribin".

Houdini was extemporized from the single word "Houdini" on a lithographed poster for the magician. The original was a shaded outline like our Houdini Shaded font, but we felt that a solid version would be worthwhile too. Like the companion font Houdini, the shaded version was created from the single word Houdini on an old lithographed poster for the famous magician. The original was hand-lettered by a litho lettering artist.

Orenji is the Japanese word for Orange: it is a phonetic translation of the English word. I was actually looking for a certain shade of orange (the color), when I stumbled upon this fun word. I already toyed with the idea of creating a font loosely based on my son Sam's handwriting and I figured Orenji would be a good name for it. Orenji is a fun, cute and extravagant font. It has some uniquely shaped glyphs, comes with a giggle and a hug and more diacritics than you can throw a banana at.

Équipage is a French word meaning ‘crew’. It is used for the crew on boats, airplanes, but it also applies to horse-drawn carriages and all that goes with it. Originally the word means ‘to fit out’ and it is probably derived from the Norse word ‘skipa’, which means ‘arrange, fit out a ship’. Then, if you’re really interested, the word ‘ship’ hails from this same word, just like the Danish ‘skib’, Middle Dutch ‘ship’, Dutch ‘schip’ and German ‘Schiff’. See? You learn something every day! This handmade looking brush font is inspired by the titles of the 1959 movie, Imitation of Life, by prolific film titles artist, Wayne Fitzgerald. The 'pastiche' of the font's name derives from the 'imitation' of the film's title, and from the imitation of the brush. OpenType enabled software can make Pastiche Brush feel even more handmade. There are alternates for every letter and number, and most punctation marks and symbols. Every letter has at least one alternate glyph, and more commonly used (in English at least) letters have up to three, so when contextual alternates are enabled, the font automatically cycles through glyphs in a pseudo-random manner. This means no double letter combination will ever contain two identical glyphs. Not only this, but it's highly likely the same word will look different elsewhere in the sentence. The contextual alternates feature also takes care of start and end forms of letters, for an even more handmade feel. This is a great font for headlines in fashion glossies, food packaging where an organic look is desirable, posters, perfume bottles, wine bottles... the list goes on. And with extensive language support, it's going to be a very usable addition to your display font repertoire.

The font is largely undesigned, but is bound together by a thick connected band which forms the word-blocks. At the same time, parts of Urbanregent are very designed, glyphs have been re-designed to reflect changes in the way we speak and write. The exclamation mark is louder and more manic, because people tend to write two or three exclamation marks after each other anyway. The full stop is more stopping and the hyphen kicks you on to the next word. Kenn Munk's fonts are generally hard to use - Urbanregent is no exception, but a tip would be to start each word with a capital letter. Because Every Word Is Important.

Burgues Script is an ode to the late 19th century American calligrapher Louis Madarasz, whose legendary pen has inspired schools of penmanship for over 100 years. His talent has caused some people to call him “the most skillful penman the world has ever known.” I use the word ‘ode’ in a colloquially ambitious manner. If I was an actual poet, my words would be about things I desire but cannot attain, objects of utter beauty that make me wallow in humility, or people of enormous talent who look down at me from the clouds of genius. But I don’t write poems. My work consists of letters drawn to fit together, that become an element of someone’s visual poetry. I am the poet’s assistant, so to speak. Once in a while, the assistant persists on what the subject of the poem will be. And occasionally, the poet gives in to the persistence. I hope you, visual poet, find my persistence justified in this case. The two main sources for Burgues were the calligraphy examples shown in Zaner Bloser’s The Secret of the Skill of Madarasz: His Philosophy and Penmanship Masterpieces, and C. W. Jones’s Lessons in Advanced Engraver’s Script Penmanship by L. Madarasz. These two references were the cornerstone for the concept I was trying to work with. I did have to change many of the letters in order to be able to produce digital calligraphy that can flow flexibly and offered the user a variety of options, while maintaining its attractive appearance. To this end, many ligatures and swashes were made, as well as full flourished sets of letters for use at the beginnings or endings of words and sentences. All of this has been tied together with OpenType and tested thoroughly within today’s standard design and desktop publishing software. After working with digital scripts for so long, at one point I thought that Burgues Script would become a bit of a chore to complete. I also thought that, like with most other scripts, the process would regularize itself after a while and be reduced to a mechanical habit. Surprisingly, and fortunately for me, this did not happen. The past holds as many surprises as the future. Madarasz’s method of penmanship was fascinating and challenging to translate into the strict, mathematically oriented language of the computer. It seems that the extremely high contrast of the forms, coupled with the required flow and connectivity of such lettering, will always be hard work for any visual artist to produce, even with the aide of a powerful machine. I can only imagine what steady nerves and discipline Madarasz must have had to be able to produce fully flourished and sublimely connected words and sentences on a whim. When I think of Madarasz producing a flourished calligraphic logotype in a few seconds, and try to reconcile that with the timelines of my or my colleagues’ work in identity and packaging design, the mind reels. Such blinding talent from over a hundred years ago. Burgues is the Spanish word for Bourgeois. In the end, I hope Burgues Script will serve you well when a flourished word or sentence is required for a design project. One of the wonders of the computer age is the ability to visually conjure up the past, serving both the present and the future. Winter Garden JNL was modeled from the eccentric sans serif hand lettering with varying line widths found on the sheet music of 1917's "When the Girl You'd Give the World to Win Gives Her Heart to You". (It seems that sheet music from the early 1900s often had song titles that were more than just a few choice words. This particular ditty's title took up fourteen words to make its point.) The font is available in regular and oblique versions and gets its name from both the famed theater in New York and the city located 14 miles West of downtown Orlando, Florida.

A font by Christian Acker (2003), based upon the practice of the Americana folk art tradition of tattoo design. Throughout the late 19th and 20th Centuries sailors would popularize and spread motifs, designs and styles by carrying this art around the world on their sleeves. A family of four fonts representing traditional styles is now available as a digital font. High Cut came about by this found object I stumbled upon, while exploring an abandoned building, which had this word "High" cut out of it in a similar stencil design. I thought it would be a fun challenge to create an entire typeface inspired by this found object. Enjoy this new stencil typeface!

These four typefaces, Berlinette NB, Lyonette NB, Marseillette NB and Parisette NB, were designed from the same basic shape, a fanciful geometric form that avoids strict horizontals and uses more offbeat triangular shapes. Marseillette is the nasty one, with sharp hook terminations that require careful use. Don�t slip and accidentally stick one in your hand � it will hurt pretty bad and make you blubber like a baby. It�s good for surreal warning signs on dark, forbidding docks where gooey monsters live.

Some words from the designer... West coast artist Teri Kahan developed a "design font" of 68 pictographs capturing the sentiments of relationship, connection and synchronicity. Manchette is an Arabic headline typeface that was inspired by the hand-written Naskh newspaper headlines during the 60s-70s era in the Arab world. The word "manchette" is a french word, that means headline. It was used mainly by the Egyptian calligraphers and designers.
