A 1930s WPA (Works Projects Administration) poster advertising a play entitled “Abraham Lincoln, The Great Commoner” had the play’s name done in a hand-lettered Art Deco sans. This is the basis for Art Project JNL. According to Wikipedia, “the Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. In a much smaller but more famous project, Federal Project Number One, the WPA employed musicians, artists, writers, actors and directors in large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects.”

Ray Cruz releases another typeface family, this time inspired by 1970's pop culture. Fat Albert Regular, Outline and Shadow are bold poster types that evoke the fun and funk of an era gone by. Go on bro, get Fat Albert and get down.

A light and playful sans serif type design with Art Nouveau influences was called “Tasso” within the pages of the 1893 edition of the Barnhart Bros. & Spindler type specimen book. This is now available as Nouveau Boutique JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Transport New is a redrawing of the typeface designed for British road signs. In addition to the familiar Heavy and Medium weights, Transport New extrapolates and adds a previously unreleased Light weight font originally planned for back-lit signage but never actually applied. Version 3.0 of Transport New features significant improvements including numerous outline and spacing refinements, and a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. Also, to align Transport New with the 2015 release of Motorway, the other typeface used for UK road signage, Italic fonts for all three weights have been added. Originally designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert beginning in 1957 and first published on the Preston bypass in 1958, the original Transport font has subtle eccentricities which add to its distinctiveness, and drawing the New version involved walking a tightrope between impertinently eliminating awkwardness and maintaining idiosyncrasy. The Grotesk roots of the glyphs were investigated and cheekily fine-tuned – uncomfortably close terminals of characters such as 5, 6, C, G, and e were shortened, the S and s were given a more upright aspect and their protruding lower terminals tucked in, overly wide glyphs like the number 4 were narrowed, and some claustrophobic counters were slightly opened up. The question mark was redesigned and parentheses given some stroke contrast. The x height was edged fractionally even taller. The Heavy font is actually more of a Bold, and the Light is pretty much a regular weight, but the original nomenclature has been retained for old times’ sake.

At first glance, »Angulosa M.8« is one of those fonts that a technician or engineer would probably draw. And yet it differs fundamentally from typefaces constructed in this way. The right angle forms the basic element of the »Angulosa M.8«, but that's about it with the pure mathematics. Serif-like upstrokes and downstrokes on some letters improve readability, and carefully used slants makes the appearance a little friendlier. The proportions are not based on any mathematical principle, but are derived from freehand writing of the letterforms with a broad quill. During the Covid pandemic, I noticed that a lot of public figures (politicians, actors, influencers and even kings and princesses) had to apologise for not following the social distance rules, the lockdown rules or the 'stay at home' rules. They threw parties, went on holidays abroad and - in general - made a nuisance of themselves. When I finished this font, I decided to call it Public Figure! Public Figure is quite a neat, handmade font. It doesn't stick to the rules (but does like to keep up appearances), likes to party (but manages to stay safe) and brightens up your work (without being too gaudy). Public Figure comes with two alternate sets for the lower case glyphs (that cycle as you type) and a massive amount of diacritics, including Vietnamese.

M Hei Sung PRC is a monolinear style Simplified Chinese typeface. Monolinear font designs have little or no thick-thin contrast in the strokes, and modest design characteristics at entry, finial and transitional points of the strokes. The Monolinear category includes Hei (or Gothic) and Yuen typefaces.

This is the rounded, softer version of Canada Type's popular Press Gothic. Originally done in 2011 for a global publisher, this font has already seen plenty of magazine and book cover action, perhaps even more than the sharp condensed face that spawned it. And like Press Gothic, Soft Press comes with small caps and biform/unicase forms, in addition to the main upper/lowercase set. Many current poster artists like to reference the graphic type styles that were popular in the ’60s and ’70s. At first glance, it may appear that the capitals of Zaftig all take up the same amount of space, but certain letters have been designed proportionally for a better flow. Taking its cue from the lettering of 1930s Dutch commercial artist Martin Meijer, Libertine is a script where expert calligraphy and total wrist control are on display. With strokes stopping and starting at very steep angles and extreme contrasts, every character is a high riff jolting from within a stunning epic that brands the message home. This family was created inspired from the first font carved and cast in France, for the Sorbonne University’s printing workshop (Paris). This is the rounded, softer version of Canada Type's popular Wagner Grotesk. Originally done in 2011 for a global publisher, this font has already seen plenty of magazine and book cover action, perhaps even more than the sharp condensed face that spawned it. And like Wagner Grotesk, Wagner Round comes with small caps and biform/unicase forms, in addition to the main upper/lowercase set. 'Euclid. A New Type,' originally designed in the 1930s by modern American designer Alvin Lustig (1915-1955), has been revived as 'Lustig Elements' through a collaboration of designers Craig Welsh and Elaine Lustig Cohen. Only twelve letterforms from the original font design had been retained in archive material in the many decades since its initial development. Lustig Elements combines four simple, geometric shapes aligned to an underlying grid with letterform designs that hold true to the spirit of the original font. Lustig Elements initially came to life in 2015 as wood type cut at Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. The digital version expands on the basic character set with a pro expanded latin character set, small caps and even an Inline variation.

Originally released in 1987, Charter incorporates three important features: compact set width to give economical copyfit; generous x-height to give readability at small point sizes; and sturdy open letterforms to give reliable reproduction at both typesetter and laser printer resolutions. The design brings a clarity and freshness to everyday documents, such as newsletters, textbooks, directories and technical manuals, where the reader’s concentration must not be interrupted by unfamiliar letterforms but where typographic dullness can itself impair comprehension. The Italic has cursive letterforms - so is instantly distinguishable, while being readable enough in its own right for continuous text. The Charter BT Pro Pack features 6 fonts: roman, italic, bold, bold italic, black, and black italic. The fonts include characters originally developed for expert sets, such as ligatures, ornaments, old style figures, small caps, and superiors. The Pro Pack fonts support Western, Central European, and Eastern European languages. OpenType fonts are a cross-platform font format. The same OpenType font can be installed on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, and Unix systems. Mac OS X and Windows 2000, XP, and Vista have built-in support for OpenType. OpenType fonts also work on Linux, Unix, and earlier versions of Windows, where they are recognized as TrueType fonts. OpenType includes many more features than the standard TrueType and PostScript formats, including the ability to install the same font on different platforms, crucial for document portability. OpenType fonts boost productivity because graphic designers and business professionals do not have to wrestle with many different fonts. With OpenType, customers have larger character sets to work with and fewer font files to deal with.

Solantra is a solidly crafted handwritten script. I’ve long felt that beautiful writing is more pleasing to the eye than the more attention grabbing swashes and flourishes. That being said, both have their role in design and Solantra has a large slice of each. Solantra combines vintage style handwriting with all its quirks and English Roundhand of that same era. The result is a solid setting script filled with charm and personality. With default Adobe Illustrator settings for Ligatures and Contextual Alternates active, the vintage charm is in full display. Want to add more flair? There are loads of more embellished letters inside the full version. Solantro takes into account how scripts are actually written so that connections from letter to letter are more fluid and rhythmic than the average script font. In natural script/handwriting most letters end at the bottom right and move up to connect with the next. Some letters like o, v, and w, however; end at the top right. Rather than force these letters to dip down and go back up they should ideally connect from that upper right point. This is accomplished through a series of alternate letters and ligatures with extensive contextual feature programming. So, for example, you might get one version of a ligature in the middle of a word and a different one at the beginning or end of that word. Solantra also takes into account another often overlooked feature of natural handwriting. When you write you inevitably pick your pen up from the paper at times. This is often just to reposition the hand, but in the days of writing with dip pens this was also needed to attain a fresh supply of ink. Having these occasional breaks in connections makes the writing less static and more rhythmic. While the Basic versions are limited to a standard character set and several ligatures and alternates for better settings of text, the full pro versions contains 1292 glyphs and an abundance of features. Even with numbers there are options like Oldstyle numbers, fractions, and ordinals. Central European language support is included as well as some select ligatures that use accents. Designed by Ernst Lauschke in 1888 and issued by Barnhart Bros. & Spindler foundry in Chicago under the name Dormer. It was revived in 1923 by the foundry with a new name, Pekin. We have "regularized" the face for modern use, but have included the changed characters as alternates.

Unearthed by our friend Dimitris Karaiskos in an antique shop in Vienna, we digitized it and added more glyphs. Blitzplakat is the name of this pre-Letraset system, where you could make your own little advertising posters by cutting out these letters and sticking them on paper like stamps.

Neues Bauen is a Bauhaus inspired font with some interesting glyphs. It is slightly rounded in places, but sharp in others and it will most certainly make your designs stand out. Neues Bauen in other words, like the style that emerged in pre-war Germany, is a statement.
