Basim Marah is an Arabic display typeface and is useful for titles and graphic projects. The font is based on the simple lines of free style calligraphy. A collaborative effort, Basim Marah was designed and drawn by Basim Salem Al Mahdi from Iraq and then digitalized as a typeface by Hasan Abu Afash from Palestine. In November, 2008, Basim Marah was upgraded by working with Mirjam Somers an award-winning Arabic type designer to the DecoType font format for use in WinSoft Tasmeem which is now bundled with InDesign CS4.

Ponzastura typeface was inspired by Aldo Novarese's Eurostile, but in this case, monolinear strokes took on contrast and stress. The classical appearance of Ponzastura, whose name is inspired by the Italian city Pontestura where A. Novarese was born, is more of a reaction and interplay. Adelphi is a geometric sans, redefined for the northern side of the English Channel. Typographic modernism was a late arrival in Britain — due partly to the Second World War and to the strong local type tradition. This delay provided for fruitful divergence, thus modernism was not adored in quite the same way as it had been in Germany and central Europe. It was instead rethought and repurposed against the backdrop of the bleak British weather and postwar social reform – a continental fashion statement reshaped into a more humanist variant. Likewise, when crafting Adelphi, Nick Job reimagined the constraints that defined the geometric sans as a genre. Whereas other typefaces seem overly bound by the rules, Adelphi feels relaxed and approachable. Elementary square and circular shapes are merely implied. A keen observer may notice that the uncomplicated letterforms occasionally reveal a subtle naïveté associated with early Grotesques. Brunel’s bridges and Harry Beck’s tube map spring to mind alongside the Bauhaus and Futura. But Adelphi is by no means nostalgic! It is a contemporary, comprehensive, and durable system with a pragmatic set of features. These include a wide array of weights, ‘uniwidth italics’, and variable extenders that go from tall and flat in Adelphi Text to short and sharp in Adelphi Display, with default Adelphi standing midway between these two extremes. You can set the extenders to your preference in the all-inclusive variable font or use one of the three static fonts that come packed together, priced as a single font. The pan-European support for Latin, Cyrillic and Greek scripts already makes for a vast character set, but Adelphi takes things a step further by including alternate glyphs to satisfy the DIN1450 legibility norm, a range of ordinals that can be used to create specialist compositions in all three scripts and two kinds of fractions and arrows. Play with the alternates or use it as-is. Either way, this understated beauty will carry you through.

Soleil, designed by Wolfgang Homola, is a geometric sans serif typeface. Unlike most existing geometric sans serif typefaces, it has asymmetrical counters, making it look fresher, more dynamic and more contemporary. Simple geometric forms – such as the circle or the square – played a certain role in the design of the letterforms, but in order to introduce more fluidity into the rather stiff and rigid concept of geometric sans serif typefaces, a lot of optical corrections were necessary. Soleil is based on the modernist ideas of simplicity, clarity and reduction to essential forms. Yet its letter shapes are not the result of geometric construction, but of a design process that brings together simplicity and fluidity, clarity and rhythm. Soleil has a rather large x-height, making it legible also in small sizes or from a bigger distance. The typeface family consists of six weights. The Opentype version also allows for the implementation of typographic features such as Small Caps, lining and old-style figures, both tabular and proportional, ligatures, alternate characters, case-sensitive variants and fractions. Soleil offers a wide range of potential applications: signage and wayfinding systems, book and magazine design, branding and corporate publications.

K-Block was inspired by a hand-lettered sign by a young lady by the name of Kristina Lee. It captures a light-hearted, youthful feeling and is not intended to be taken too seriously. It was drawn for fun and is fun to use. Its very inconsistency insists on being casual and relaxed. Probably better for a birthday party announcement than a bank letterhead. Can you imagine a Just-For-Fun National Bank? K-Block Solid compliments K-Block and provides a stronger presence when required. For two-color work, K-Block can be layered on top of K-Block Solid to provide a different color outline for a very effective presentation. Full Western European character set plus alternate g and y, as well as a Th ligature. If you have a drawing program like Corel Draw, you can easily convert the alternate g and y to curves and stretch out the tails to underline an entire word. Bold, muscular, vaguely oriental, Wedge Gothic ML is the original name of this font released by Barnhart Bros. and Spindler of Chicago in 1893. The straight-forward, no-nonsense name tells us exactly what to expect: sans-serif letterforms based on wedge-shaped vertical strokes. The typeface was dropped for awhile -- it does not appear in the 1907 catalog for example -- but reappeared in 1925 as Japanette. What is the opposite of "straight-forward" anyway? According to McGrew, Wedge Gothic was originally created for the Chicago Herald newspaper. The designer is unknown. A distinctive display face, useful when a strong and unusual statement is desired. Designed by Heinz Konig, Waltari was released by the Rudhard'schen Giesserei of Offenbach A.M., Germany in 1900, and reflects all the flamboyant exuberance of that period. Waltari is a Jugendstil rotunda, combining its blackletter roots with a strong Roman influence in an effort to achieve a broader appeal than the traditional forms. As a rotunda, Waltari is easily read by readers who are not comfortable with the schwabachers and frakturs in common use in German printing. Waltari, with its decorative flourishes, has the amazing ability to be both traditional and youthful at the same time. Especially useful for for scrapbooks and invitations. A sign of something better When designer Stuart de Rozario surveyed the fonts used in signage on London’s public transport systems, he reached a dead end. They seemed staid, sterile, lacking in personality, and ill-suited to use by modern brands. He was pointed in another direction entirely. ‘The driving force behind my thoughts was to design something more current and fresh without compromising legibility and clarity. A font with both personality and function, that’s versatile and large and small sizes, and effortless to read, but which also says something new.’ Speed reading Late for a meeting and can’t find your way? Trying to catch a flight? Lost in a hospital? Reading signs is a different business to reading a book or a newspaper. Text on signs needs to be deciphered quickly and effortlessly. So the legibility criteria for signage letterforms are different to those for normal reading, too. Throughout FS Millbank’s uppercase and lowercase alphabets, characters have been given features for extra definition, including: wide ink traps on the A, K, M, V, W, X and Y; a serifed i, accentuated spurs on the a, d, l u; and different x-height shapes on the b, g, p and q. Distinctive forms and generous, open internal shapes all help the quick reading of sign text, and wide, open terminals and counters allow similar letter shapes to be distinguished easily when viewed at different angles. Running down a corridor, maybe... Positive/negative Standard type tends to glow on the kind of dark backgrounds often used for signage, and look heavier than its true weight. To correct the imbalance caused by this optical trick, special weights of the typeface have to be drawn for these ‘negative’, light-on-dark applications. These are lighter than their comparable positive weights to overcome the ‘glow’ effect. After extensive tests of the negative weights, at all sizes, we achieved the right optical balance. Glowing, glowing, gone. Icons This wouldn’t be a signage typeface without its own set of icons, or symbols, to help people find what they’re looking for. So, to sit alongside the positive and negative fonts, we’ve created a comprehensive set of 172 icons, covering a wide range of applications from transport and user interface to information and directional. Designed within the typeface capital height, they sit on the baseline and are spaced centrally.

The idea behind the font called Chaco originated after testing the deficiency shown in road signs in Latin America. The design began after a long documenting period. Throughout the various stages of the work,  there were several  tests and checks  conducted of the formal solutions implemented which, based on the results, would gradually be changed until we finally reached, in this way, its definite design. The original project for the font features three steps, namely: regular, light and bold, yet by making progress in the development, it was possible for us to perceive that by enlarging the black and thin variances, the family with 5 different weights could offer very good results in mass media, such as newspapers, magazines and television. In order to expand its possibilities of utilization, the set was completed with italics and small capitals.

The typefaces Largo Mager (Light) and Largo Halbfett (Medium) were cast for the first time in 1937 by Ludwig & Mayer based on the designs by Hans Wagner. One weight Largo Licht (Outline) was added in 1956. All fonts were only configured with capitals. The digital version of Largo has pointed serifs and not the slightly rounded ones seen in the hot metal versions which gives the typeface a more elegant note. Largo is often used for fine printing jobs as business cards or formal invitations, or in the fashion and cosmetics fields. Hans Wagner was born in Munich in 1894 and died in 1977 in Altenburg where he had worked as a painter, graphic designer and book designer. In addition to the Largo typeface, he developed, among others, the Altenburger Gotisch (1928), the Welt-Antiqua (1931-1934) and the Wolfram (1930).

A feminine, graceful script whose thicker horizontals create a wave-like rhythm — hence the name. Seashore is loosely based on an "eccentric" (left-leaning) penmanship style of the late 19th century. Used mainly by professional "engrossers" in certificates and tributes, or by society ladies in their stationery and invitations, it sent a message of true refinement, as the style would have been only been mastered after the more common business, Spencerian, and standard ornamental styles. In fact, unusual script styles were in such demand that type foundries of the era exploded with metal-type knockoffs of increasing fanciness. Seashore includes a wide variety of swash capitals, alternate endings, and contextual ligatures, over 900 glyphs in all. Seashore is best used in short display settings — in names and addresses on formal invitations, in menus and food packaging, or fashion and beauty contexts.
