When Candy Script was officially released and in the hands of a few designers, I was in the middle of a three-week trip in North America. After returning to Buenos Aires, I found a few reactions to the font in my inbox. Alongside the congratulatory notes, flattering samples of the face in use, and the inevitable three or four “How do I use it?” emails, one interesting note asked me to consider an italic counterpart. 

I had experimented with a few different angles during the initial brainstorming of the concept but never really thought of Candy Script as an upright italic character set. A few trials confirmed to me that an italic Candy Script would be a bad idea. However, some of these trials showed conceptual promise of their own, so I decided to pursue them and see where they would go. Initially, it seemed a few changes to the Candy Script forms would work well at angles ranging from 18 to 24 degrees, but as the typeface evolved, I realized all the forms had to be modified considerably for a typeface of this style to work as both a digital font and a true emulation of real hand-lettering. Those were the pre-birth contractions of the idea for this font. I called it Sugar Pie because it has a sweet taste similar to Candy Script, mostly due to its round-to-sharp terminal concept. This in turn echoes the concept of the clean brush scripts found in the different film type processes of late 1960s and early 1970s.
 
While Candy Script’s main visual appeal counts on the loops, swashes, and stroke extensions working within a concept of casual form variation, Sugar Pie is artistically a straightforward packaging typeface. Its many ligatures and alternates are just as visually effective as Candy Script’s but in a subtler and less pronounced fashion. The alternates and ligatures in Sugar Pie offer many nice variations on the main character set. Use them to achieve the right degree of softness you desire for your design. Merengue Script is the second typeface designed by Panco, once again together with Ale Paul, who supervised the whole development. In this opportunity, the process of shape research and the systematization of signs led him to dive into new waters. The objective was to generate a system of signs in which the construction of such was not directly bound to traditional calligraphy, nor to texts typography. Instead, the point was to create signs inspired in “Brush pen” calligraphy but with their main features drawn or literally illustrated. The result was a font with personality, authenticity and uncommon formal aspects that make Merengue Script an interesting, highly attractive and rather unusual font. From the very beginning, the search was based on creating a font with weight and good presence in big formats, but, at the same time, efficient for brief texts of small formats. The aim was to make it usable mainly in candy, sweets and chocolate packaging. The predominance of round shapes, harmonious modulations and funny and friendly-looking visual rhythms spark a special effect in the usage of Merengue Script. Texts are enhanced with an interesting visual charm, capable of transforming a very simple text into a virtual illustration that semantically reinforces the messages in a simple way, without putting legibility at risk. With a basic set of stylistic alternatives full of frills and flounces for initials, ornamental and final letters, plus a set of disconnected signs, Merengue Script offers a wide and versatile range of options for graphic designers in the process of packaging design.

1769® Display is an elegant and modern serif typeface inspired by the history of France and more particularly the Romantic movement (1700s and 1800s). The roundness of its characters and its numerous ligatures reflect the grace, refinement and sensitivity that were omnipresent during the 18th century. Its name refers to the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte, the fascinating or revolting emperor, the emblematic figure of this period.

M Young is a humanistic script design characterised by its modern, lively and youngster-like style. M Young incorporates features of the writings of felt-tip writing pen, its entry and finial points of strokes are rounded, parallel without flare. Contrast is low and the text is visible and eye-catching. It is best suited for casual and lively text, illustrations, set upright (non-slanted), non-condensed.

Meet Byra! A new approach to a decorative typeface. This typeface has asymmetrical terminals (round), which means than has serifs, but not in every side of the letterforms. The mix between both classic and modern elements, as terminals and the inverted contrast, gives the typeface a strong personality. Superfan like to be seen in large scales, for the slight roughness to appear, but has it's moments in small scales as well. Superfan has a different upper- and lowercase set of letters, and an extra set of alternate letters to choose from if that is needed!

The cover of the 1904 sheet music from the Tibetan comic opera “The Forbidden Land” had the title hand lettered in an unusual Art Nouveau style. Mostly squared with rounded corners, many of the characters twisted, turned and extended in ways that took on the look of the Far East. This became the design model for Nouveau Moderne JNL, which is available in regular and oblique versions.

Corkboard JNL is a bold, yet fun rounded-ends typeface that was popular in the 1970s and enjoying a revival amongst students and teachers via die-cut bulletin board letters. Five variations are offered—Regular, Slanted, Shadow, Shadow Slanted and Kiddies. Corkboard Kiddies JNL has a limited character set and eccentric spacing that emulates the way a child might put letters onto a bulletin board.

The opening credits to the original (1937) version of “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March was hand lettered in an Art Deco style with rounded terminals that emulated the look of neon signage – alluding to the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood. Screen Star JNL is the digital revival of that lettering, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

ITC Bauhaus was designed by Edward Benguiat and Victor Caruso in 1975. They based it on a prototype face drawn by Herbert Bayer in 1925 while he was teaching at the Bauhaus School in Dessau, Germany. ITC Bauhaus has simple geometric shapes and monotone stroke weights. The rounded, open forms and quirky geometric gyrations of ITC Bauhaus will make contemporary graphic designs look both fun and stylish.

Searching for the Exceptional Designing Tapir was driven by the search for a display typeface which is doing something different than the rounded and bouncy fun faces – the letterforms should stand out with a slight touch of weirdness, creating attention and recognizabilty. A big character set, optimized spacing & kerning and lots of features make Tapir a good choice for professional usage between games, toys and skateboards.

A number of pieces of antique sheet music utilizing the same Roman typeface were the inspirational basis for Musical Score JNL. This antique design closely resembles pen lettering and its hand-made charm due to the rounded stroke ends and varying character widths. Informal, yet attractive - the character design evokes the feeling of the turn of the previous century and simplicity of life at that time.

Architectural yet human, as if the letter forms had been delicately carved in stone; their rounded stroke edges and corners lovingly eroded by the surf of the Baltic Sea; slightly overexposed, radiating comforting warmth, giving the impression one was looking at the characters against the setting sun. All of the letters are chunky and rounded, which is probably the reason why they are visible from afar. And I mean, really, really afar. The overall feel of the typeface is meant to be very casual and affable, so it is great for businesses that are fun, outgoing and sincere.

Ad Lib designed by Freeman Craw for the American Type Founders (ATF) in 1961. A bold Grotesque with irregular rectangular counters in round characters. This type was designed by cutting the letter images out and thus has some wood-cut character. Some lower case characters have slight inclination. Initially numerous alternative characters were provided. Unusual shapes make this typeface useful for advertising and display work.

Calps Sans is a variant of the original Calps typeface. Import to be more corporate, Calps Sans family use flat corners instead of rounded corners (Calps). “Calps Sans” is a prominent, eye-catching and unique typeface. It comes with 9 weights and Slim version in order to suit for a multifunctional usage, especially for cooperative work, such as website, magazine, editorial, publishing , as well as packaging.

Sánchez, designed by Daniel Hernández, is a serif typeface belonging to the classification slab serif, or Egyptian, that bears a strong resemblance to the iconic Rockwell, but with rounded edges— offering contrast and balance to the square structure. Sánchez & Sánchez Condensed comprises 12 variants, ranging from extra light to black, each of the same x-height. Regular and Italic variants are available for free.

Designed with a very limited over-shoot to accentuate a horizontal appearance to increase legibility in long or short headings as well as body-texts. Note with the capital O and lower o roundness has been limited along with other lowercase b, d, g, q and p. Trebla Square is very suitable for titling, display, captions, logos and supports all if not most latin languages.

Punch Tape JNL emulates the old-style pin-punched paper tapes that were used in everything from ticker tapes to moving electronic signage to early digital typesetting equipment. Pin punch characters were also used in the early days of banking as a secure way of canceling a check so that it was rendered useless if re-submitted. In this version, the "dots" are square rather than round.

A title card with cast credits for the 1935 movie “The Whole Town’s Talking” (starring Edward G. Robinson and Jean Arthur) formed the basis for People Talk JNL. The hand lettered names were done in a slightly condensed slab serif – mostly rectangular in shape with rounded corners. A few characters take on their own unique appearance. People Talk JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Bylander is a stateful serif typeface. With robust, heavy letterforms reminiscent of a foundry's hammer hitting molten metal, and an unpaired weight, Bylander's characters seem forged from the core of the Earth. Its rounded corners whisper tales of smoothened river stones, and its gentle curves combined with its industrial mass makes Bylander a paradox; both intimidating in its boldness and welcoming in its approach.

Mesclo is our personal take on the geometric typefaces genre. With mono-linear appearance, humanistic elements and subtle hints of Art Deco, Mesclo is a timeless typeface with dramatic oblique terminals and a welcoming, friendly roundness. The outstanding dynamic rhythm and legibility of the text contrasts with the inflexible geometry of the unusual complementary caps-only typefaces, specially developed to fulfil and enrich this type family.

Pochoir is a sweet stencil antiqua typeface with round and thick serifs. Once, on a university trip to Paris, Yanone saw some spray-stencil street art. This inspired him to redraw Underware’s Dolly (with permission) in a spray-stencil style, making many adjustments to weight and character shapes to bring about Pochoir. The art form of stencils have first appeared in Paris in the 1980s.

A circa-1940s textbook for the Esterbrook Drawlet Pens (similar to Speedball pens) offered numerous samples of lettering that could be obtained by following the simple directions and using the book as a guide. One example was a classic Art Deco design made with a round nib pen, and it has been redrawn digitally as Lettering Book JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

CA Mechano is quite what the name suggests – A mechanical typeface. Pretty straight forward and all-caps as long as you don’t activate the stylistic set "disorder". You will see what happens then: a lot of fun for the typographic eye. A more consumable distraction is offered by the other stylistic set. You will dis­cover peacefully rounded letters in the neighborhood of strictly mechanically constructed glyphs.

"TSUBAME" means swallow in Japanese. These fonts are based on the shape of Tsubame. The relationship between humans and swallows is as deep-rooted. Japanese swallows have adapted to nesting in and around human habitation from ancient time. So in Japan, they prohibited people from catching or killing swallows because of their beneficial role as insect eaters. Since the relationship between humans and swallows is close, this font's letter spacing is designed to be very tight.

"Culpa" is a children's themed handwritten font. This font looks cheerful and without being bound by standard rules, just like the nature of children who have not been constrained by standard rules. This font has almost the same lowercase and uppercase sizes, so it can be mixed up in words and sentences. Caravan was designed in 1938 by William Addison Dwiggins and consists of a variety of ornaments. He based the forms of the ornaments on the same lines and curves found in his font Electra. He wanted printers and designers to have the chance to combine the two fonts for a more attractive or outstanding overall picture. Caravan is particularly popular for advertisements in newspapers. Caravan can be easily mixed with other fonts designed by Dwiggins.

I had a Neneh Cherry song in my head when I made this font. In ‘Buffalo Stance’ she sings about a gigolo with his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet. I liked the sound of it, so Crocodile Feet font was born. Crocodile Feet is a children’s book font: bold and cute, with easy to read glyphs. A narrow, modern Slab Serif. JOSEFOV is directly derived from the sans serif text font ”Hedwig“. Therefore, of course, it pairs best with “Hedwig”. The basic thought was to create a font with heavy rounded serifs in the style of ”Clarendon“ but which hardly reminds one of that particular font. The form principle of rounded serifs is applied whenever possible — for example at the points where the individual strokes of the characters join one another. JOSEFOV seems very technical, very constructed (and truly is). In order to soften up the rigid impression, the serifs are applied at some points contrary to the tradition handed down, as with the upper case A C G K M V W and the lower case a b d h i j k l s t. Historically there is no example of the laterally oriented serifs of capital and small s (S) and C G. On the other hand, the double-sided serifs on the stems of b d h k l appear at the beginning of modern times in the very first serif types from five hundred years ago. The double-sided serifs of A M V W were also customary in the first decades of printing. JOSEVOV is particularly suitable for topics such as nature, folklore, culture, music, nutrition.
