A neat face with pronounced spur serifs which several foundries have already digitized. We like ours better though, because we have drawn a lowercase which was lacking in the original. Barnhart Bros. & Spindler of Chicago introduced this type in 1888.

Crestwood is an updated version of an elegant semi-formal script typeface originally released by the Ludlow Type Foundry in 1937. Crestwood is best used at larger sizes, and is wonderful for invitations and greeting cards. Character Set: Latin-1

Lakeland JNL was inspired by lettering seen on a vintage container of Yankee brand motor oil. Originally all-caps on the package, the remaining characters were developed to expand on this casual semi-script design which was popular during the 1940s.

Our notes say this was originated at the Barnhart Bros. & Spindler foundry in Chicago, and named Cable. Perhaps so, but we didn't find it in any of our BB&S catalogs. We made a few changes to improve the color.

Adhesive Letters JNL was drawn from sample letters and numbers once manufactured by the Tablet and Ticket Company of Chicago. Originally sold under the brand name of Willson's, these gummed letters were available in a number of styles and sizes.

Frisco Bay JNL is an entirely original design from Jeff Levine with strong Art Deco influences. A medium weight letter form, this design finds itself at home in any application where a touch of elegance from the past is needed.

Central Type Foundry of St. Louis issued this quirky little gem under the name of Quaint Roman around the turn of the twentieth century. This version is a little less gnarly than the original, but retains all of its eccentric charm.

Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF in 1927, Sol Hess added a lower case in 1929. Hess also drew Broadway Engraved in 1928 for Lanston Monotype. Broadway has become somewhat of a classic icon as an "Art Deco" typeface.

Balboa Plus is a condensed sans serif display family. It was originally conceived as a simple black and white typeface. But it seemed unfinished, begging for something more. I decided to try adding a couple layers of fill and detail to try and make it interesting. The result is this four-layer chromatic font family. The Primary Font is the Main Font. The other fonts ( Fill, Inline, and Gradient) only exist to support the Primary Font. The Fill font should sit behind the Primary font (there is a little color trapping going on). Vintage sheet music was initially a partial inspiration for what started out as a simple retro typeface, but the basic hand-lettered design from the Art Deco era lent itself to some further experimentation. Geometric shapes were added to the original monoline letters and numerals and the end result was a marvelous display face called Cafe Society JNL. During the 1930s, "Cafe Society" was popular slang for the financially privileged during the Great Depression who dined at fine cafes while others who were able to eat out did so at diners and cafeterias. Available along with Cafe Society JNL is the original version, Cafe Society Monoline JNL.

Replay is a pure hymn to the classic typeface Caslon originally made by William Caslon (1692–1766). The typeface that bears his name, was made between 1720 and 1726. In 1739 he founded the Caslon Foundry which later become a property of Stephenson, Blake & Co., but remained an independent foundry until 1937. The typeface have been popular ever since it was made and still stand proud as a classic text face. MRF made detailed research, including versions from Adobe and Justin Howes. The end result is leaning more towards the original. Some minor »imperfections« are also incorporated in order to make the typeface more lively and old fashioned.

Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign accented characters and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.

California Bound JNL is based on the hand lettering found on the side of the old California Zephyr passenger trains; the route now being a part of Amtrak. This somewhat unusual Art Deco design is more utilitarian than decorative, yet it still captures the "Streamline Era" perfectly.

Melusine is based on an ornate style of gothic calligraphy used primarily in decorative signs and advertising in Germany around the turn of the century. It has many of the characteristics of a true medieval gothic hand, but is a more elaborate, extreme variaton on the style.

Jacob Riley is based on antique 18th century printers’ specimens and has been hand-illustrated with calligraphy nibs dipped in walnut ink. A goodly fellow, Jacob delights in uses varied and sundry including personal correspondence, rustic decor, graphic display and even amongst the pages of children’s books.

Qualettee is a decorative sans face with a high x-height that works surprisingly well for text. The lightest weight is almost moonline but as the styles get bolder, the contrast increases, becoming very pronounced. The family has ten members: five weights with italics for each weight.
